I'm trying to figure out where to put shocks in the rear of my Blazer. The stock hole in the frame is boogered up (but not cracking) so I need an alternative. I considered inboarding them but that will force some exhaust rerouting. Any issues with going from the frame directly above the axle ( maybe a Ford shock bracket cut down and bolted flush to the frame? ) then down to the axle outboard of the springs? It seems like this would work alright and since it will put the shock at an angle it may help control body sway while driving.

CK5 thoughts?

I've seen worse but the hole is wallered(?) out pretty good.

I just don’t trust my welding skills for important stuff.

Also, it’s in a recessed curve so wouldn’t that be tough to plate?

I have mine outboard of the springs. Seems to work fine. I got my inspiration from a burb I saw at ORD's place. I cheated and made a bracket that bolted to the bottom of the bed. However it did hold up for 7 years until I made the new bed. The one I saw at ORD had a crossmember that was made with round tube that fit between the frame and the body.

Here's the ORD setup.

Here's how I had mine done.

@mrk5 I really like those tan brackets. :pimp: That's good info about putting the upper mounts on the body, I saw some pics of an FJ40 recently done like that and I wondered how it would hold up. Probably ok on a truck bed because it's mounted solid, Blazer body movement would worry me though.

All you guys need to do is get those leaf springs out of the way...

Leaf springs are where it's at, all the cool kids are switching to them. :thumb:

That is true. I think you could also look for some other type of shock tower mount to use. What was it everyone used to use? Super Duty shock towers?

I wish ord made these

I was thinking about the stamped Ford towers that were popular for use on the front for a while. I was thinking of cutting it short enough to bolt to the frame under the body then running a shock down close to the outboard end of the axle tube.

With your outboarded shocks, did your tires ever rub them? I have rub marks on the vertical wall of the wheel well so I worry about rubbage. I did just switch to shorter tires so that may not be a problem anymore.

I wish ord made these

Preach!

Shorter tires will help. Did you use the spacers? The only way to know what will clear is to cycle the suspension to its limits. Not just one side up, but the other side at full droop.

@ktmoutfront no spacers, I didn’t like the width. I need to start looking for somewhere to flex it and measure just not sure where.
