Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
Guy down the road has a set of pro comps with 4.5 backspacing -15mm offset . Just need to know if these will work.

So.... what back spacing am I looking for to keep the wheels inside the fenders? 4.5? 5.5?
Mine are 4.5" but aren't inside the fenders. But I don't think that they hang out too far.
I did the original trimming to clear the old wheels and tires which stuck out more. But I use most of the clearance still.

Also, mine is 12.5" from the top of the axle tube on the D60 to the bottom of the factory bump stop bracket on the frame. I have a 1" body lift separating the '79 frame from the '90 body. And 57.75" to the bottom of the driver side door handle. (Chrome rib) just to give you an idea how tall mine is.

These are 4.5” backspacing 17x9.5
40x13.50 tire. They stick out a bit.

I’d be worried about deeper than 4.5” on the back space. Starts allowing the tire to make sweet love to things it shouldn’t when you turn the wheel

I think 5.5" would be too much.
I am trying to see if I can make a 5" fit if not I know the 4.5" fits fine and doesn't stick out like the 3.5"

Yeah, I’m picking up some pro comp steelies tomorrow 4.5 backspacing and -15mm offset. Hope they mount up good.

mine reads 13.5” from top of axle to bottom of frame directly above axle. Hopefully it’s enough. If not we’re going higher :woot:

Definitely drives way better with the 37’s wow the difference is pretty incredible actually.

Each shift basically doubled in pull. Didn’t get a chance to get up to highway speeds but I will tomorrow. In fact it’s going to be a hard day getting through work thinking about it.

Now that you have it, can you check if the wheel was 5" if it would clear the steering arm, tie rod etc...

The ones you put on, how much clearance is there between the wheels and the steering components?
Quite a bit. They actually stick out of the fenders more than the last set by quite a bit. Doesn’t look like they’ll even get close to the tie rods.
