RYOKEN HELP !!!!! My Dual Battery Install With Payoff pics (pics updated 2/18/08)

Here are some pics of the legs that I fabbed up today at work.

I forgot one in my bag so there is only 8 in this pic
8-1legs.JPG

This is the first one I welded with TIG.:(

And here is the last one I welded. Better but still not perfect:o
last weld.JPG

And here is a look inside. Fender washer with a 1/2-13 nut welded to the underside.

Each leg has a 1/2-13 grade 8 bolt 1.5" long that will attach the box to the body of the truck.

Here is how the legs will be set up. There will also be a row of 3 down the center but I need to cut them down and shape them to fit the tranny tunnel.
6outerlegs.JPG

And here is a shot of the box ontop of the 6 outer legs just for reference. The legs will all need to be evened and the box will be level when all is said and done.

I might also drop the outer legs down to just about the tranny tunnel and leave the inner row out just put a piece of rubber underneath the box to add support but prevent metal to metal squeek. I do like the height of it with the 4" outer legs it gives the rear bench a sort of "center console".

hmmm, innovative.. cool.. I always love seeing people going with stainless stuff..

looks like your picking up the TIG.. How hard is TIG? I'm very proficient in all other forms, but have never touched a tig.. I'm an excellent torch welder from back in the day when we brazed all our qrter panels and thought that may actually have the most in common technique-wise..

anyway, looks stout.. my only concern would be sheetmetal cracking... Any sort of backing plates planned?

and as always, if ya wanna shoot the sh*t on different wiring configs, etc, gimme a holla...

I am gonna weld backing plates down to the sheet metal out of 16 gauge. I planned on 3X3 with the diamond shape fore and aft rather than a square if that makes sense.

As far as how hard is TIG? I think it is pretty easy if you have your amps set right. With a footpedal, you can back the amps down if you are set too hot, kinda like a throttle for current.

I equate it to gas welding but using electricity rather than a flame. The rod is fed very similarly as gas welding. The hardest part for me was keeping the tungsten out of the puddle. Once it gets filler metal on the tungsten it disrupts the arc and it does not weld nice at all. It spits and makes alot of colors kinda like a Roman Candle.

The best part is the really localized heat and zero spatter or slag. All of the welds on those pipes had a wire brush put to them and that is it, well except where I ground out the tungsten I got stuck in the bead:doah:.

When I get my own house with a garage (I live in a condo) I am gonna buy a TIG machine. It really is a lot of fun to weld with TIG:D

I'd love to build something like my dash out of tigged aluminum or ss.. heck, i'd love to build headers, oil pans, yada, yada....

whats a tig run? $$?

Here is my idea for the backing plates for the box.

The red is the backing plate welded to the floor of the cab.
The Blue is the pipe leg.
The black is the battery box.

The plates I use will probably as square as these in the picture:haha:

Depends on the size. The syncrowave 350 we have at work is around $5000 but it is for production type fab work. It runs on 440V too:D.

We also have a lincoln tig but I am not sure what it is.

There are smaller ones for the average joe also. They seem to be around $1000-$2000

The last time I used a tig was back in 8th grade.

For a decent one, about $500-$1000.

yea, after you hit it w/scotchbrite pad! imo, think it would look good and not scratch as bad as paint

btw, if thats 304 stainless it will rust also, it has enuff carbon in it that a carbon rod works real good, but will also welder higher grade, but splatter more, you can tell w/a magnet...it will have some attraction if 304...if higher grade, magnet won't try to attach, ...
300 series is an austenitic steel, little to no attraction, and little rust. 400 series is martinsetic, more magnetic and will rust.

Well I have decide to change again and keep the updates here in this thread. The blog is a nice idea but with all of the pics I currently have this is easier to do and easier for you guys to see.

I got my tax return so today I dropped $401 for 2 orbital blue top Marine Deep Cycle batteries. That includes sales tax and a $10 core for each battery:rolleyes:. No pics yet as it was dark when I got home but with the batteries in hand I can now mock up and weld my hold down bracket and the base for inside the box for the battery.

I still need to get my lugs for the cable ends and some terminal lugs like readymix put on his firewall as well as my main battery disconnect switch. My goal is to get it all finished before TDS, because I intend to be at Truckhaven that same weekend with David and the gang:D.
So far I am not doing to well with staying on track:o.

I will try to get some pics up tomorrow before the game.

Get some pics quick.

I am running out of patience with this project so far.
Also, no one in MS has those cable relief things you have.....but I came up with a better solution for my install.

I'll get the pics together when I update my website.
