Restoration on 89

looks good.... i'm guessing they dont specify alot, because they dont wanna admit any lesser quality in the china parts...

is that Fusor your using?

How's the front floor board?

Front floor boards are spotless. Whew! After seeing the back I waited to post back on your question until the rest of the carpet was pulled.

The front carpet was soaked with antifreeze so I ordered a new heater core from LMC. Aftet thats installed I will prep the entire floor for Dynamat application. I will post pictures after the prep work, then before and after the Dynamat application.

Dynamat Prep

Here are some pictures of the finished floor panel repairs. Now we are to the point where my thread was intended...dynamat and carpet. :thumb:

The front floor pans were very clean!! I was surpised as the gods of Detroit must have been on my side after the rear floor nightmare.

It was finally time to empty those Chip Foose adorned boxes that had been taking up space in my garage for the past few months. It was a kick in the balls looking at his smiling face every morning with no Blazer to empty the contents into. Better days now though.

Dynamat Application

I had mentally prepared myself for the pain of dynamat application after reading all the reviews. Some reviews said they put it on quickly but it didn't work very well and others said it was a great product but it took 10 hours to apply and they couldnt move their fingers for a week afterward.

I went into this project with pretty simple tools. I used a utility knife, scissors, a carpet roller, and a heat gun. The whole project took me 8 hours...straight.

I ordered 3 bulk packs and figured I would have enough left over to do the doors, roof, and maybe even the dash. I struggled for a bit as how far to go up on the rear walls. I decided to go up to the wall supports and call it good. I still have 4 pieces left after the work shown in the pictures below.

My fingers hurt but I think the heat gun makes all the difference as the instructions call for a blow dryer. God help anyone that does a project like this in the winter. :haha:

Wow that loks good! That is one thing I should have done to mine. I just used the thick padding with the silver backing (2 layers in the back).

Carpet Install

I ordered the carpet kit from LMC. I also ordered the heat shield and sound deadener kits. I figured out that you do not need the sound deadener kit if you already did the dynamat. It's nice now I can send that back and put the difference towards a new headliner.

I must say the carpet was good quality and fit very well. I also ordered some new sill plates and I thought those were good quality too eventhough the new sill plate holes didnt match up with the old ones. Small irritation in the context of this interior restore I suppose.

I got the rear sill plate from Classic Parts. (Thank you Teck!) I still can't figure out why the other catalogs dont have this part. You would think any place that sells the door sill plates would have the rear too but with LMC that is not the case.

Overall I like the look of the new carpet. It is pretty much spot on as far as the color. I also took apart the seats and repainted the metal parts where they bolt into the floor. It looks good and didn't take much effort.

I am painting the receiver hitch still tonight. After that I am going to get the bumper and reciver hitch put back on and this job should be done.

Next I am going to dynamat the doors and put the new carpet inserts on the lower half.

Thanks, looks good. Save the vent pieces out of your door carpet, the new ones I got had cheap looking vents in them that did not match. So I took the old ones out cut the holes out to fit them in the new carpet panels.

Lookin good! Nice to see some clean resto work instead of the usual strip it, cut it, bend it, break it... although I enjoy that kind of work too.:D

Thanks for the compliment. I admire people that have the vision and know how to make a custom built rig. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people so I am just trying to put it back to as close to factory as possible.

ooooooooooh new carpet, that looks sooooo neeeeeewwww!!!

im jealous! i will be doing the same thing in my pickup. good tip with the heat gun, thanks!

so have you driven it yet? how much quieter is it with all that dynamat?

Not yet. :frown1: We are putting the tailgate back on today after being painted yesterday.

I am thinkinking about using memory foam under the carpet in the rear. I am in the mattress business and have access to high grade foams and fiber padding pieces for free. I would think that having a 1/2" sheet of memory foam under the carpet will make it much more comfortable if you have to sleep in the back. The dynamat should keep the foam cool enough respond properly.

Has anyone else experimented with foams under the rear carpet rather than or in addition to fiber pads? How thick can you layer materials under the carpet up to the back seat?

No, but I did put two layers of padding under mine because one just didn't seem that soft.

That is some real nice work there. I would like to find something to put under the carpet as well so when I do sleep in the rig I don't feel the humps in the floor. Let me know if you do use the memory foam and how it works out. I just picked up a new to me carpet set for my rig and will be installing it this weekend hopefully.

I can tell you that 2 layers of padding is way better/ softer then 1.

You cann't see the ribs with 2 layers, you could with 1.
