Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

well, it'll be a hodge podge of painted, primered and old panels for a while... but I gotta head it in that direction... ;)

Now THAT is funny. :haha:

Paul painted that door in only 8 hours (...if you don't count the 40 years of "prep" spent learning all the cool shortcuts and tricks of the trade)

mom always said I was special! :haha: heck, i was finishing up sandblasting em at noon..... painted by dinner! :haha:

well, I may just keep it mechanical today with no painting.. forgot I killed the thinner yesterday.. and I really don't feel like going to the Ace on a sunday for thinner..

oh, and for the record, for those who didn't realize it... this rig, at some point, at least with the roof, and/or the whole, overall paint job, will be getting squirted in the back field at the marina... outside... the rig doesn't fit in the dungeon... so, paint it like a boat! :pimp:

so for today, I'll just swap in the fender, maybe freshen up that well a bit... and concentrate on rebuilding that new door as best as possible with what parts I have...

so.... plan for next weekend....

remove cowl, hood, ds fender and ds door...

strip cowl and fender, rg, fill, rr.... paint hood... reassemble...

that should make the rig reasonable looking for a bit.... well, even somewhat at least.. :haha:

than all I've got are the back doors, roof and back... i'll probably do the doors one weekend, and the roof/back on another...

thanks! here's a few better, end of the day shots...

I'm happy with the color... once the black tube bed and alum panels are on the back, should be pretty cool...

Mutt's summer schedule....

aug - 18, 19, 20 - 4" lift and x-over

sept - 1, 2, 3 - initial tubebed work...

there's gotta be some kind of law on the books about doing bodywork that fast....I'm going to get Polly to take a look into the Amity books...I'm pretty sure this two day deal was done away with when we cited Earl Scheib back before the trouble...
This "wet on wet" technique also seems questionable...I don't think we have an ordinance for that either...
We've never had these kinds of trouble in these paints before...a man goes painting...he tires...so he speeds up the process....the next thing you know the whole garage is red...:haha:

:haha:

nice....

eh, I definitely don't recommend people do what i just did... you can really cause yourself a problem if you don't overcoat at the right times......

it is riskier... and as I've mentioned many times in here, bodywork is all about managing risk... giving yourself the best percentage of a trouble-free, quality job... your paint is only as good as your substrate blah, yada, blah.... :pimp:

just a couple notations here...

Ice may notice, I got rid of the purple tint on the passenger window.. they had everything done except the drivers... it may, or may not be legal in joysey, but they are relatively strict around here too.... eventually I'll get rid of it all, and redo the back 3 in a smoke style tint..

got the ever so slightest of a tick developing in the ds 60 hub.. gotta get in there one night this week and take a peak...

and dagnabbit, I need to go down and figure something out for an antenna.. now the radio goes bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....... :dunno: :haha:

ok, here's a before / after.....

slowly but surely.....

It will look great when it is all one color....I kind of think it would look neat to have some kind of black something on the hood...inset....stripe...maybe?

Paul, I liked the way the Nason single stage layed down, and was quite happy with the gloss too...but how the hell do you cope with spraying single stage in a open garage like that? I got nibs in my rims, and I tried to keep the booth clean.
I can't imagine spraying SS outside.

more often than not, I do ok with dust.. a hood is obviously the big test.. which i will be spraying mine next week.. I've sprayed in enough sh*tholes over the yrs to know a few tricks.... my biggest complaint is the pervasiveness of the overspray.. i'm really not set up with full blown filters and good fans at the moment, so it takes a while to clear with just the 1 small fan going..

they didn't come out perfect... there's one small dent in the door I missed, plus some sandscratches in the fender and a bit of dust and orangepeel here and there... but like I said, at the end, I'll block out the whole cab, fix any small issues and overcoat it... it's a good trim and base...

spraying outside? just don't paint in the spring with the green pollen! :haha:

Do you use plain old box fans like at Walmart for $15.00?

I hadn't even thought of it.. I want to do some custom Kert emblems in black on the fenders, something like 502 EFI....

i hadn't thought of anything on the hood cuz it's a stocker.. cowl induction, sure... we'll see...

I do really want to replace my grill and turn signals tho... it's like $300 or so.. that's when I'll paint the metal header piece below the grill... and I'll do the chrome/gray grill, than paint the chrome semi black... no chrome! but the gray will help break it up up front...

yup, usually 2 of em if i got em.. but I'm down to one that only works on low....... :doah: I go thru a few of these a yr at work, sometimes i have decent ones, sometimes no.... 1 new one on high works pretty well depending on the room.....
