Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

Just did my usual routine of checking in for the first time in a couple weeks to see tons of stuff getting done! That's usually my favorite thing to do. The reason is, as others have said, I love to follow along but never really have anything to add. I live everything you have done and love seeing EVERY step. Hell I wish you posted pics of every time you got a new piece of sand paper! I like seeing anything that is part of the process. Going to the store to get supplies and even sweeping up at the end of the day is all part of the process. The only thing that would make it better is if I was actually hour roommate and could hang out with you in person everyday! And I love LOVE the brainstorming chit chat and the random chit chat about music and stuff. Makes me feel like I'm hanging out with my buddies cause that's what we do. We work on stuff, and chat about what we're going to work on, and then chat about movies we haven't seen in a long time.

In other words, I love every single aspect of this build thread. All of it. I just like to enjoy it in binges like I do TV series on Netflix!

A little late to the party but the truck-lite ones chief brody mentioned are what I got from the local Napa. But I see you've got it handled!

how was the quality on them? maybe the LMC ones are just repackaged truck-lite ones..

You going to do anything to support the door when open? Seems like it would damage the hinge over time, the weight of it hanging there.

not planning to.... the doors are only 1/8" alum, they don't weigh anything and the hinges are pretty beefy...

I'm more worried about dropping heavy stuff on it going in and out of the box...

but i'll see how it works out... I could always add a cable strap or something if I think it's needed...

If you add a cable and make it so the door lays flat, it will give you a nice little tray area, too. Maybe good for sorting small parts or holding lug nuts while changing a tire.

cable strap isn't actually what I would run, just a phrase that conveys sense...

what I would run are marine ones that are pretty common.. that said, I can't find a pic of them... :doah: :haha:

they are basically 2 equal length ss arms, like 1/8 thick x 1/2" x whatever length... they are attached/pivoted at one end.. a middle "joint"... than the other 2 ends have pivotable mounts for securing to the box/door.....

when closed, they sit side by side, than become straight when opened to 90 degrees...

they also have a small detent at the middle when fully open they kind of "lock".. so to close it, you just give the middle a push in..

i'll try to remember to take some pics of some this week...

what that does for it is keeps the "stops" in a fixed position as the door opens and closes... as opposed to a cable/strap flappin around...

stripped part of the roof today, did all the bodywork and got 1/2 it in green... going to moms tomorrow to weed and mulch her beds/garden... so that's it for this weekend..

hopefully, weather pending, I'll have the roof finished next sunday... oh, the lights came in, they seem decent... gonna order bulbs this week...

on a LAB™ note... did some blast cab maintenance today.. cleaned it all out, loaded fresh Scat Blast in it and put new tear-off lens in it... :pimp:

Like the stops for the truck tailgates? (as opposed to the Blazer/Burb ones)

thanks man... :o

I think it's turning out pretty neat... the brain pic is finally turning into reality, and I'm liking it... :D

forgot to post a couple of the box interior.... it's actually quite a large space, being 30" deep or so.....

Are you going to seal those up - to make them water tight?

see below....

Are you going to try to seal that lower box? You know like a bead of silicone along the seams and/or a gasket on the door?

as with the rest of the fixed alum panels, they will get a dress bead on the exterior of black silicone... but the boxes will also get beads on the interior corners too..

all the doors, lower and upper, are set up to have a thin, soft weatherstrip on the door stop/lip to seal the doors... I'm waiting on installing all that till all the doors have been fabbed/finished...

still need to put the painted driprails back on, waiting for moulding tape to come in the morn... and I'll order some LED bulbs next week...

Truck looks awesome. What moulding tape are you using? I'm going to need some for my drip rails and some other stuff on my truck.
