RYOKEN HELP !!!!! My Dual Battery Install With Payoff pics (pics updated 2/18/08)

Here are a few pics to show how the batteries will be in the box with the holddown mocked up. The batteries will be sitting on some 1/4" rubber to keep them above the heads of the bolts and there will be rubber underneath the holddown to protect the top of the batteries.

From the rear.

From the front.

I am gonna use 1" or 1.5" square tube to make a lower bracket just to keep the bottom of the battery located. Just some added insurance to keep them in place. There will be one between the two batts and one that goes in front to keep them located front to back.

Here is how I want to do the lower bracket.

UberKewl MSPaint skills:D

I am undecide if I want to make a full T like shown and drill holes for the bolts through the bracket (I already have bolts long enough) or to make short brackets in the center of the batteries and inbetween the 3 bolts in the front.

Opinions welcome.

Bolt it from the left and right side of the tray. Just weld a few nits in the end of a piece of 1x1 square stock.

Mount it about halfway up from the bottom.

Why did you put the dual batteries inside, rather than under the hood? What are you planning on using them for?

What Readymix said. Someone jacked my **** that is why I am doing this whole thing. That and my battery try is cracked almost in half and I am gonna J cut the front fenders:D.

Dik

His last battery was stolen from under the hood.....no inner fenders + SoCal = Theft of battery.

Ira, Here are some pics of my work.
I started to update my website but the template images bit me in the a$$ halfway through. I will update that image gallery as I go along.

That looks nice. I might run some conduit if I can figure a way to attach it with my fittings. I already have some free stuff to run my radio wires to my front center console:D.

Dik

I just bought that because I couldn't find anything that would work better.
I think it came out better than I thought it would though.

Here is what I got done today.

First I got a new spool, for the welder not the rig:D. I got a bigboy spool this time:D
My new spool.JPG

I used the new spool to weld my legs to the floor of the truck.

The legs were a bitch to weld, mainly due to how many times I had to bolt down and subsequently remove all the bolts to finish welding the legs (about 10 times:doah:).

I also burned my forehead with one of the legs. I just finished cutting it to length and I had sweat running down my face. I go to wipe it off with the back of my glove and branded my forehead with a 1" SCH 40 burred pipe:doah:.

These were waiting for me when I got the mail today:D

25 of em all tinned copper for 1/0 cable with a 3/8" hole ($33 shipped from Jersey to El Cajon)

I even had some time check some flex
Flexin.JPG

Yes my son is a long haired hippy:D

That is all for tonight I will try to get more this weekend. I hope to get the firewall clear and run my cables. I am still waiting on my switch and my LED turnsignals for the front after I J-cut the fenders:D.

I almost forgot, I got my 7/8 allen that I milled from 4340 back from heat treat today. It was oil quenched so it is now black and wont rust:D

Oh ya oil soaked undercoating will catch on fire when it is underneath what you are welding:o. I had to put out 4 or 5 small fires while welding the legs in.

I got some more done yesterday but had a family get together so only half a day:(. I finished all of the lower mounting brackets for the base of the batteries and about all I have left is to drill 2 holes for the cables, get my switch (should be here Tuesday) and weld the hinges for my lid on. Once that is done I can tear it down, smooth out the welds and shoot some paint.

My daughter almost single handedly removed the AC from the firewall:bow:

No pics yet I will get some soon:D

I had that same problem when I put in my floor. I had to put one out with my hands because it was right by the fuel line. Not so fun but my truck didn't explode...always a plus

More pics

Here are the positioners that, well, position the batteries.
lowerpositioners.JPG
The back one is made from 1" angle that I cut one side down to 3/4" and cut a 45 to clean it up. Boxed it in and welded it up.
rearpositioner.JPG
the side one is a 1" wide piece of 1/8" also 45d and welded. This one ensures the upper bracket will have room as it needs 1/8" between the battery and the wall of the box.
sidepositioner.JPG
You can see in one of my earlier pics I have the batteries sitting on some rubber mats. Well they were too tall and did not allow the batteries to sit as tight as I liked so I got some 3/8" plexi and made a standoff to keep the batteries off of the bolt heads. My bolt heads are 5/16" tall so the plexi leaves just enough to clear them with the bolt head markings. You might be able to see how I beveled the edges to clear the weld beads of my positioners. The upper piece of angle keeps the batteries located front to back. I still need to attach the lid. It will have a hinge at each end and will be split in the center from driver to passenger.

And here is the grand finale. A pic of "The Mark of The IDIOT"!!!!!!!

I forgot I broke the screen on my camera today. LCD screens don't like having a +40# battery dropped on them:doah:. It was on its side and I did not see the camera there when I set it upright. I went to see if the pictures I took came out and the screen is all white with a giant spiderweb like black crack all the way across.

Guess it is a good excuse to get a new camera, maybe something bigger than the 2 Mpix I currently am using:D

Looking good so far! When you are mounting batterys like that, does the box need to be vented?

I realized I did not post the pic with the horrible rubber mat so here it is.

battsandrubber.JPG

And one more of the plexi that replaced it. I am pretty proud of this as it is probably the most precise thing in this whole build:doah::D

Since I am running AGM batteries mine will not be vented. If I was running a water filled battery I would vent it somehow out the bottom of the truck.

Dik
AGM? That would be dry cell batterys? Probably gonna have to make something like this cause I'm going to j-cut the fenders and there's no room on the firewall cause that's where my air intake is so my only option is behind the cab

It is Absorbed Glass Mat. The acid is mixed with a jelling agent and saturated in a fiberglass mat then spiral wound with a lead sheet. In theory there is no free acid to spill, but I have been told that if they break the gel can leak out.

The ones I got are Exide Orbital Marine Deep Cycle and Starting. The same thing as a Optima Blue Top but cheaper and a better warranty.
