Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

What about the kennel in the back of the Mutt?

for as tempted as I was to get all cwazy and gut the floor now, and build it so it would be ready for when the pooch got here, I thought it best to stay under control and not get involved in a huge project between now and feb..

cold weather, snow, yada.. throw in I have zero money for seats and materials...

it'll be my project for next summer... it'll be fairly extensive as usual... I'm figuring it'll be well over 100 hr's..... surprise, surprise.....:doah::haha:

hopefully I'll have 2 days of grinding/cutting/fabbing this weekend and actually have something of a bumper update... think my schedule is clear..

sad thing is, most of the labor in that project is at the very beginning.. once the uprights are made, the tube work will be easy peezy.....

Was needing to cut some thick steel (1") and you said you were using a parker plasma cutter. I know it would be rough, but would it come out cleaner than a torch? They're here in Phx so I could probably pick up local. Any other ideas on how to cut that?

don't think my parker would get thru 1", even stoopid slow.. it's not rated for that... I'm sure some of the bigger $$$$ hypertherm, etc will do it... it get's thru 3/8.. but it still leaves a fair amount of jagged edge.. less than a cutting torch, but enough to the point that it's not time effective to plasma, than grind.. I'm better off with a 5" cutoff wheel on the 3/8..

trying to get thru 1", a good cutting torch is probably the best bet.. that's some thick stuff... thus why I decided to do the 3/8, 3/16, 3/8 lam sammich...

cummins guys.....

how is a 2wd NV4500 swapped to a 4wd setup? I'm seeing lot's of 6BT's with 2wd 4500's behind them.. is it a waste or something worth considering? just a tailpiece and output shaft or something? figuring you would tear it down for an inspection/5th gear nut/rebuild what's needed gig anyway...

What do you need for a front shaft? Got any measurements?

basically just a stock replacement, but longer... i'll have to break out a tape measure..

For what it's worth, I'm going to be pulling a NV4500 out of my blazer this winter. It makes noise in 5th gear and it's an early GM version (with the lower 1st gear) but if you're interested I can let you know when I pull it.

thanks... :D was really just kinda curious what it takes to make the 2wd version into 4wd.. the 5th gear issue is pretty well documented... I'm casually shopping 6BT's these days... and since everyone thinks they are gold, if I can get one with a 4500 thrown in instead of an auto, I figure I'm one step ahead of the game.. but the majority I'm seeing are out of 2wd rigs..

rain day, going down to grind steel now...
