RJFguitar's resto-mod - went offroad

I haven't done much to the K5 in the last year or so, except DRIVING it.:thumb:

I was getting completely SICK of the boggers though. Fuel mileage was horrible, and they are so rough my visors would vibrate down slowly, but annoyingly.:haha:

The time had come, and the right deal popped up. Grabbed a set of 36x14.50 Trxus radial swampers mounted on a set of Weld Mountain Crushers in 16x10. The tires are like brand new with nearly zero wear.

The seller and I agreed on $1400, but when he showed up and I pointed out that the rims were 10's, and not 12's like he had thought, I was pretty bummed as I thought 12's would have been perfect, I offered $1000 even and he went for it.

They don't look nearly as aggressive as the 14's and boggers, but I love the smooth ride, no wheel pull, and how quiet they are. Not to mention fuel mileage went WAY up.

They look good on there, ya the boggers look bad a** , but unless you are "using" them they are a waste. I have thought about the STS's for my cummins K5 , since it is not going to really be wheeled, I may think a little harder about them now :D
 
Those look real good on there. Humm might need to look in to some of those cause i need some new tires after I get mine running. Baja look good but are over 20yrs old.

I wouldn't put 5 miles on them. Casings that are 20 years old..... a gator off one of those could really do some more customizing to your fenders that you might not want done.:doah:
 
Not plaining on running them much at all.

Just don't know what to put on the 16.5 x 14" wide weld wheels.

That is a problem. You could go with the 35x16 boggers. They are actually fairly quiet and smooth when they are new. It's not until you get a couple thousand miles on them that they start to cup, howl, and vibrate. BUT, fuel mileage and wheel pull will still be an issue. I actually considered just buying a new set of boggers, knowing that at 1000 miles a year, I could get a number of years out of them before they get crappy like mine. But, when this deal came along, I bit on that instead obviously...

If you are like me and try and drive the K5 almost every weekend, pending good weather, then a different set of wheels are probably in your near future.
 
You will really love those Trxus tires. A friend of mine has them too, balanced with Equal. They are a couple years old now with a good amount of miles. Took a trip down to Mexico and it was smooth and quiet. I think they are 38 or 39", but they don't act like it.
 
Well, I think the 406 just blew up. Had it floor boarded in 2nd at about 4,000rpm and it all of a sudden started to stutter and lose rpm and power. Now it doesn't want to crank over very fast and struggles to light off. As I got it to restart I noticed it has no oil pressure. I suspect a main bearing.:doah:
 
So, whats it going to be?
Not sure. The 406 blew up literally 3 hours ago. After some thought, a 6.0 does sound interesting, as I would love to have EFI this time around. But, I see it being tuff to buy a complete 6.0, computer, pedal, who know's what else, for less than a good 'ol gen 1 Crate motor that comes with a warranty.

Couple questions:

1. do I have to run a 4L65 behind a 6.0L or can I make my 700R4 work with it?

2. Do I have to change the fuel tank to one with a baffle along with an intank pump or can I use an external pump with my original tank?

3. What does a guy do with the electronics? Get the motor in the truck, use the factory harness and computer, and then have it reprogrammed?


Another issue, is that I am a very busy person and I don't have a ton of extra time to do a complicated swap. There is something to say about it only taking a day basically to swap with another gen 1 small block. THe next question is if my 700R4 can handle 500+HP or not....:whistle::thumb: It's got all the goodies in it, but I kind of doubt it. If I go gen 1 it will most likely be a 355 or 383, possibly with a Weind 142 supercharger. I've always wanted a blower. I can't go big block, because I know a BBC torque band doesn't work well with a 700R4, and I want something that is easy to keep cool this time around so starting out with a 350 block is sounding pretty good at the moment.
 
Its as easy or as complicated as you and/your wallet make it. You can have a 6.0 in and running/driving in a weekend no problem as long as you prepair for it by doing everything you can ahead of time(like sensor adapters, motor mounts, etc).

1. You can run your 700 behind an LS motor as long as you get a drive by cable throttle body unit (pre 03 or 03+ converted to drive by cable)

2. To get you moving, an in line pump will work just fine. People just have troubles with inline pumps when the tank gets below 1/4 full or so. Fuel slosh can starve the pump. But you can always do that until you feel like doing an in tank pump (a tank out of an 87-91 k5 with an upgraded pump is the perfered method)

3. About a brazillion ways of doing it... If i was YOU, i think, i would get an engine package. One that is a motor, with a modified harness and a computer. It will be a three wire hook up. EASY! Only thing you would need to do is trim out any un needed wires from your current 85 harness.

If your wallet can support it, these swaps can be done super quick and easy! Its only ever so slightly more complicated than a normal engine swap as far as actually doing it goes. Its the research that can be time consuming. But for me, its fun! Reading up on what to do and what can be done is awesome!
 
Or you buy the motor mounts, carb intake and put your carb on it and have it in and running in a day :whistle:
