Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
Next up on the docket.

Exhaust [ ]
Wiring harness [ ]
Tires [ ]

Possibly a larger alternator to handle all the extra stuff I plan to put on. I had to take the optima battery I bought back because it burned out after only a couple uses. Would like to upgrade this battery but it still works great haha.

I want to build the wiring harness where all the auxiliary lights and CB radio are integrated into the fuse panel. Going to totally redo the entire wiring harness with a kit. Havnt decided who to go with yet. Want something that has a lot of extra slots on the fuse block.

got my Carr light bar on order along with a bunch of knock off KC lights I plan to turn into LED’s.

still undecided about tires. I want to try and get the most tire I can under the truck. Currently have 34.5” (true size) would like to get 37” or maybe 38” under the wheel wells.

There is a guy on the local markets page selling a ranger overdrive unit :eek1:

I’m going to get it if the price is right.

How much you think a used one would go for? What are they $1500-$1800 new? If he is in the 800-$1000 range I’d pick it up and still be under what a nv4500 costs and be able to split all my gears.

Don’t remember new. Last one offered to me was $1200 and I passed

Yeah, he just read the message so I’m just waiting for a text. He’s about 45 miles out from me. Wondering what he wants for it. I would rather pick that up and get a Tom woods rear drive shaft than any other mod at the moment. Very rare piece to be found used. Have to build my own trans tunnel and figure out the center console but that wouldn’t be too bad. Would totally be worth it in my eyes. I could always do it later and have it on the shelf for some rainy shop days. I might need to build a cross member though hmm. Lots to consider but this has gotten me very excited lol

I like the idea. More shift levers the better. Given the prices of the. I don't know it's cheaper than a 4500 swap though. Of course it depends where you are for the price and availability of a 4500 but I've seen them go for less than the prices thrown around for the ranger unit.

If you do get it, you have to twin stick the 205. It needs to look like the cab of a tractor with all those levers.

That ranger over drive had a ford input shaft. He said $1000 bucks. If it was a Chevy I would have bought it. @Bent77

I’m just trying to get everything tightened up on this so I can take it to the woods and know I’ll get back out. Just rolled over on my vacation so I’m itching to get out and camp. Usually go up to baker lake and camp in the summer. Hoping to around whitetrash (Memorial Day) weekend. Wish it was a little better geared and I’d drive it over the pass to Winthrop.

I’m buying a new wiring harness.

I’m trying to decide between:

Brothers Truck $799

American Autowire $899

Speedway Universal 22 circuit $189

open to other suggestions

I don’t care about having a bulkhead connector But I do care about making sure the new fuse box doesn’t interfere with the parking brake or clutch.

I am worried that the speedways signal relay will be in the way. Or that I’ll have to move it slightly to the right but then it might be in the way of the clutch pedal.

I am struggling to justify the $800+ dollar price tag on the wiring. For that amount of money I could build another guitar amp. I’m tempted to just buy the wire and build my own harness on the table.

although, I think the best way to go about it would be to buy the speedway kit and adapt it to an American autowire fuse panel or an OEM reproduction with more circuits if they are available. Hmm......

Would you mind telling why you are going with a new harness?

I am wondering what is that messed up to make you want to spend lots of time and money to replace it. I took a very good harness out of a '79 in a yard to put into my '70, then added custom things to it. But we don't have much humidity to corrode fuse terminals. And a buddy of mine had done installations of Painless harnesses and knew that they require lots of detail work and time, so I went the cheap route. (Back in '96..)

Painless or ezwiring used to be in the $300 range

mainly peace of mind. This harness is gutted, spliced into and dried out. This truck came from Florida so all the wires are stiff. I’d like to be able to add circuits without having to splice into wires. Also it would clean it up immensely.

I haven’t gotten to the exhaust shop. I ended up patching the exhaust for now.

So many things I want to do now I’m struggling to pick something and start the project.

The SM465 with 4:88 gears is pretty much undrievable except around town. At 50mph I’m at nearly 3k RPMs. I plan to put 37” tires on and see how it fairs. Possibly going to gear change to 3.73 to make it more street-able.

Definitely going to install a wiring harness upgrade at some point. Still deciding which brand to go with but I am leaning towards painless. I want to have purchased all the auxiliary pieces before I get the harness, that way I can wire it all in at the same time.

During wire harness installation I want to upgrade the dash. Complete overhaul. Dash pad, gauges, cluster, bezel. Also, new vinyl floor the last part of the interior I will do is the seats as I don’t want them to get dirty.

Hardtop. I’m pretty much sold on getting the hard topper. Wife wants me to keep the soft top because she likes it. But I want a hard topper I can beef up and throw a rack onto.

lots to do in the coming months. Slowly collecting parts.

Post #204....
Sorry couldn’t help myself :D
Glad she’s up and running around now. I hate when I have alot of things I want to do and can’t decide. I try to narrow it down to what will make it more reliable first and then cosmetic stuff second. Unless it’s free stuff. ‘Cause free!
