Project Snow Bear K20!

This should be called the ADD build. You are all over the map here. Going non-gm axles, then find the deal of the year on CUCV axles, then back to ford axles within 5 posts. Then 4bt vs 5.3? I'm not sure what you do for coffee but I suggest a switch to decaf!

I'm not knocking you, just enjoying watching somebody go nuts on a truck flying by the seat of your pants.

I lived outside of great falls for a couple years and worked in white sulphur springs for a little while.we used to go skiing at showdown and traveled through that stretch of road quite often. Spent a lot of time at the brewery in Belt. Lol

I was actually thinking of renaming it the bastard...LOL. I never really wanted to do the 5.3L, I was sort of talked into it. Then the two diesels fell into my lap. The axle deal has been a few days in the thinking. I was looking for a 60, started exploring alternatives and like the idea of the super 60 on coil overs. Just sounds like fun to me. I'll keep the 60/14 bolt for another project. They ain't going anywhere, but yeah I can be a little all over the place until I get things set in stone. Now I gotta sell a LS motor and some parts I bought for it, a lift kit, some axles and start getting this bitch rocking! There's a few here that know me locally, I don't really screw around. I like to get things done and go have some fun with the truck. Everybody puts a 60 in the front and a LS under the hood. I like being different...sometimes

It's all good. Just saw the progression in a few posts and thought the same thing, "this guy don't screw around!" Keep on doing what you are doing!

I've seen the 6 cyl Isuzu in square body Chevys before. You are right about the Cummins. My Ford with a '90 12 valve, I don't like to take it above 2100 during normal driving and it has 3000 rpm gov springs in it. I checked it this morning and in 4th gear(ZF5 with Gear Vendor) with 4.10 gears and 35s I was running like 2000 rpm at I think 55ish mph. The 5 speed with the Gear Vendor is nice cuz I can drop another 500 rpm when I shift from 5th to 5th over so on the highway at 65 I'm only running like 1800 rpm I think.
I bet if you wait a day or two a five speed will drop into your lap with your current luck at finding parts.

That is the one thing I am scared of with the little 4 cylinder. In my mind I see the LS engine being a better choice for this scenario. RPM's are no issue at all with it and I do know that. It would be a struggle with the diesel. Especially in the hills here in Montana. Maybe the LS just makes more sense. I can always sell the 4cyl diesel and fund something else.

Sounds like a good plan for what you are planning to do. I would love to put a 4 cyl diesel in place my 6.2 in my K5 but it is used for slow speed off road stuff mostly and it has an OD auto in it.

Ok let's turn the topic towards coil over geometry and travel lengths. I am thinking the 14" travel fox or King coil overs are what I will be going with. I'll contact the company with weights at the corners and some input on what I expect from them. I am not looking to build a rock crawler, just a capable do-all type truck that will crawl on occasion. On road characteristics are more important that extreme wheel travel or anything like that. Ruff stuff has all of the brackets, including the lower coil over mounts for the super 60 axle. I will be looking at the ORD cross over shock hoops for the uppers. I would love some input and I need to find a geometry calculator

One concern I have is that I don't want to loose my inner fender wells for the shock hoops. I understand I will most likely need to do some trimming on them to make this work out and I DO love the crossover piece that ORD sells with their hoop kit. I just want to get it in there without losing the only protection my engine bay has from snow and slush.

When you get a chance to measure it, do. Then you will get to see where the front diff will end up. It is not an issue of getting the parts to attach to the diff, or the frame. The issue may be that the diff is to close to the frame. Thus limiting up travel, steering options etc.

A issue that I have / had with my HP60 in my burb is the diff hitting the oil filter. To much up travel, to short bump stops, ie none at the time, to long of a oil filter. My 60 is out of a 79 F350 it bolted in. The mods were very few.

So it looks like I will be getting the rear axle from the f-350 with the full spring packs and frame brackets. Fortunately it was already pulled and that is just what they did. That makes me want to just relocate the perches on the axle and use the whole assembly. It will certainly be good for about 4-5" of lift on my truck and would give me a solid base for towing and general use. Mind you, I haven't measured anything on it yet and it may be WAAAAAY too long or something ridiculous but it's worth a shot.

A quick check and it seems the super duty rear springs are 58" long and 3" wide. Totally doable, just don't know if the brackets will work.

I think so too. I'll have them home shortly and I can hold one up and measure it but I think it will work. It would be nice to have that one ton spring pack back there for towing.
