Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

oh, and yeah, I forgot to mention the one change... only gonna have lower, "under bed" storage on the driver side..

tho I'm gonna do a mirror of that 1.5 tube work on the ps too, but that'll be for a dual bat setup...

it's gonna be the best spot for down the road.. i'll make the enclosure to mimick the ds side somewhat...

I wasn't sure if I was gonna incorporate that into a new custom dog floor area at the back seat, or get it into the bed... the beds a solid choice cuz the winch in the back..... makes sense to have main distribution be based 1/2 way back there at least..

get the weight off the fenders...

in prep for CUMMINS swap in 2020.... :haha:

oh, and just to state the obvious.. the cute little badarse tailgate is definitely not an immediate need.. but I think it'll be neat.. cartoon-like to match the mallard... :pimp: do an alum panel for that too...

the majority of initial bulk is getting the tube bent/fitted for the boxes and mounting.. than once the skeleton is good, ya gotta get panels somewhat fitted so you can weld the panel mounts to the cage, yada, fit tank and mounts, pull and fully weld, paint, install, joy, etc...

the hitch area is ladder like with a couple cross tubes/footholds... with those grabrails, even with the tailgate up, it should be easy enough to get up/in there..

the tailgate when done and open, should make a good step too..

more dimensional minutia..

4 drawer assemblies..

34"W x 8"H x 28"D each...

mmmmm, 28" deep drawers.....

:haha: actually I think the big snappie KRL's are 29 deep drawers... :pimp:

seemed foolish to not utilize that whole space into the frame rail... kinda a tubed service bed with that middle square footwell area......

should be able to fit a good amount of tools/parts/fluids in those 5 cabinets...

I was just down doing final mesh's for tube ordering and boxes..

trimmed em down 1" W and H, but still 28" deep...

basically I'm looking at something like these, but in smooth..... with varied partitioning...

the only thing up in the air is how fancy I get... I have to see what the price difference is between that, where the full face is the drawer front, or something like this assembly,

with a separate door, than the trays slide out... I think you'd have to go this way for 2 thinner trays.. but I have a feeling that route really will add to the cost..

so what I think I'm gonna get is 4 like above in smooth 33 W x 7 H x 28 D.. with a single pull out drawer like above... than vary the partitioning depending on intended drawer use... one full length for long tools like prybars, etc... one with smaller compartments for parts, hardware...

run straps , cable/chain and such down in the lower big one...

but I bet all 5 of the boxes are still gonna be in the 2 g's range even with the simpler construction..... :doah:

Ryoken - going thru steel today trying to figure out the rear x-member/winch mount...

need some learnin here.....

NV4500's.....

so, hopefully Mutt'll be going up in tire size with new gears... been running stuff thru the calculator.. I could get by with the current drivetrain in there for a bit with the gears I'm looking to run.. but the rpm's will be a bit high...

I eventually want the nv4500 in it for the rpm's, highway use, mileage, joy, etc...

my main question is this...

eventually this rig will get the cummins.... will that swap put the bellhousing in the same spot as my 454? or will the whole drivetrain get moved back with the dizzle swap? and am I even looking at the same bellhousing between the 454 and the 6BT?

if that's the case, the 4500 will obviously wait till I do the cummins.. but it would have been nice to get a jump on the final drivetrain and get the 4500 in prior to help out with the gears...

than a couple actual box questions...

what are the ideal yr's to look for? do I want the later one for any upgrades it has and so I could short throw shifter it at some point if I wanted?

I do know about the 5th gear nut issue...

and can I just leave my current pedals and just swap out the hydraulics/slave?

Some quick cummins-nv4500 info, easiest/best route is the later model GM 4500, with the Cummins you will need to swap the input shafts as well as the bell housing, you can not do these things with an early 4500. You can use a 32spline round pattern 205 behind it or even a 241 if one is available.

Oh, current pedals will work (yours is hydro right), with the 4500/ Cummins swap I am running south bend clutch hydro stuff (big double disc in mine) with a bracket/ mount copied from Tennessee diesel conversions.

I talked with Ken @ Autoworld... (http://cumminsdieselrepowers.com/) and I believe it does move it back some...it requires the firewall (down low by the feet) to be massaged to accept the width of the Cummins Bellhousing mounting.

Luke(Demon44) and Josh (JT512) amongst others have had real world applications in their possession too.

I prob won't get to my install to late spring/early summer but I will document the changes when I do get to it....The Autoworld mounts are very nice pieces...a bit pricey, but they combine the best of the Poly mounts, safety locking clamshells, and factory type designs...

ok, cool.. thanks guys, that's the kinda stuff I wanted to know... loks like that'll all get done at once obviously..

it'll be the round 205 that's in Mutt that i'll use... and yes, Josh the current setup is hydro... just wasn't sure how far back into the system I need to go... firewall out? new ressy off the old pedal pushrod, hoses, slave?

i'll check that link Dave, thanks..

I'm just a bit confuddled.....

whats the difference between using a whole dodge package like your doing Dave, and running a late model GM unit like Josh mentioned? if the GM needs a bh and shaft, wouldn't it be easier to just find a wrecked dodge complete? or can I not bolt the 205 to the dodge setup?

Dodge used a 29 spline output, there is a 205 that bolts to it but they are $$$. Dave is running 2wd so its not an issue.

Also, even on the Dodge trans an upgraded/oversized input is a good idea so changing it out on a GM is kind of the same thing.
The hydro stuff is basically firewall out that you will change.

ok, that all makes more sense, thanks boys!

I'll have to obviously research it a bit more, but that's the road I'm headed down... wonder if I can just use the existing rear x-member and move it accordingly back...

oh, and to run the GM unit Josh, is that an AA adapter bellhousing I assume?

Nope, just a plain old Dodge part on the bell. The later GM and Dodge 4500's share the same pattern, its a bolt on deal. Even the inputs are a simple swap.

ok, one last one for the masses....

just so I know what box to keep an eye out for... I'm seeing there are 2 different 4500's, a regular, which I think is referred to as a LD, than the HD version... from my quick research apparently the only differences are a 1/8" larger input and output shaft on the HD, and something with the fifth gear and nut.. was that some attempt to fix the issue?

or is that the shaft swap I would be doing anyway? going to the larger shaft?

what yr range 4500 am I looking for? 95 and later? up to what yr?
