Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

I've had to explain to the girlfriend the concept of "Blazer Time." The truck takes a little longer to get places, partially because it's a bit slower and doesn't corner so quick, but also because people will stop and chat. Whether it's housewives asking about the Smurf paint job, or gearheads asking about technical stuff ... well, you guys know, it happens to you too. It's just funny.

One day in the taqueria parking lot a guy in a suit comes up from his BMW and says "That your truck?" and I'm thinking he's gonna bitch me out about my parking job (it was within the lines, it's just a small lot.)

Nope, he wanted to know if those were the Bilstein 5100's and what I thought of them. 15 minutes of suspension discussion ensued :haha: As Ryoken points out, it takes all kinds :)

oh, I friggin luv it... you wanna yack hotrods????!!!! I'm all about it... general hotrod cam specs?!!!!??? axle wrap?!!!!? tranny's????! luv it... I 'll keep ya an hr at the gas station..... :haha: where ARE you guys??????!!!!!!!!!??? come hang at the LAB™!!!!!!!! :saweet: :saweet: :saweet:

one thing I've found is, well, especially when I was at the car show.. well, really mainly there, people wanted to talk about, ask things, pertaining to THEIR project.. and that's cool.. for as much as I'd luv to yack about what my build thoughts are, I'm happy to help others with their vision... moreso in some ways...

I do have to say...I found it kinda funny that I submitted Mutt's pics to "fullsize chevy" dotcom and have gotten pretty much no response.. most of me could give a rat's arse... but a certain part of me want's to call them out for being a bunch of "homometal luvvin, bolt-on mofo's who wouldn't appreciate fab if it stabbed em in the neck" types...

I spit when I read that....
Those toolbags over there on Fullsize must have been knocked totally speechless by the wonder of the Mutt, that is one of the baddest Full size, custom incarnations to ever roam the planet.

thanks..x times eleventy.. I was a bit surprised... my apologies to CK5... and that's sayin a lot that I would post on someone else out of boredom... but mang, them guys appear to be in some "newest rig rules kinda motife"....

well, I just went over and looked and I did get this reply out of 172 views... "Hell yes!!! That may be the baddest looking OOBS I've seen. Love it man."

at least someone likes it.... :haha: whatever an OOBS is!??!!!?? :what:

sometimes I don't get it....... I occasionally meet them, and certainly will see some online who aren't enamored with Mutt...... I get it may be a design/rig that doesn't suit anything you would need/want, are into, but to kinda just poo poo what it took to build Mutt, I find amusing...

there are quite a few in here.... they've read this thread, and some even comment every now and than with a correction or tech help, yet would never consider sayin something like "hey, good effort... I know how long project x, y or z took", etc...

I must just get an auto-hate mode from a % of the world... they'll find 11ty reason in their brain why Mutt is ghey before they threw me a compliment...

anyway, on that note.... our marina bulkhead guys think the rig is neat... :woot: :haha:

many mallard pics have been taken to work on duck pics... gonna buy a printer so I can start printing out some art/concept/rig photos to help with that project..... I can soooo see this rig with the door logo's....

and the freakin light bar! dammit.. :haha: :saweet: I want that "extravagant expense" .... :haha: tellin ya, that's gonna look badarse on this rig... :pimp:

oh, and I took "in process" shrinkwrap pics today for a quickie explanation, but alas, forgot the camera in my golf cart... :doah: tomorrow....

oh, and a couple completely irrelevant tidbit's..... think we're upping our game down at work... we're looking to get a new travellift and pit... go from a 25 ton machine to a 50 ton... go from being able to haul 45 to maybe 50' boats now, to a machine that can pic up 75, 80' er's......

