rcfatcats 78k5- Boostedk5 2.0

Sam, the front wheel drive run was definitely one of the better ones of the day... I think if you had it in 4wd you would have done real well. Hope to see you at the end of the month!!!!

finally going wheeling again!and exhaustis finished!

so i got a few big items finished over the past few weeks. first up was the antiwrap bar.
the cross-member i built

Shackle mount

axle end

full antiwrap bar

beginning of my exhaust system that i had to redo because of the antiwrap bar

had do build a few custom pieces

parts going in

had to build this piece to run over the antiwrap bar and sneak above the diff

layed out after final welding

ill have a few pics of where the exhaust exits later tonight

next up was reskinning the quarter panels

working on sending one of my parts blazers to the scrap yard so i figured i would use the quarter skins that where in decent shape. so i stripped the completely ruined quarter panel skins off of my blazer

while i had the rear torn down i went ahead and replaced the factory tailpan with something a bit more sturdy.

using a piece of 4x2 3/16th wall box tubing

clearing the rust

new quarters hung

tailgate in place

then it was to the rti ramp to test the anti wrap bar

then as usual it was off to rausch for some wheeling

wheeling pics from rausch

Some pics of some wheeling at rausch this past weekend.

and my favorite pic

so to make up for all the poser shots (i was the only one really taking pics:dunno:)
check out this video of me finishing a trail known as affliction.
truck got a little tipsy. ill embed the video as soon as youtube allows.

new goals with a revamp.

so from the looks of things it is going to be a rough winter for me. My job is Slow (im a flat rate tech :() which makes money income tight so i decided to try and set myself a reasonable set of goals for the K5 this winter.
1. Rebuild front Diff
The front pinion bearing developed some play over this last trip so i think its time for some new front bearings.
2. diag a few "quircks" with the new to me TBI
i did notice a slight surge when at constant throttle with the tbi. hoping to find the cause
3. new front shackles and Fush kit.
yep bushings are shot and shackles arn't exactly straight anymore :dunno:
4. go over whatever else i know i have had past problems with in hopes to make it a more reliable rig come spring time.
5 Cage time!
this one is really depending on when work picks back up. first i need to purchase a tubing bender. been looking at the jd2 for a while but have also seen some others that are decently priced. suggestions would be great guys! what works? holds up? and is somewhat simple to use. doesnt have to be hydraulic. i have shop space and wouldnt mind using a ratchet setup like the jd2.
then it will be time to purchase some DOM and go to town.
if anyone is familiar with a good DOM supplier in the new jersey area please let me know as i would rather pick up in person that pay the immense fee to have something shipped.

i also hope to start taking more pics and being a little more descriptive in my build thread. i have a tendency to leave things out:whistle:.

therefore my first actual step is the clean the garage and put in a wood stove i picked up locally. finally will have heat!!!:woot:then it will be a mild tear down on the blazer!

I run a pro tools 105 Hd.. I liked a couple things better about it than the JD.. but I hear good things about that as well... I actually recommend a manual version for the first couple jobs to get a feel for it....

joysey? pfffft, no brainer.. call marmon keystone.. they deliver all thru this state at basically no charge.. it's where I get all my tube... they are kinda used to dealing with biz's, but they will set up an account and take credit cards.. they are usually pretty damn prompt with shipping, but it also depends on when they are going to be in your area... not sure how they feel about delivering to residences, as I have my stuff sent to my marina...

I just got a smoking deal on sticks of 2" and 1.5".. but their 1.75 was actually a bit pricey.. depends on what batches they have at the moment..

anyway, here.. https://www.marmonkeystone.com/ecomm/servlet/LocationServlet?mode=displayone&id=75

I have the JD model 32 and have no complaints, I looked at it and the pro tools and at the time the price was very similar. ..I agree that going manual in the beginning is a good idea. ..gotta take your licks pulling that damn handle :D. Plus there are relatively cheap hydro kits for later on (swag offroad) , I'll tell you how they work soon.

I have the hd105 and have no complaints. Cranked many of tubes though it. Don't pay for the degree ring it's pretty much useless.

thanks for the feed back guys! ill be doing some research on both as i get closer to purchase. my next question is this. what would you guys recommend for tubing diameter and wall thickness to build a cage out of? i see alot of guys are using 1.75 .120 wall. i know it technically depends on the weight of the rig but i really have no idea where mine stands weight wise at this point. :dunno:

Sam if I had to guess I would think your truck is most likely somewhere around 5500 give or take....mine is just a touch over 6k and consider its a big block and on bigger tires I definitely dont think yours is heavier.
That being said I feel 1.75" .120 wall DOM would be sufficient for a cage, with proper design 1.5" could be up to the task but I also think 1.5 "looks" too small on a fullsize. Thicker wall or larger diameter could be used but at an increased cost and weight, 1.75 seems to be the "standard" on alot of fullsizes and as long as you've good good weld joints, attachment points, and a good design (lots of triangles :D) you will be fine.
I know my bed has taken a beating, an aside from a lack of paint on the tubes thats the only "damage" the 1.75 .120 DOM has to show from multiple impacts.

Try to avoid dead nodes. HREW will save your life once, DOM will save your life multiple times. That being said, I built mine out of HREW 1.75 .120 . MI doesn't have big rocks like you guys have out there. Spend the extra coin and get the DOM.

down to work.

first off thanks to everyone who voted for me for GM of the month!!!:thumb:

so in other news i havent touched the k5 yet. been busy working but a few things are on the way which will allow me to get my butt in gear.

first up was heat for the garage. picked up a wood stove for cheap and installed with thehelp of dad.

nice to finally have heat in the garage without firing up the space heater and not being able to hear yourself think.
got a chop saw for Christmas. now ill be able to cut tube without using a handheld grinder:woot:

amazon had some deals going so i picked up a cree 50" led lightbar for cheap. interested to see how it works. constructed pretty solid but im going to reseal the lense just to be safe. heard alot of things about the cheaper light bars leaking.

and then finally after working some 60 hour weeks i saved enough to order up one of these guys.

along with a 1.75" 180 degree die. both should be here in about a week. i just have to work on finding a good Dom supplier. i tried giving the place ryoken suggested a shout but they wont deliver residential so i will have to see what else is around. soon as that happens it will be cage time!! stay tuned!:woot::woot:

can't get it shipped to work?
doesnt look like it. when i gave the location they said they couldnt deliver.:dunno: o well im working on something through a local race and fab shop to see what he can get for pricing. should find out by the weekend hopefully.
