Richard's Funky Fire Truck

3:08s 33s with the th400 were ok. Once I went to the sm465 it wasn't as pleasant.

I think massboy has a good setup with 3:08s, 32s?, and a 700r4.

Wait...things got worse when you switched to solid gearing (vs. running a loose torque converter)? That surprises me. Switching to the SM465 should have lowered engine speed. I would have thought that would increase happiness. :dunno:

I think you're right about Massboy's setup. I have put 31" tires on my K10 (3.08/700R4) for testing purposes. If my shift points were adjusted a little bit I think it would work pretty well. As long as you aren't in a hurry (otherwise you'd never hit 4th gear).

Engine speed wasn't worse, but drive ability is. I just enjoy the standard. I have no regrets about my swap, but the new truck reminded me how well the th400 works with the 6.2.

I couldn't do all that work to stay auto, but thanks.

Don't you have to get driveshafts shortened and lengthened?

Not to go from a TH400/NP208(NP241) to a TH700R4/NP208(NP241). They are close enough in length that the slip yokes will make up the difference.

Do you know if the linkage and cooler lines line up? Is it just a tranny swap is my real question.

I don't even know what that is. My th400 works. I really should just leave well enough alone.

A TH700R4 has a TV (Throttle Valve) cable that goes from the tranny to the throttle linkage. It tells the transmission where the throttle is at. Kind of like a mechanical TPS. Controls shifts timing and firmness and line pressure (along with the governor, etc).

Also for a TH400 to TH700R4 swap, the input on the transfer case needs to be changed. 32 spline to 27 spline and the adaptor too.

I'll just wait and go 3500 when the th400 goes out.

With chevy blazer temporarily out of action I can't take this apart.
