Rubicon trip May 13-15th 2016

Shoot, I'm not going to be able to make it. It should be a blast though!

Tell me about it. But if you guys camp at loon again I might be able to bring the dd out friday

Where do you guys want to meet at before we head up there? I live a quarter mile from Safeway in Pollock Pines and have no problem meeting up there. That way, if anyone needs any last minute supplies, you can get it before heading out.

Scott

Met in Georgetown last time. Doesn't make any sense for me to travel over to Pollock Pines since I'm coming from the North.

I think the better question is, which way are we going to run it?

1) Briefly talked about going in backwards from Tahoe and camping at Buck Island. Then heading back out Tahoe.

2) Go in from Tahoe and exit Loon Lake

3) Start at Loon and finish at Tahoe

4) Start at Loon, camp at Buck, head back to Loon and start Fordyce!

5) nakid and blindfolded, see what happens (just my style) :D

And since I'm coming from the other side of the state, it will be a straight shot to where ever we sleep the first night.

Im beginning to think june will be too early to run the trail completely. I have some recent pics of the con and its still under 4 feet of snow. Maybe we'll luck out but are there any later dates thay work for you @K85 Octane ? If the weather is warm enough to tent im down with the snow if it comes to that.

Ok cool. Ill keep updating now and again as I know a few people trekking into soup bowl and back. No idea how they find there way with that much snow.
How tough is this trail or section that u guys thinking about? Would love to come along but rather not take on body damage. My rig is an all purpose rig. Dnt laugh and no I'm not ghey just cant afford a hardcore only rig. lol

That obstacle is avoidable. It's more or less a milestone on the trail. I'm confident you could get to at least soup before you got close to taking damage....in fact that's where I got to before I had a little scrape.

Beyond that part of the trail there's a few moderate squeezes and big sluice to deal with, which if navigated right my just earn you a few bumper scrapes. Once you get through that and head into rubicon springs it's fairly easy with the last obstacle being cadillac hill. I took the most damage there. I was tired and we were rushing a bit so naturally I got up against a tight spot in the trees.

If you had sliders I would say that would prevent most of the damage.

If you search blazers on rubicon on youtube you should find K85 Octanes videos, which will give you an idea what the trail looks like. Never hurts to watch a bunch of videos at that.

Don't worry no one will judge you. There's been people who have gotten through that trail with much less.

I walked away with a tiny scratch, of which I probably couldn't find again if I wanted to. But, it helps being in the rear, watching 2 other blazers and their lines. Like WTLDBO said, going in from Loon Lake to Soup Bowl is nice, no body damage. You can go to Buck Island and back to Loon Lake without problems either, just gotta be smart. After Buck Island, well, it gets tight. Rocks and trees.

We didn't do Big Sluice, WTLDBO is thinking of "New Big Sluice", the major downhill rock section in the later video. Big Sluice would (as I'm told) eat us alive. Smaller vehicles and those without worry can do that trail. From the sounds of it, I'll probably never do it. I did however do the very short and optional Little Sluice, though not much of an accomplishment since it's remodel. That is also in one of the videos. Zak took the most damage following the toyota into "Squeeze Rock". It is exactly 1" narrower than a blazer fender to fender lol.

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely have the itch and will b following this thread.

I'm fine with the rescheduling. I just gotta have at least two weeks advance notice to get home time granted for whatever weekend is chosen.

Scott

Yeah we'll definitely give early notice.

I'm hoping to be ready before that but I'd like to do a shakedown run at hollister before I step on to the rubicon.

lol why would you start now? Rubicon IS your shakedown run, as history dictates.

let me see about the date change, weather is getting hotter though
anyone else 100% going with it in July?

Hahaha indeed that is true! Yeah its warming up a bit but it's always reasonable in the sierras.

I feel like July is a safe bet for me. I know skunked is swapping frames...
