Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

It took me all day to grind, sand and prep a bumper on Sunday..... Probably because my oldest son requested help tightening the chain on his bike (this turned into adjusting all his friends and my third boys bikes too) the middle boy needed help assembling the interior on his model Nova, the wife wanted the kitchen sink fixed and my daughter NEEDED to play Candy Land.

I am not complaining at all, it just feels weird to get up into the Garage at 9:00 AM and have 2 hours of real work done on the original project at 8:00 PM.:doah::haha:

and to be honest, for as selfish as I am, I am jealous of that life.. it's a life that was taken from me, never got to experience it for long, and regret not having...

so I may as well build cwazy chit! :haha:

I always thought I'd be married and have kids...just never happened...and I am at least thankful for not having to go through a bad marriage.
I just can't believe I got lucky enough to have your attention for as long as it took to get the Blazer prepped...makes me wish I had another project to use those skills I learned, but I am too broke down to do that again...and I too am still paying down that loan for the project.

I look back and I know that was one of the hardest projects I'e ever done...and the most satisfying at the same time...

certainly would of been easier if I was across town.. :haha:

I've learned, teaching by typing is not so simple... :doah:

Ryoken - revved for a metal day tomorrow.. crank some tunes, burn some steel.. fun times... :weld: :saweet:

If you got a piece of 12" pipe, you could weld a piece of 2" square tube to make a leg so it's a T about waist high. Then weld another piece of 2" tube 90* to the leg at the right height to go into a receiver on your truck. Instant bending form at work height. Then you can clamp the aluminum on each side to hold it to the pipe.

If you can't find a piece of pipe that short, we can always cut a log down and turn it to size. Easy enough to turn a recess into each end to make a lip for clamping. Then a hole can be drilled out to fit the tube (round or square) to make the T.

Once you anneal the aluminum you'll be surprised how easy it is to bend.

sure, that'd be great if ya keep your eye out for a shorter hunk, thanks... :D

only if it's something manageable tho.. you don't need to be dealing with a 300 lb 8' er or something... :haha:

my prob is still finding the right students and having an issue revealing the secrets I've bled for, to people that don't respect/deserve it IMO... I just can't "teach everyone"..thus, why I'm truly not a teacher and more of a mentor, I suppose...

Once in a while, I'll get a question in my build thread from someone that is SO insightful or specific, that it's clear that someone has been literally "studying" every page of the build, reading every word and trying to understand what's going on at a much deeper level than most people do.

When I get a question like that, it makes me feel good and I try to spend a lot of time responding with as much detail as I can. If someone is willing to spend that kind of time doing their "road work" I'm always happy to share just a bit more of my insights or theories to keep them motivated and learning. :waytogo:

only piece left is the ramped, square-holed piece that will get welded in right above the triangacube.....

good question..

I had always planned on the 2 from the onset.. but yeah, I did start considering it when I was having trouble deciding/finding latches...

I wasn't gonna do it on the outside, it would have been on the inside, integrated with the inner panel.. want that clean, "alum panel only" look on the outside..

but, obviously, that'd be more complicated and involved to design/engineer/source/build.. and one of the big downfalls IMO would have been, no redundancy... with the 2 on it, no way for something to open it accidentally, whereas a central one could conceivably have a piece of cargo lean on it and open it accidentally.. conceivably..

and throw in the obvious difficulty of multiple moving parts, etc..

I use to have a service truck that had the tail gate that lifted straight up, and then folded down. Got a brand new service truck and service box. It had a central latch just like a tailgate. I drove from Topeka Kansas to Saint Marys Kansas with two 8D batteries. When I got to Saint Marys, I found the tail gate down and no batteries.......

I woulda hated to have been the car behind ya, them 8D's are stout! :haha:

I drove back to look for them. I found them when I saw the firetrucks hosing off the highway, and the new crew filming it.....

They had already been hauled into Topeka. They made a way bigger deal out of it than it was. I kind of felt bad.
