I'm dreading this cut.. :doah: just not sure if my plasma can handle it.. 1/4 it does ok, but it seems to struggle a bit with 3/8... than the time for grinding a good edge to it..

I think it's worth it to just sit there for an hr with the saw.. :doah: I'm sure it wont go quick, but I'd rather go slow with this than the slow sparkfest from abrasives... I don't care if it's wasted by the end of the cut...
 
Yeah I hear you. Abrasives dont work so good when it gets up in the 3/8 range. Ive tried before and it took me like an hour to rip two 8in pieces for my bumper mount. I said never again.

Why not just rip it with a torch and a guide clamped to it?
 
well, you know my torch situation, I probably have just enough gas in the small bottles to make that cut... but than I gotta go out and refill the bottles AGAIN for my boss..... plus, I just hate all that grinding... sick of friggin grinding! :haha:

I'd rather try my plasma and go mega slow...

I've got $1300 now.. so I could go tomorrow or tues. I'll see how the weather is... I should be able to get all the metal and those 2 blades...

We have used that brand of steel blades in the past but only on a chop saw for steel we also picked up a rage saw that now takes up in the corner of the shop. Ok saw, but advertised as more than it is.

I don't know that I would attempt that cut on 3/8 plate. When a blade like this comes apart it comes apart fast. And way more violently! Plasma would be better. Check at the yard you get the steel, they may have a shear that for a few bucks more can do it for you. Our supplier can shear 1/2" plate to within a knats a$$ and they charge like 5 bucks on to do it.
 
checked that already.. they only do that at their Glassboro place... 80 miles away, as opposed to 30...
 
tho, now that you brought that up and I checked the actual directions, that might be a better avenue...

for that $50 blade and the time I'm gonna have to put in to cut it, I may be better off just driving the extra distance.. wtf, I ain't working! :haha:

I'll call em tomorrow to make sure they can shear that and have the other things I'm looking for.. :waytogo:
 
yeah, I thought it was further than that... worth the extra drive, no doubt..

even if they want $50 to do the cut, which I doubt, I'd still rather do that than torture myself in the LAB™..

Glad you found a better way. A few extra hrs in the truck sounds way more relaxing than trying to cut that. :haha:
 
I just think its time for a bigger plasma:D If I wasnt 14.5 hrs away I'd lend ya mine lol

when i bought mine I couldnt think of a reason I needed one that went any bigger than 3/4" but it was only another few hundy for the 1 1/8" so what the hey right:rolleyes: they always say get the biggest /best you can afford when it comes to that type of tool:waytogo::haha:

I can't complain about my Parker.. other than the cost of consumables.. it could probably do it with fresh components and some time... I've beaten the snot out of that thing for about 6 yr's and it's always done me good.. for $400 sheckles.. most plasma's are $1000 to 2....


the other reason I like the idea of just having them chop it is the weight... a full 4 x 4 is almost 250 lb's... pretty awkward getting that out of the pickup and around the shop.. the 180 lb hunk will be tough enough! :doah: :haha:

forgot about them... maybe i'll call and see what they want for that 4 x 4 chopped.. doubt they have the alum tho so i'd still have to hit fazzio up.. but, it could save me some time/mileage....

Their prices are good. In fact I think they are just as good as Fazzios. I generally go there when Im just buying steel.
 
One of my favorite things to do is not check in on this thread for about a week and then get caught up all at once! Even in the lulls of the hands on fab work stuff, there is still so many ingenious ideas and interesting talk about stuff!
 
thanks.. I start to feel guilty with lot's of build theory, discussion and no updates.. it's all important stuff for me to vocalize/type, deciding light config, picking hardware, etc.. but I like to give you guys tangible results.. that's why I was so glad to get that day in outside finishing the shocks, lines...

tho I do apologize for dosing everyone with welding table stuff, I just didn't know where else to put it.. as soon as I get materials and can start a thread on it, I will...

boy, the weather looks horrible this week.. gonna be cold.. just need to be patient.. I may go do a steel order only from Arnolds during the week.. and go to Fazzio's later in the week for alum, a blade to cut it, and casters...
