Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

the non-black is all 316..... luv getting the thugged hardware whenever i can tho.. ;)

it's conceivable that i could have all 3 of these drawer assemblies, done next weekend and ready for install.. coated, magnet, dividers and assembled ready for install... just gotta nut up and sand out the last box and divider... the rest is easy peezy...

that may time out well with getting panel mounts from Kert for the bellys if the weather stays reasonable......

the insanity that is my life.....

hopefully by monday all 3 will be ready to be coated... the magnet should be here mon/tues... once the #2 and 3 drawers and boxes are sharkhided..... I'll do the magnet in the bottom (but lets make it look right and protect it first :screwy:)

than I'll do a final fit/shave on the dividers, coat them, install... than the 2 dividers will get tacked at a couple unseen spots.. touch em up... assemble with mostly new hardware after getting the handles/springs in paint... drink bourbon till Martha Stewart looks good...

Crazy amount of work, going to be and look really good.

thanks..

off the top of the head, I figure each box remodel, start to finish are about 60 hr's.... :doah: luckily the 4th new box will prolly be about 15.. when I get to it..

one nice thing i get to easily do during the monotony is put a nice smooth chamfered edge to the drawer tops, dividers, etc with the 220 block...

apparently I decided it was smart to leave the worst drawer for last... :doah: you can see in that pic the damage i have to leave at this point around the side hole from where the star washer created corrosion... i got the majority out on the other drawers..

but that was part of the hardware deal.. just gonna swap out the stars for 3/4" flats to hide it...

ordered a small hunk of the red foam to see how it is... probably gonna do the top "pad" in the thick black Kaizen...

thanks... they have some "charcoal" PE that might be good as a top piece, as it's not layered apparently, like the Kaizen... https://www.foambymail.com/PE2-_1/polyethylene-foam-sheets-2-2lb.html it looks pretty black.. they have 1.7 and 2.2 lb, which i like... too bad they only have pink and blue for colors...

as soon as the drawers are coated, magnet and dividers, I'm gonna start laying out some tools and such to see what kind of open space i have on top of them.. to decide if i want the top layer to be 1", 1.5, 2", etc... than i'll order something... i'll have a small hunk of red to see if i like the cutout idea too.......

well, tho i have a little hunk of the other red coming to check out, i think this would be what i want for the lower red cutout level.. i think it would need to be a minimum of 1" thick... than maybe a 1/4" one of black lammed on top.. have to see how stuff lays in there to see how thick i think it should be....

from the foam factory.. we'll see if i go that route and pop for it....

mmmm, Ryoken red.... it would be sooo trick looking......

not overly impressed with the magnet so far... it's beefy, seems nice and thick.. but it really doesn't seem to have much holding power... gonna do the first drawer tonight... i may HAVE to do a cut out now...

Quick thought on the magnet,... Will it have enough pull to stick random steel crap to the bottom of the drawers? Like filings and stuff. Maybe I'm over thinking it lol.

it definitely would, hadn't thought of that.. but i don't expect to be doing all kinds of fab work on/in/around the rig... it is a marine service rig after all...

flat stuff sticks like a mofo in there.. but it's easy for the weight of a tool to overcome the magnet if it has minimal contact with it... like a hammer or ratchet... it's gonna stay no matter what tho.. a good underlay no matter what i do down the road with foam..

so, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna run my sockets in the laydown trays..... i have a 1/2" green and red 1/4 for mockup, but I think I'll just pop for the 3 sizes new, in black for SAE and Metric...

I'm also getting ready to pop on the cutout stuff.. it's definitely gonna happen in 2 drawers to some extent.... I'm also going to be doing 2 tool layers in the majority of those compartments..

it's going to be magnet, 1" red, with a 3/8 black lammed to the top for the bottom layer...

than on top of that, I'm going to make removable foam trays.... black lower layer, red, black... but i'm also going to lam that to an alum piece the size of the compartment, so it's nice and stiff when pulled out... than a seperate black as a top cushion... the drawers are 5" deep, so I think it should work real well..

the 2 ps drawers will be tool cases and the other will be parts/fasteners..

bloody again.... ;)

but 200 hr's later, the sanding on the 3 boxes is fuggin done... :saweet: :woot: :saweet: :woot: :doah: :woot: :haha:

tomorrow I'll get the first coat of Sharkhide on the rest of the alum... sat, i'll finish the coating and paint the black stuff...

so sunday I should be installing the rest of the magnet, dividers (tack em in) and assemble the drawers with the new hardware and these 500 lb rated puppies...

Wow! so nice

thanks man... not gonna worry too much about the cutout's, etc now... I am gonna get some gray indoor/outdoor in that 4 compartment one for the tool cases.... the hand tool ones, I'm not gonna worry about till I'm driving the rig some and figure out what I need, etc...

next mission is going to be to pull the big panels off to come in for a, oh god, more wetsanding :doah:and sharkhide on the bottom.... then I'll be able to work on the bellypan fab stuff without worry of hurting them, as weather permits.... once Kert gets my panel tabs done, *coughnudgewinkhintcough* ;)