I'm all for it... doesn't really affect my pay in any way, other than bigger profits for the marina down the road...... f*ck all these 21 to 27 blow boat guys with free wind, and 55 grand a yr guys with 27" Searays they can't really afford... let's get those million dollar 60" sportfishes, eurotrash, etc, in here.. them guys got coin and KNOW they need to spend it....

and on a "Ryoken is a kook" note....... hopefully Malakai is being born in 1 to 4 days.......   :woot: :saweet: :ooo: :screwy: :haha:

Glad u got a posting response for the hard work! I saw on Facebook the full size Chevy page had a decent looking k5 on there! Surprised to see it after all we've been saying. Hell certain people are just "comparing sizes" lol. If u get what I mean. I got a new rig and an old rig. The new I see as disposable. Use abuse and get a new one. Our custom built stuff is way more precious and unique.

You deserve the credit! I know u don't need it as motivation but it's nice to hear. Got lots of blood sweat and beers in that. Lol sorry for the fast and loud reference.

thanks Bill..... eh, sometimes it's funny, the hater's that you meet in life.. eh, whatev's..... I like to think the positive outweighs the arsehole.. ya hope anyway...

here was my reply and an odd accounting of the build... :haha:

"thanks mang..... appreciate it...... I've built some pretty cool hotrods and trucks over the yr's, but am amazed daily at the response to this rig...... it's humbling...

here's a couple other random shots of the build...

I showed a friend of mine who is a professional fabricator/machinist and he was just as enamored by Mutt as I am! The before and after current pics are hard to believe it's the same truck, hard to believe this thread is that old already!

I am not 100% sure, but if I remember correctly about 10 years ago I think the lettering needed to be 3". As far as numbers, you are supposed to have a town where the business is located and a number. OR..... register with the DOT then you do not need anything except a DOT number and your business name. You see many trucking/hauling companies do this. Now you can have your logo happy on the front door and on the lower rear door DOT:12345678 Keeps it much cleaner and much more private as you are hauling.

What is the advantage to registering the truck commercially (vs. how you have it now)?

If it makes you feel any better, a guy I work with just got the carp tuna surgery and is very satisfied with the results.

In a perverse way, I'm looking forward to enjoying "Blazer Time" in a couple of years too..... head out with my boy on a Saturday morning on a simple donut run (which should only take 15 minutes) and don't show up back home for at least an hour!!!

My favorite are the guys who are super enthusiastic but don't really make much sense either.....

"Hey man, nice Bronco!.... my dad used to drive me around in a truck JUST LIKE THIS when I was a kid..........except it was yellow........ and it would go anywhere on 31" tires......etc. etc. Man I love these old Fords!!"

:haha:

Been there, done that. I once gave a friend a ride in Big Blue, with similar results. She insisted that my cab was smaller than the front of the Suburban her parents had owned once upon a time. I was unable to convince her that GM used the same parts (at the same exact size. no less) to construct the Suburban and Pickup cabs. :doah: I didn't even try convincing her that the 8' behind the seat was the same length as my 8' bed, either. I guess it looks just enough different for folks to not realize they're built on nearly identical versions of the same chassis. :dunno:

Oh. What sort of "inspection" do you hafta go through? :dunno:

(remember that I'm in one of the many non-inspection states, so I've never been through any sort of vehicle checkup).

state inspection, sniffer test... won't matter anyway once I go Cummins......

thanks..... I'm proud of how much effort I've put into the build so far.... I've banged pretty hard on it...

I can't believe you ruined a perfectly good crew cab with a flat bed to create this current monstrosity

Haters be :screwy:

yeah, it's one they've really improved on... it's just a question of how soon I can get it done...

wow, very nice compliment....

"Well you sir have inspired me to come out of my shell with my first post. From the west coast to the east coast truly a beautiful well thought out ride. What I can see is nothing but first class. Been involved in this stuff for over fifty years and can tell pride of craftsmanship, ship shape. Sweet, cannot wait to see the finished truck. Ron"

oh, here's a belly strap on a boat... it's a woven strap.. you tuck the plastic under it and plastic weld it to itself to anchor the wrap..

003_zps9kzj2s9y.jpg

and you run a center strap up top with a couple padded poles...

Mutt, hangin in front of a a cut job one I did yesterday... the buggy top looks like a duck head from the side! ;)
