Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
These electric fans might work for a regular 350 or maybe a v6 but not for a 383 built like this.

Yeah, that's why you won't see electric fans on big rigs.
Direct drive fans are the best for cooling fast and efficient

Yep. I just don’t trust them at all. I believe these are Ford Taurus fans? I think that was a mod from this forum way back in the day. they can’t cool this big of a radiator and engine. They were meant for v6’s

Getting a weak spark issue so changing out the cap and coil to something made in the USA instead of China (came on this motor) $50 amazon distributor and cap.....:doah:

Also, going to tackle my trans leak this morning.

Pretty certain I mashed the gasket when jacking up the trans to support pulling out the engine. I didn’t even think about it. I should have placed a ratchet strap across the front after the pan to hold it in place. Lesson learned and will try to remember for the future.

And the local auto parts store sold me the wrong transmission gasket and my heater in my shop decided to quit working. Today is off to a great start :haha:

Fixed the heater and got the correct gasket. Just waiting for the shop to warm up as it’s 20 degrees in here. :rotfl:

Seems tropical

Flooded the engine trying to figure out this spark issue. Man, and to think I’d be cruising in this by tomorrow was a thought I had two days ago.

If only It didn’t take 4 hours to remove the spark plugs.

:haha:

Well..... remember when I said watch I’ll put the motor in and the tranny would go out?

Pulled the pan to find a valve body bolt laying in the center of it......

Appears to be in fine shape, the hole was fine and it threaded in fine. I am thinking the kid drove the truck to Washington from Florida with that bad drive line and rattled the valve body loose.

Retorqued everything and put on a new gasket. Fingers crossed that it isn’t something more serious. Doesn’t appear to be so but looks can be deceiving.

Really glad I mashed the trans gasket now and had to pull that pan. That could have been a nightmare later on.

FWIW the V6 windstar fans are a common upgrade and good enough to cool a BBC.

Windstars cool my BBC fine all day, in Moab at 110 degrees, when I had fenders.

If your vehicle is getting hot sitting it is the fans, if it is getting hot while moving at 40 mph or so it is the radiator.

Before it was hot at idle and then would cool down as you drove.

At least now I can sit at idle and have it not reach above 205
