Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

gonna kinda prattle on here about build stuff, mainly to confirm it all in my brain... :haha:

I have kinda come up with a design dilemma.... well, not design, but logistics I suppose..

if you look at the drawing here, notate the 3 dayglo green x-tubes that run under the boxes over to the coffin.......

angledangle3_zps0690302e.jpg

the original plan was to add these, directly below the short verticals, right next to where the boxes would lay... than use flush-mount panel tabs to mount the boxes in 3 spots down each side...

I'm sure that would work ok..

but now that I have the outer piece with the 2 bends ready to weld in, I wanted to add these tubes prior, well, at the same time...

but after looking at it, I've decided there is a better way to do it for a just a couple pounds more.. (basically 60"s of tube..so that's under 10 lb's)

instead of running the 3 as planned.. I'm going to run 4 per side.. 2 for each box.. sitting in from each box edge like 3"s or so.. and mount the panel mount tabs on the outboard side of those tubes.. that way each box will sit on the full length of the tubes, as opposed to just the 6 mount tabs per box... make for easier install too...

but the somewhat issue with this decision is that I don't know how far "in" on the boxes they will want me bolting them.. so I don't know if the tubes need to be 2"s in from the edge, 4", etc...

so my solution is that I'm going to make the 4 tubes, fishmouth em, and leave them loose, slidable in there, while I weld-in the main outer tube and uprights, until I get the boxes and mounting points to finalize their location......

Laying the boxes on those tubes is a good move. Those boxes can get really heavy sitting on top of tabs trying to shear them off a tube, especially with bumps and rattles.

yeah, it was the logical improvement...

hopefully I'll have both sides in by the end of the day tomorrow...

even with the one side tacked, the look is really coming together...

the angle section in the back for the taillight really looks cool, where it tapers down to the mudflap point..... but I still need to figure out what I'm doing with the bend back there.. ideally, I'd like to bend the alum like that front corner.. but it's a bit more complex in that the panel is at 30 degrees...

I think if I figure a good method for bending the front.. than do a trial template with poster board to figure out the odd shape, I can do it..

it'll become obvious tomorrow night as to what I'm talking about..

:haha: thanks..... :D

on a sidenote.... figured out this morn after cutting all the pieces for both sides.. than looking at the remaining 12' or so of 1.5" I have left.. that I definitely am going to need another stick to get BOTH the lower boxes framed...

one side will eat that piece I have.. so at some point, I need to pick up another stick... but I probably wont worry about that for abit, as I can't do the ps lower battery box till I put the new fuel tank in and ditch the factory one..

well, the other side is on hold till sunday.. just ran out of mig wire... busy Saturday, so sunday morn is the earliest I can go get it...

Looks great as usual. Idea on moving it..... how about a temp dolly like you have/had under the k5 even with a slight tilt forward to clear header and up in the back so not to drag. Then you can roll out the doors, get in position pick with cherry picker and then back under with truck when time comes. Or something of that sort....

funny you guys bring that up.. :D

a dolley wont work, cuz it's too wide for the door, it had to come in on an angle....

which brings up Fubeca's point.... I don't know.... :haha:

I think it will, if it get's tilted more.... but I'm gonna do a bit of measuring to be sure... it'll go, the question is, does it need to get dragged out at a full-blown 45 degree angle...

it's gonna be tight... that said, I did pick it with the hoist yesterday, like I mentioned, it has to come in thru the c-hoop... but I think with the hoist taking some of the load, and a couple guys guiding/tipping it, it'll go...

all I care about is getting out the door... I'm not worried about getting it on the rig... which brings up another point.. Mutt is actually somewhat in the way of the door, even rolled forward into the bushes, we still had to kinda lift it over the pside 37's to get it in the door... so pushing Mutt totally out of the way may be very helpful when the time comes...

Looks good. Are the lower bars smaller just for asthetics? I see now why you bought the other dies, I wasn't paying enough attention before, I probably would of just used the same size tube.

You "gots to" plan ahead Paul. :waytogo: Buy two rolls of wire just one time, then the next time you run out you know to buy another, but you still have one left so it won't hold you up. Then you are always one roll ahead of the game.

So - I'm going to take one for the team - why did you make it too wide to go through a garage door? :D

thanks... :D

yeah, it was asthetics, combined with a 1/2arse attempt to keep the weight down.. I didn't want to run 2" on the bottom, ever since I thought this up.. I just felt it would look too bulky... if that's even feasible with such a monstrosity... :haha:

and with the, not built yet, lower boxes going in the 1.5" too, it just made that much more sense.. I think it looks WAY better than if it was 2"... granted a bit more work (keeping everything centered.. had the same deal with the 7/8" handrail over the 2" too), and the die purchase obviously..

I know, I know.. :haha: but I'm poor and a $50 spool usually last quite some time for me... I think this'll be the first spool I put on since starting the bed.. granted it was a pretty fresh 12 when I started iirc...

I actually get it at depot.. best price around on the super arc..

come on.... ;)

my garage door wasn't gonna dictate the width, it was the dually 37's... heck, I didn't even plan on bringing it inside........

if I made it fit the door, it wouldn't have covered the tires.. no bueno... it's not like Mutt was gonna get parked in the Lab™ .....

Get the bed to the angle that you need, take some scrap and tack on some down tubes, then bolt on some wheels. :waytogo:
