All right... just picked up the opposite caliper...the word must be out, the prices have been steadily climbing...
Nice! I’m glad I got my calipers last year then because I think I only paid around $90/pair from a low mileage wrecked H3. Were you still planning on trying to figure out how to make them work with the 8 lug axle?
I just picked up a spare front axle so I can take my time freshening it up and doing this brake upgrade. Figure it’d be a lot easier to do with this axle by itself on some stands in my garage than working on the axle that’s already sitting under my K5.
In case anyone is interested, I found another option for the rear brakes as well. You can use the rear disc setup from a NBS truck (like the rear axle Cyclic used) and bolt it up to a 14 bolt semi-floater with either a spacer for the brake flange or just welding on a new brake flange a little further out (since the drum brake setup sits further in on the axle tube). Apparently those axles share the same mounting flanges and everything will swap right over once you get the brake flange in the right position. If your truck isn’t lifted and has stockish HP this might not be worth it but I’m doing an LS swap soon and plan on eventually running 35’s so I wanted to use something a little stronger than a 10 bolt. Here’s a good thread on the swap with several links to other swaps in case anyone is interested: http://www.performancetrucks.net/fo.../official-14-bolt-9-5-sf-truck-thread-467473/
No, I'm sticking with the 6 lugs. This is a proven set up (thanks cyclic) now and I'm not messing with it. I also have a spare axle, I'm doing the swap on it along with a gear change, so it'll be ready when I swap in. Heck, I may even hold out for a crossover setup at the same time.
Out back, I'm hunting for a 9.5" 14bsf new style axle. I have a 9.5 in my '90 2500 and am more than confident it will be fine with what my plans are for my rig.
NNBS trucks only had the disk brake 6 lug 14bsf in 6.2L trucks including Denalis and Escalades. Though all the SUVs use a 5 link rear suspension and truck use leafs. Although I suppose that doesn't really matter because you'll be cutting and welding on new perches anyway. When I was researching the 14bsf in the NBS trucks I could only find them in the 1500HD and 2500LD trucks and they were all 8 lugs. The Silverado SS and Vortec Max trucks had a 6 lug version but they had drums not discs. The only newer ones that had 6 lugs with discs (that I could find anyways) were from the Express 2500's with the lighter 7300# GVWR but I could never confirm what their width was. Some sites said they were the same 67-68" WMS as the truck axles and other places said they were in the 70-72" range but I could never find one in person to confirm which was correct. I wound up finding a 6 lug 14bsf from a '92 OBS 4x4 with matching 3.73's pretty cheap on CL so I snatched it up. I already have the rear disc brake setup from my LS donor Yukon so I stopped researching other options as soon as I found that axle on CL.
Edit: Just went to car-part.com to check what the NNBS 1500's came with and sure enough the 6 lug 14bsf was an option but holy crap the yards are wanting $1000-1800 for those puppies. Makes me feel way better about my donor brakes and CL axle lol.
