Question about making my 86k5 look like a cucv*show me your rattlecan camo*!!

Here is how I did it, the truck was blue when I bought it.
  • Light sanding of the whole truck.
  • Cleaned the whole truck to get all the dust off.
  • Then the whole truck got a coat of flat black rustoleum, primer on all the chrome parts, then the black.
I was going to leave it at that, but my neighbor brought over a case of beer.
  • We grabbed my Daughters sidewalk chalk and drew the pattern shown above on the truck.
  • Paint by numbers.
Done.:D

Did you have to mask each section as you went? I would think that there would be a lot of overspray just spraying each section.

I removed the taillights, turn signals and headlights.

The only other overspray got on the window glass, and I used a razor blade to remove it. I did not care about the gaskets and such.

I suppose you could tape it all up, but I didn't want to....plus you have to remember the "Beer" factor I mentioned above.:haha:

Lol, no I meant like to keep the green from getting on the brown and what not.

Oh.....Nope. I just sprayed it where I wanted it to go.
There is a little overspray but not much at all. You can see it here.

Well here's mine with the OD green paint and blue interior. It sucks IMO i'm gonna throw in some realtree seat covers or something

and if you want a cutom paint job you could always throw some brown on it ;) :haha:

nice mud dude.

Readymix: How did you paint it with the chalk on the truck? I was thinking of doing the same thing but i was worried about painting over the chalk. Just dosnt seem good. Did you just pant over it? should i not worry about it?

How much did you sand and with what? How rough should it be?

Anyone think when i do it i should leave the k5 blazer emblem or no? Thats the only trim i really like.

Anddd wheres a good place to get cucv bumpers with the grill guard thats not local, looking to ship, and ill be willing to pay. no one makes copies or oem parts for cucvs do they?

Barney: how much and what size?

I just painted over the chalk, but the outline was done lightly.
I don't remember what grit sandpaper I used. Maybe around 220 or so.

Damn, i need new pictures.

krylon rattlecan. painters striping tape for outline and a butload of masking tape. Some parts I cheated and used a little black tape which leaves a residue if you don't "kill" the tape first. Looking back, I think I'd rather have flat blacked the whole thing.

that looks pretty sick. keep the advice and pics coming!

Thanks evryone for the pics and advice thus far.

How is the paint holding up?

I'd like to see a truck done in the old Vietnam tiger stripe camo pattern, I've searched for some pics but no luck.

looking at pics of cucv's online it looks like you could do it yourself, seems like the cucv bumpers have mostly cosmetic differences, though i may be wrong. and anyone know what the little light lookin things are in the corners of the bumpers?

yeah i guess but i need those towpoints and im not sure where they mount or how. Id feel better grabin a whole pair of bumpers with the tow points ready to bolt on. I figure ill grab those, the wheels to paint and then paint it.

Something tells me im gonna be looking for a long while for complete cucv bumpers with the grill guard. I guess govliquidation dosnt just sell parts off cucvs right? Id pay some money just to take the bumpers. Or if someone does oem parts for the cucvs id do it.

Found one. It's pretty cool but I'd like to have the original patten, probably to hard to duplicate. Looks like a tremendous amount of painstaking taping.

The things in the corner of the CUCV bumpers are blackout lights.

BTW, a CUCV bumper is not any stronger than a stock one -- it just has extra holes in it for the lights and shackles. With a sawzall, you can put holes for the shackle tubes into your existing bumper and call it good. The brushguards aren't bad, but you could also get an aftermarket one of those.

Searching for "rattle can camo" will find you a metric buttload of posts, including my three trucks:
