Quadrasteer 8.1L Suburban tow rig

2003 Suburban 2500 Quadrasteer camper towing 8.1L 6.0L swap 4L80-E
The new dipstick tube mounts to a hole in the head and eliminates the bracket that used to go there and hold the temp sensor connector. The old one mounted to one of the exhaust studs. The dipstick stick-out measures 1/8" longer, but it's hard to be exact when the old one is broken. We'll call it close enough.

The CPS was the older style. I didn't realize the connector rotated 90 degrees, but it should be even better, if anything.

Rockauto for the dipstick tube? I need one for my 5.3.

Yes, the smallblock version is cheap and plentiful.

Well look at this.

I figured if I was looking at Keen-serts there was no harm in drilling more, as long as it's straight. Ended up grabbing one more with an extractor after wiping out the outermost thread. The other 2 remaining I drilled to 1/4" then slowly worked the tap down. Still debating doing Keen-serts on those two, but I can torque the bolts as tight as I want.

"SuperMatic" is their own brand name. It is not a GM transmission, but a modified transmission, as I proposed in my last post. The torque rating is from them and therefore can't be compared directly to GM torque ratings.

That number is above an Allison 1000/2000, so take it for what you will. Plus, I hesitate with pros who omit punctuation and publish "forword" and "billit".

That's a pet peeve of mine.
It's one thing when someone here posts and has a typo or doesn't know English perfectly, but on a website or a billboard it's inexcusable

The whole engine was crusty. Accessories on the front locked up. I took everything off and gave it needle scale, wire wheel, clean, prime, paint. A lot of these parts are hard to find.

Today I hauled home a 2003 Sub radiator, shroud, intake tube and frame mount brackets. I've read that there's a plastic spacer underneath small block radiators that you just remove and then the big block rad drops in. Looks like the extra 4" of width all goes to the driver's side, as there is an unused hole over there 4" over and the shroud is offset a little. Small core 17.5x34×1". Large core 19.5x38x1 3/8".

It also came with the hard to find triple lower rad hose.

So everything still factory.

(Rad on the left is a spare, as the one in the truck weeps from the DS tank enough I smell coolant sometimes. Guess I'm skipping that job.)

It's just about ready to drop on. I'm currently held up by Amazon covid shipping delays on a few parts. EBay seems to be delivering on time, though.:waytogo:

Anybody know about torque converters?Seems there are different listings for 6.0 and 8.1, but some say there is only one stock converter for 4L80-E in this era. The '80 converter is WAY looser than the '60 converter, to the point my wife doesn't like precision work in the 6.0/4L80 rig.

Got the frame brackets clear.

These are like $90/side, so I was glad to score a good used pair - there were just some broken bolts in one side.

Maybe next weekend? Depends on work, but I'm glad to have work!

Planning to use the existing ECM and harness, which are known good and working with all the other electronics in the vehicle, by reworking crank and cam sensor wiring as needed. The donor harness is not as nice.

Plan to leave the ECM mostly the same, but change shift tables, injector characteristics and VE to stock 8.1L values. I'll be using the same MAF and MAP sensors after all and everything else already gets along with each other.

Since my barns are already full, I will park the rig sideways in the garage. It's Q-steer, after all...

Luke get in touch w @gregducato about convertors.
