Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

I would think heat sheild would be fine. But maybe you could wrap the muffler in header wrap? Or perhaps that starter heat shield stuff?

well, I was thinking about one of these heatpad kinda deals http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hsp-110614/overview/ attached to the alum heatshield.... they have sealed edges and are attached with screws.. no glueing..

but I'm also thinking that maybe just a double heat shield of alum with one spaced off the other by like an inch might be a good idea..

added that lower rear tube today...

gonna see about getting that die I need in sometime next week.... I think what I'm gonna do is start fitting up the 1.5 lower stuff with just a couple tacks here and there... if I need to cut em off to get it out the door, easy peezy to put it back together and finish weld it outside..

gonna be weird bending, gonna have to sit the bed on the floor and have the bender stick up thru the middle and hurdle tubes to bend... :haha:

also ordered up stuff I need for the spare tire mount.... btw... does anyone recognize what my front rim might be? pro comp, American, etc? 16.5 x 10.. forget the bs at the moment...

one on the right..

I thought it was a pro comp, but it has 8 windows, not 10...

Only eleventy billion companies made those D window steelies.

Any markings on them?

eh, I don't know, they're out mounted on Mutt in the POURING rain at the moment.... :haha:

when I pull one off to mock up the spare tire mount, i'll inspect it closer... it doesn't have to be exact, but I wouldn't mind it... I'd want to add the simulock too it at some point, prolly # 67 on the to-do list......

gonna run a 2" tube off that upper x-tube, up thru a 2" hole in one of kerts spare tire plates... than cap the tube off with one of these..

than i'll be running 3 of these 5" large gussets off it..

Those gussets are badass, but will they look out of place on your rig?

Your is all curvy, soft edges, etc.

I guess it will be mostly covered up though.

Looking good overall! Love this build!

thanks mang...

to be honest, the most important thing I was looking for in the gussets was large... most are 3".. couple here and there where 4... I was actually gonna make some, but, I saw those...

I actually REALLY like the design look for Mutt.. I think they'll look good, the bed seems to be kinda a mix of curve and angularity with the miters and such..

and as you said, they'll barely be seen, if at all...

the tube cap deal is a bit over the top, but hopefully is a nice touch to my plan.... I REALLY liked the idea of passing the tube thru a tire plate and getting 2 welding surfaces, as opposed to just welding to the bottom of it... for strength with 100+ lb's of tire up there...

Merry christmas man!

thanks, you too!

I'm officially "off" till march... file for unenjoyment jan 2... so I've got all next week pretty much to start bending up the lower tubes and such if I can get that die here...

that sucks, looks like Pro Tools doesn't open back up till Monday... oh well, I'll see about bolting up the gooseneck today...

boy, my Milwaukee 1/2" drill is getting a workout on Mutt these days... 14 more 1/2" holes in the frame today.... :haha:

ignore the gloss, I just douched it, needs to flatten/dry..

hardware is 14 1/2" fine thread with heavy washers and pinchnuts to the frame, and 26 all together....

the 6 up top where easy peezy, just stand on top and use my fatarse like a drillpress.. it was the 8 on the sides that kicked my nads a bit... :haha:

tomorrow looks like it may be the last nice nice day for awhile.. I'll have to try and make it productive.. wish I had the centerpins and new u-bolts to move the axles forward.. but maybe I can see about getting the back shocks in and fart around with the brakelines too..

WOW!!!!! How have I missed this??? :eek1:

AWESOME build!!! Looks absolutely SICK!!! Fantastic work, as per your usual!!!

Now I really want to build a tube bed!!!! :doah:

Can't wait to see the finished product!!!!!
