Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

tinted the back window with 2.5 limo tint... I was gonna leave the center sliders with a mild tint, but it looked kind of stoopid.. right now I'm determining if I can use the back window at all in the center... the upper 1/2 is already blocked from the spare.. basically you can see right above the tubegate... and now with the limo tint, it's even more questionable...

waiting on another sticker or 2, and I'm gonna redo the back window totally.. the real question is whether i'll do the center windows too... I have plenty of neat, eclectic sticker stuff to do every inch.. just wanna be semi-non-circus-y with it...

the current, right side rendition...

got a pretty good plan I think for the ds, when my new Zombie Squad get's here...

I also have cool, original ones for the center 2 sliders... that's kinda up in the air at this point.... I really like how it looks with the centers just dark... but I'm gonna try it and see if it looks too crazy... can always blade it off if I don't dig it.......

I'm trying to give it some variety and humor... the skate stuff is for me.... anyone in traffic that get's those, props...

hadn't thought of that, not at this point... tho that would be cool, one mounted up on the spare tire pointed down at an angle.. maybe once I start finalizing the dash/interior stuff, i'll add that.. it's definitely something that would be a life-saver for backing up to a gooseneck...

My favorite way to integrate this into the interior is the ones that have the screen IN the mirror.

The 2014 suburban we have on site is like that. Upgrading to the autodim mirror, with temp sensor, is badass in itself. I put one without the screen in my burb.

Gentex makes 90% of the factory rear view mirrors on the market, and you can buy them used cheap on ebay. Add a new factory wiring plug, temp sensor, and cheap backup camera, and you're good to go. I bet you could pull the whole deal off under $200, and have no hokey monitor to be found.....

EDIT: or, skip factory, and go cheap http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-3-Inch-TF...422231?hash=item4d23484b57:g:hpkAAOxyi-ZTbZmY

I like that idea... cuz at this point, the rear view will basically be used to look at Kai.... :haha:

can't wait to get my new Zombie Squad in from Scott.... in a much better, closer-to Ryoken red... couple other neat ones for that side too...

I want that Santa Cruz sticker!

Also like the Independent sticker too...

I got that Indy one cuz the orange was relatively close.. that SC was actually red when I put it on... it's going away from that corner. may put a replacement somewhere else.... got a specific one in mind for the lower left... the Sims is going away too...

all these are usually dirt cheap on eghey... like $2, 3 a sticker usually... some of the shep ones where like $5, 6...

the zombie will just get shifted right a tad.. speaking of, Scott JUST informed me it's on the way..

Be curious to see how close the color comes.

thanks mang....

I have high hopes that it'll be the best orange/red yet on a decal to match the RR... just a chip, but it's red/orange %'s look pretty good..

if it turns out good, i'll redo the windshield in a couple months...

The cameras are wireless now, damn.

I got a wired kit from Rockauto, new mirror with the monitor built-in and a camera. It actually has two inputs, so I hooked the backup camera up to the reverse switch, and then a front camera to a manual switch.

Some details in my build thread @ https://ck5.com/forums/threads/74-k...o-why-you-do-that.209791/page-24#post-3558112

If the kits really are that cheap, do it do it do it. You can't rely on the camera, of course, but it's extra peace of mind, especially with a longer wheelbase.

well, I just realized, I really need to do something... with the angled bed it's tough to rely on side mirrors... I may do the center stickers, trying to leave a 3" high viewing area so I can see the tubegate between the stickers.. than pull the limo tint off and redo it in a more standard tint... with all the stickers, you may not notice the lighter tint.... or even possibly just a 3" lighter section in the viewing portal.......

I'll still do a camera down the road... but I want to try and incorporate something of a "mechanical" fix to the issue in addition as I'm working thru this...... even if I decide I don't like the stickers on the center 2, and blade them off.. i'll have to do something about the limo tint.. it's just too dark to see thru decently most of the time... especially in the mirror.. turning around and looking, it's not too horrible on a bright day....

the stoopid thing about all this, is I'm really gonna probably need to do some sort of window guard on the back.. really, it needs to be inside.. otherwise Kai could easily just scratch the sh*t out of any tint.. would still need to get the center sliders open for circulation sometimes too... but also any screen I do, may also hinder this vision deal... tho I'm thinking if I maintain the "vertical" bar thinking I plan for the sides and wall, it wouldn't hinder vision too bad....

here you can see my view... sliders open a bit to show... the upper 2/3 is useless... as long as I can see the tiedown on the tubegate and a bit above that, I'm good...

Yeah...visibility is limited enough that I wouldn't consider that safe without good side mirrors. And kinda sketchy with it (though it's not much worse than my K10 with side boards).

If you want a mechanical solution, you could cheat with a fresnal lens (like RV rear windows have).

yup, I'm a dullard.... had to go look that one up!! :haha:

yeah, no way I'm going back to those big giant tow mirrors... I just have to realize the end of the tube I see down the sides has another foot behind it... heck, I should just buy one of the cheap camera's now and play with it... could always upgrade it later.. and I could actually fart around with that while I'm home with Kai now...

FWIW, here is what I can see through my rear windshield. It's enough to tell what's behind me, but I wouldn't call it great visibility. Side mirrors are heavily used on that rig.

Looks like they're dirt cheap if you wanna play around with one. :dunno:

Go for it. The camera seems like a good way to solve this problem (even if it doesn't feel quite right in this era of truck).

yup, exactly... that's kinda what I'll have going on.. and also keep in mind, you can kinda see thru the side areas, etc..

I think the fact I may be able to mount the camera at a downward angle from the spare may prove to work VERY well.. as opposed to right on the plate in the back...
