RJFguitar's resto-mod - went offroad

carbs are ghey.... ;)

But they are easy and not time consuming so it would fit his needs. Unless he is looking for good mileage..... :haha: fyi every person i know with a 6.0 in a stock rig is lucky to get 12. If 8 or more could be had with a carb without the electronic stuff, it would be worth it to me in a play toy. In a dd, no.

The whole reason (IMHO) to go to a 6.0L would be to gain the awesome modern EFI system that they have. If I was going to stick with a carb, common sense would tell me to just stick with a gen 1 motor.

Yah but the ls series stuff has all forged bottom end and roller valvetrain from the factory. You could buy one cheap, throw carb on and have a stronger engine vs another old school flat tappet sbc. Im not saying its better than efi. Just quicker and easier and you said your a busy guy. Just throwin out my 2 cents.

Its as easy or as complicated as you and/your wallet make it. You can have a 6.0 in and running/driving in a weekend no problem as long as you prepair for it by doing everything you can ahead of time(like sensor adapters, motor mounts, etc).
Making the motor swap happen in one weekend may be possible, but preparing for the swap with all the small stuff still counts as time and labor to get the project actually done.:wink1:

3. About a brazillion ways of doing it... If i was YOU, i think, i would get an engine package. One that is a motor, with a modified harness and a computer. It will be a three wire hook up. EASY! Only thing you would need to do is trim out any un needed wires from your current 85 harness.
Do you have any links or company names that have some "install kits" or what not to make the swap as simple as possible?

You do make a point. Does an LS motor still accept the old school HEI distributer? I don't know squat about the newer GM stuff. I went strait from 80's GM stuff, to all the Dodge Cummins stuff. I've never even looked all that close at my wife's 5.3 in her '03 Yukon. :doah:

Here is the situation guys. I had actually taken the K5 out for a quick run around the block last night to charge the batteries up so that I could put it bed for about 8 weeks. I start rice harvest today ( for those of you that have followed my other thread know what I am talking about, big day for the BIG bankout:woot:) and will be working 100 hrs p/week until early November. Looks like I'll have time to think about all this and make a good decision. I'll likely get on this motor project sometime around thanksgiving, or a little before, since work slows down to a comfortable pace that time of year.

No distributors. Coil packs. Summit has an edelbrock kit with the intake and and a special ecm for coil on plug ignition. Its $684 for the whole setup, but itd have you going right meow. But on the other hand a new wiring harness could be had for around that cost and have efi. It all comes down to if you want it done quick and easy, or if you wanna spend the time on the research for efi.

For as thorough as you seem to be on all of your work, why hack it and put a carb on it???

Oh contraire! There is a gmpp front drive distributor kit that uses a small block FORD distributor! Get a dui hei sbf distributor and your good to go! Even allows for use of a mechanical sbf fuel pump. Pretty bitchen setup. But also like $450.

Link? thats kind of awesome :doah:

I have wanted for a long time now, to get a 6.0 and do the distributor kit and run a quadrajet on it in my 78. Super reliable, and good power for a woods truck.

Pretty sweet. But i would only want that in a true all alone in the woods type setup. Other than that, i would much prefer the stock EFI setup.

Ok ill stop with all the hijacking, but damn this is sweet. Im doing it next motor go around.:D

490 hp with a cam and some head work at 6200 rpms. Yes please :woot:

You could find a junkyard ls, spend the $500 or so on that kit. And have a strong motor ready to go for under 2k I bet, and never need to mess with a wiring harness for us dumb folks

Now, to be fair, there is a **** tone of money in that motor. the front drive kit is $450, the distributor probably another $200, intake about another $300, roller rockers $350, cam and lifters, $450, water pump, if you went electric about $300 mechanical is $400, etc.

Thats over $2000 right there. Then you need to buy the motor! Its alot cheaper to go the distributor-less route with the msd setup but then you dont have the reliability of a distributor that uses off the shelf parts.
