Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

wow, that blows, Pro Tools must be closed the whole week between x-mas and new yr's... just rang the phone off the hook.. you'd thinking they would have a machine with a message... we do that and we're just a stoopid marina... :dunno:

I'm betting they wont be open till next Monday knowing my luck... :angry1:

well, since the tube gods don't want me bending this week, I'll move on to the tie-downs... :p: :haha:

and to counteract the bad Monday news, I just found out Fazzio's price on the 1/4" 5052 alum plate is WAY better than I thought it was gonna be...

$248 a 4' x 8' sheet, I need 2.. about $200 less than I was planning on according to metaldepots site... yay! :woot:

gonna try to do that order ASAP....

What's the exact die you need and for bender? I have a friend in Jackson w/ a bender. I helped him bend up his exo-cage w/ it a couple years ago. I can see what unit he has and which dies.

it's a pro tools 105... and the size is 1.5" with 6" CLR... thanks, but don't sweat it, not worth the hassle for him and you, etc..

I'll just move the projects around a bit, always plenty to do... :doah: :haha:

boy, I could really use one of these right now...

wonder if I can source one locally tomorrow....

sweet... it looks like homo depot has some, I need to go there in the morn anyway...

yeah, in this day and age, it's kinda become an evil necessity for most... I try to give my local mom and pop hardware a fair amount of my biz, but occasionally I get stuck going to the depot..

they piss me off tho, used to get some smoking deals on grinding discs in there.. but now all they carry is that expensive diablo stuff...

tho, they are still my #1 source of mig wire, they carry the Lincoln superarc mig wire in big spools cheap..

just ordered a ton of rolocs on eghey... my consumable grinding/sanding/cutting stuff is pretty much gone... down to my last cutoff wheel, no rolocs, no flap wheels.....

stoked tho.. tons of work to do with the tiedowns.. gonna be busy the next couple days.. stay tuned for slutting... :pimp:

Can`t blame you for going there....if they got what you need and it`s cheep Sweet!

I just never had any luck getting what I want...and I just love asking some douche foreigner to help me out! Can they not get anyone in there that knows at least how to speak or somewhat understand English! And the ones that can are retarded too! :doah:

Sorry rant over. Lol! Love what you doing! Going to be Rad when your done! :waytogo:

next time I have a design idea, someone throw an intraweb rock at my head..... :haha:

ugggggh, working with this round rod takes forever... bending em is the easy part, it's the fishmouthing and fitting that s*cks donkey nuts...

the same one on the other side is close.. but I'm working on bending the 2 back angle ones now...

but what I'm DREADING is the uprights... the design calls for 30 :eek1: 2" high pieces..

I picked up a drill vice this morn and can use a 2" holesaw at the one end, but using a 7/8 or 1" at the other end is proving difficult... even the 2" is a slow process..

if I have to fishmouth em all by end, that'll bring the suck.... :(

What about just cutting a loose V in the top with a cut-off wheel or chop saw and then use a fairly thick weld bead - I know it likely goes against your perfectionist nature - but for these uprights, it may look the same as a nice fishmouth when finished. Maybe you should weld up a couple side-by-side to test it out?

I ended up doing a lot of those 3" type pieces on a lumber rack that I built last year for my partners rig. In all reality, by the time I made a couple and welded them in, I realized that a perfect cope was kinda a waste of time.

By the time you use some .030 and how fast you need to move it around such a small tube I said forget it. I ended up just laying into the flap wheel on the end of the small tube to give it just enough of a cope to stay. The gap it left on the sides was actually nice for welding.

Just a thought..

noted.... :D

decided to take a break from that being the weather was reasonable out this afternoon, and my center pin/u-bolts showed up...

so I put my zero rates in and moved the axle up 1.5"...

which in turn, made my driveshaft the perfect length...

100_1465_zps4b511fda.jpg

not real noticeable without the bed on, but there's the final rear axle spot... now I just gotta do the front..

100_1467_zps6d84d0e8.jpg

also did the last holes in the top of the frame, 2 on top of the winch mount... so the mount is currently those, than the inner plate catches those 4 back bolts...

100_1463_zpse1c78aa5.jpg

which means I can put the tubebed back on at any point in time now...

but I'm gonna leave it in the Lab™ till the tie-downs are done... at least... might as well work in a warm shop...

oh, and if I get another reasonable weather afternoon, my next projects outside will be to get the back shocks in and see about getting the back brake lines done..

than the only thing I'll need to run it is to put the fuel tank back in in the spring...

Speaking of fuel tanks, I've been wanting to share this pic with you after that fuel discussion took place earlier in this thread.

The died diesel is less expensive here and I've heard of a few folks getting nailed by the state troopers for running it in 1-tons. Car hauling folk mostly. The only way that I know of to avoid that ticket is to have a farm tag/plate.

Anyhow, I don't have a farm tag on the blazer or the durdge but I also don't plan on getting a ticket. I think I'll just hold on to this pic and the true claim that this helps provide lubricity that is lacking in the newer fuels. It just so happens to be... red.

:haha:

make sure to keep an empty qrt around... :waytogo:

on a tool/Lab™ note, wish I could spare/have $400 for tools right now.. I'd really like to get a torch setup and my argon guy has nice little Arco setups for 400.. cart, bought tanks (like 60 and 40), regs, hoses, torch...

saw em when I was getting the stooopid baby acetylene filled yesterday... and of course I killed the tiny oxy today, so I gotta go back tomorrow... :angry1:

just can't swing that now going on unenjoyment...

A good torch is invaluable, man. That reminds me.... There's a local guy here that is crazy good at coping with a plasma cutter. You need one of those too.[emoji11]

it's pretty rare that I actually need a torch, and in the past I've worked at marinas that had fullsize setups I could snag now and than... now we just have the stoopid carry around thing.. I've been meaning to buy one for yr's..

I've got plasma, I often use it to rough cope tube.. crazy long copes.. that wouldn't work on this stuff.. I actually hate using the plasma on anything but plate and sheet.. I find it beats up the tips when you use it as a torch chopping bolts, rivets, etc..

I have an idea I'm gonna try out tomorrow..

My big torch setup has been lying dormant for years. No sense in paying for gas when you can use the boss' up, right? I'm always using one for bearings & such. A big torch isn't usually necessary for installing but makes removing old bearings a breeze. It's just easier to be able to concentrate heat to one precise spot without overheating anything around it. If I weren't using company stuff, I'd have mine going! It's a must-have in my book.
