Richard's Funky Fire Truck

I just wanted to post a poser picture.

I've been driving it every day since the dune party. I really missed a stick driving though the notch today (Pinkham Notch at Mount Washington fyi). As much as I'd like the shift points of the 3500 I think staying with mechanical linkage is more my style. I really like chevy305s setup. I'm still getting ahead of myself here.

Nice shot!

I've also been driving my square-body this week. And I'm also missing the stick.

You sticking with the 465 then?

Chevy305 has an nv4500 with an advance adapters bell housing to keep stock linkage if I recall correctly.

Short throw 4500 with mechanical linkage FTW!

But seriously the same guy who makes the 4500 short throw shifter also makes one for the 3500. :deal:

It's just the 3500 linkage that has me puzzled at this point. As far as I can tell there is no way around hydraulic.

What do you prefer about the mechanical linkage?

Martin

It works and I can fix it myself on the side of the road.

I had an 89 step side with the odd 5 speed of the time. It continuously had hydraulic issues. It was a nightmare. The replacement slave was plastic and had a bleeder screw that went into the plastic and it always leaked. It left a real bad taste in my mouth for hydraulic setups.

My 84 Camaro is hydraulic and I've never touched it and it's always been fine.

What bell housing are you using? That looks like a normal 465 bell housing (non-AA).
It is an Advance Adapters bell housing. However I have heard that you can use the SM465 bell if you drill and tap 2 mounting holes in it

I guess I have lost my hydraulic clutch once. Once.

I have had troubles with mechanical clutches on multiple occasions, and have been around others.

Ok. I was thinking the AA housing looked different. I have a hydraulic 465 bell that I'm planning to attach to my NV4500. Unless I decide to go with a 3500 instead. I'm still flipping coins on that one. Sounds like there are way more pros and cons than I realized. :doah:

Also, I know how to make the nv4500 work. I don't know how to make the internal slave 3500 work. I'd rather build what I know on this truck. The limited reading I have done on the 3500 makes the 4500 seem like the easier swap.

That's what I'm finding. I may stick with my 4500 yet... :dunno:

I've been happy with the 4500 gear splits where I live, but I keep hearing that the wide split is no fun for road trips through the Rockies (which is one of my intended purposes). I wish I had the opportunity to try them side-by-side through a couple of mountain passes.

You already have the 4500? Just put it in.

That was the plan until this last trip through the Rockies with the 465 in the DP burb. 200 miles of jumping from 2nd gear to 3rd and back again got old. Really fast. He really needed a 2.5 gear and a 3.5 gear.

My understanding is that the 4500 has similar splits.

Are you referencing the gears as L 1 2 3?

The Rockies are easy compared to Pennsylvania. Those western highways are cut smooth.

That said, I never got out of 2nd going uphill out there. Sometimes I was even in low on back country roads and trails where I should have been able to go 30 mph. Some of that is because my 6.2 has so much torque that I was afraid to open her up.

All that said, if I had a 4500 in my garage there is a good chance my truck would be in pieces.
