Learned something new this weekend.

Drove the truck to a car show and to a friends house. Smells rich when idling. Boggs when the throttle is hammered. Throttle response is OK just normal driving.

I am assuming it is running rich all of the time. Was going to start leaning it out a little.

Put an AFR gauge in the driver side exhaust. It was an eye opener. I have never had an AFR gauge on a carbureted engine.

12.0-12.2 at idle after warm up. 13.2-13.8 under normal driving load. pegs the gauge at 38 when the throttle is hammered, and stays there until I back off. Now I know a part of why it is so gutless. It is obviously pumping air, with not nearly enough fuel going in.

The take away is, I need to lean it out at idle and figure out why so lean at WOT. I will work one step at a time.
 
I have always wanted to put a AFR gauge on a carb for that reason. I dialed in my quadrajet back in the day by reading the plugs and playing with timing. It was a lot of fun.
 
Keep in mind that when it's rich enough to misfire, the unburned oxygen makes the sensor read lean. Readings outside of maybe 11-18 should not be taken literally.
 
Have you hooked a vac gauge to it yet? Curious, I'm sure you know more about the topic then I do...
 
So does it have big ole pegs for secondary rods?

Probably not, but some smaller ones are easy to swap in and try.

No misfires or backfires. So I was going to go by experience. That would have been a fail.
