Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
Post #204....
Sorry couldn’t help myself :D
Glad she’s up and running around now. I hate when I have alot of things I want to do and can’t decide. I try to narrow it down to what will make it more reliable first and then cosmetic stuff second. Unless it’s free stuff. ‘Cause free!

Yeah the price of hardtoppers is funny. They can be free-$500 and all in similar shape ha

I haven’t gotten to the exhaust shop. I ended up patching the exhaust for now.

So many things I want to do now I’m struggling to pick something and start the project.

The SM465 with 4:88 gears is pretty much undrievable except around town. At 50mph I’m at nearly 3k RPMs. I plan to put 37” tires on and see how it fairs. Possibly going to gear change to 3.73 to make it more street-able.

Definitely going to install a wiring harness upgrade at some point. Still deciding which brand to go with but I am leaning towards painless. I want to have purchased all the auxiliary pieces before I get the harness, that way I can wire it all in at the same time.

During wire harness installation I want to upgrade the dash. Complete overhaul. Dash pad, gauges, cluster, bezel. Also, new vinyl floor the last part of the interior I will do is the seats as I don’t want them to get dirty.

Hardtop. I’m pretty much sold on getting the hard topper. Wife wants me to keep the soft top because she likes it. But I want a hard topper I can beef up and throw a rack onto.

lots to do in the coming months. Slowly collecting parts.
You will be happy with the 37" tires and 4.88 gears

I’m heading to this tomorrow.

Now, what wheel width and backspacing should I be shooting for?

I checked my truck and at some point someone had cut rolled and welded up the fenders for tire clearance. They did such a good job I thought it was factory this whole time.

im thinking when I buy new body bushings I’ll throw in a 1” body lift. That will give me 6.5” of lift or maybe a little more since the bushings are squatted right now and my measurement now is 5.5” from front axle to frame.

Get the tires on before you sell out on the body lift. They may clear if trimming has already been done

I’m running the 37s on mine no body lift. I’m at about 5” lift, and I think we determined the square headlight trucks have slightly larger wheel wells

Just from looking I think it’s going to be real close. I don’t plan on doing extreme wheeling though so maybe it will be fine. I definitely don’t want the wheels I currently have. They remind me of tribal tattoos.

So.... what back spacing am I looking for to keep the wheels inside the fenders? 4.5? 5.5?
