You now better than I, how cool it is to gander at it once it's done and tell your self, I built that. Being good or bad, it never existed before you made it. :pimp:

I have never used a more durable rattle can zinc primer
I used the green zinc on some sandblasted Lugnuts then some Rattle can white
I have hit them many times with an impact
the white flaked off easily but the green is still holding up
awesome stuff

one thing I learned today when I took that back off to store in the garage, it'll be the last time I can do it without the engine hoist prolly... :doah: :haha:


once the side tubes start going in, it'll be too unwieldy without the crane...

I'm sure it does fine.... it's the guys using cr@ppy enamel or lacquer primer that need to step it up to some zinc, epoxy or urethane...

Oh, we use a similar catalyzed product for aluminum signs, never thought about using it on steel.
 
How does that primer compare to say the Rustoleum Etching stuff on the shelf at Lowes? Ive used etching primer for years, going to duplicolor (because everything they make is watered down crap) to the rustoleum. Ive always had good results but wonder how much better this stuff is.

Also does it dry fast or is it a walk away over night deal?
 
it blows away anything rusto makes as far as etching goes.... by far the best etching air-dried primer.. only thing better is a 2 part zinc wash.. well, that and a 2 part epoxy will generally etch as good as this...

but any "self etching" primer in a spray can is a modern day marketing ploy with little to back it up chemically... they call just about anything self etching these days...

developed for alum, but those same properties make it great on steel too...

oh, and it dries damn fast... couple coats, dry to touch in 15 minutes or less...
 
just a couple pics today..... yesterday I got all the mount holes drilled and bolted up the coffin... today I pulled it off for the next month or so to fab up the back end of it in the shop..

the 2 back angle pieces where quite time consuming... this mitering stuff is a slow process... but got them fitted up... the x-brace was temp to control the top tube width...

the back 2 "points" will be cut off and 1/2 rounded when I bring the side angle tubes from the toolboxes in to that node... so they match the roundness of the top tube of the tubegate..

the rest of the weekend was spent beginning to build the tube gate and beginning the hinges.. but you'll have to wait till next weekend for pics of that... the hinges are gonna take forever... :doah:
 
it'll look goofy with the tubegate more than likely, but I haven't ruled it out.. the final decision and subsequent cutting will be made when I bring the angle ones in from the side boxes...
 
here's a quick pic with me holding the tubegate up there of the issue... it wont be a huge rounding... just enough to carry that 2" radius around the edge to the outer angled tube....

you can also see the beginning of one of the hinges sitting on top of that tube.. basically a 1.75 turning inside a 2".... I'll cut a window in one spot of the 2" to correspond with 2 sides "flattened" on the 1.75.. like a pickup hinge for removal...
