Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

It happens in Iowa frequently. If it looks like your truck is from a farm anymore you better be careful. And it is a costly fine.

I'm guessing it's a much more common practice in states where agriculture is huge....

and Martin, not sure why there is no such thing as tax free gas.. obviously one of the issues is it would have to be dyed like diesel I'd guess....

some actual Mutt stuff.. well, hopefully I can get some stuff done the next couple days.. the need for that other die kinda thru me for a loop... so I changed things up a bit till I can get that and decided to pull the bed and do some work on it in the Lab™ .....

have to actually angle it to get it in the door, too wide...

so i'll spend a couple days and do some finish welding, add that tube up by the spare... if it's decent outside I can see about getting the gooseneck plate mounted up...

technically I could probably do the lower toolbox tubes with the bed off.. but considering I can't use the bender with it in there, I'll probably remount the bed in a couple weeks when I get the die in...

I know if you have a gas burning tractor (old) in Nebraska, and you use it on the farm, you can do some paperwork and get refunded. I know of one cheap ass who does it. There are just so few gas burning tractors anymore, that no one bothers. That being said, the amount of fuel you guys go through, I just assumed it was tax free.

yeah, I guess the "gas burning equipment" sector is pretty small... :haha:

we have a good friend/customer who owns a crane company (came and picked up all the boats from Sandy) who has 2 dizzle pumps at his yard, 1 for each.. the cranes run 2 tanks, one for over the road, and the other for the actual crane...

I guess the gov looks at gas burning boats as a personal fun thing, not a biz equipment deal like a dizzle boat might be..

:haha:

well, after flipping this thing over a few times by myself in the shop for finish welding and such....

I'd "guess" the current weight to be about 300 lb's... I can dead lift it off the ground, but barely... flipping it over is an adventure... :haha:

one issue I did not foresee is that I had one of the guys from work stop over to get it off the truck and into the garage.. that was NOT easy as you need to angle it to get it thru the door...

but now that we're going on layoff, it's gonna be more difficult to get peeps over here... tho I may have my bosses stop by on the way home from the boat factory.. more on that in a sec...

with 3 people it would be easy and not get all scraped up... gonna be a week or so till I'm ready to put it back on the rig.. I'm REALLY not sure if I can/could do it with the engine hoist by myself.. or at all.. it's conceivable, but it'll be an undertaking for sure.. i'll see what happens...

that's the side work I have coming up for my time off... our company is opening back up our production factory.. so 2 to 4 days a week down there.. gonna finish up the one hull down there.. it's ready for motors...

here's what they look like..

just ordered 2 of these for it...

700 g's and it's all yours..... :haha:

tell ya what, frickin killer hull design for a sportfish.. them boats fly thru some nasty chit...

oh, and duh.. huge post and I forgot the bed pic...

added the center spare support.. everything is finish welded, joints blasted and a fresh coat of Liberator green on it.. ready to go back out for the next installment of tube, tabs and goodness...

hopefully weds, I'll get the gooseneck bolted to the frame...

btw... 2 of those 550 hp marine Cummins, WITH ZF gears, are 100 g's....

and actually, if I end up waiting on some help to get the bed back out, I'll prolly put that x-bar on the back tube section below the tubegate that I was talking about.. not a big project, but something I can do inside..

I think some creative use of "cribbing" and an engine hoist should allow you to man handle it pretty easily.

it's more the boom length, to get to a centered lift point.. which more than likely is gonna need to be thru the "C' hoop... not a big deal, till you go to set it on the truck..

I'll probably see about draggin my bosses over, they owe me their souls anyway... :deal:

I was going to suggest an engine hoist and some straps. It'd probably be easy if you if you put that center bar in so you have a centrally located lift spot.

I can always lend a hand. Give me a few more weeks for the shoulder to heal if you want two hands. lol

ok.. question... my fuel tank design is probably gonna sit about 1" below the top lip of the framerail...

I'm gonna be running my 50 series DIRECTLY below the tank... I'd like to tuck it up as close to the tank as I can get... i'm figuring i'll do a heatshield of some sort off the muffler top an inch or so... standard metal-type one.. than keep that below the tank a few inches...

do you think that will be enough? or should I plan on keeping it down substantially more from the tank? I could stay off the tank 4 or 5" probably, but i'd rather tuck it up as much as I can into the rails..

I wonder if I could somehow insulate the bottom of the tank? i'm sure I could stick some of the fancy heat barrier to the bottom of the tank.. but i'd be concerned about road spooge getting in between it and the tank and failing....

any brilliant CK5 suggestions?

Lizard Skin ceramic heat barrier?A little pricey, but I believe it's paintable, essentially takes up no space, apparently works really well for the intended purpose, and with your metal prep skills, once it's applied and painted, road spooge should be a non-issue for a very long time.

yeah, good idea.. should run that and a shield at a minimum... wonder if you really load that stuff up mil-wise if it helps exponentially better... :dunno:

that's what I had planned to run on the underside of the K5, so picking some up now wouldn't be too painful.. even if it was to just use a bit on Mutt's tank...

I just wonder if I could build some sort of 2-side shield that sandwiches some heatshield-y material, as opposed to just a single layer of metal...
