Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

slowly, but surely plodding thru my physical trainwreck, 1 doc and test at a time...... still a bunch coming up, but... good news today is it doesn't "appear" I have a brain tumor, etc.. ;)

tho blood work, scans, etc are still coming... apparently where the muscles attach to the back of my skull are all fugged up... ridiculously tight he said... my wrecked shoulder certainly isn't helping the situation... and my job is horrible for it... putting me on relaxers and some PT to help it for now... now I really need to get the shoulder looked at I suppose. headaches for weeks on end is pretty debilitating...

anyway... lower box is fully welded.. just need to smooth the lower joints now... hoping for a good update next sunday...

I will just follow that up with... I walked out of that office today pretty ecstatic about what he told me. albeit, I'm fugged up. :haha:

ortho, muscle, ligaments, stitches, etc are things I'm pretty used to dealing with.. #vertskatinFTW

if it ain't killin me, I can handle it.. :deal:

Rob-like tumors? that chit even scares a masochist like me...

lower is fully smoothed thru 60...

I have not broken the edges yet...

I'm actually considering picking up the latest buzz tool on utube these days.. while neat, i'm HIGHLY suspect of the blade durability...

tho i would have no prob getting good results with a sander like usual, if there was ever a job that screamed for something like that, it's this...

I would prolly still follow up with a sander real quick to soften em a bit.. but this would give a nice consistent cut to start...

next step is to cut and fit the new top.... than it's mockup in Mutt time.....

I've seen the guy on Fireball Tool using a chamfer tool like that and it looked pretty neat.

said screw it and popped for it... got a good deal with reward points.. we'll see how it holds up... review coming...

apparently my hydro clutch kit and tank pick up are on the way too....

feel bad, my buds 85 dually with a 496 he just built for it, had some fresh edelbrock lifters fail and go thru out the mill...

should get a 1/2 day in sat and sun.. hoping to fit up a new top on sat and get Mutt fired up and repositioned.. sunday, mock up the top/fills...

just a FTR... as an affirmation to us ole fugs.. ;)

in my case, boats bring the absolute suck.. i don't know... dozer, crane guys may have it worse, but man, my gig is just absolutely brutal physically.. slogging around 175 lb Bravo's, BB heads and stoopid marine exh manifolds that are 70 lbs.. I kind of chuckle at my body guy friends that cry...

doing handstands while doing top ends, pumps, etc, is just well, a young grunts game... I remember the days when I was THE horse.. need a snotty mofo to hump 8D's, dizzle heads, etc? bring it...

I'm a shell... living on my wisdom... and, moving blankets... :doah:

I literally crawl in the door every night.. Kai is moderately considerate of my plight... ;) moderately...

that said.. expect a mofo-ing update sunday.... :deal: I WILL not be denied Mutt's glory... :woot:

Tennessee Dizzle kit in da house.. thanks Stacy...

got a new top made today... need to tune it down a bit for welding, but it's fine for mockup....

hopefully I can get the rigs all shuffled around tomorrow at a minimum..

not sure how far I'll get, gonna stop by my buds with the bad 496 to see what the carnage was, and if I can help...

pulled the doghouse off and realized I couldn't go any further... I never enlarged the locator holes on the frame from 1/4" to 3/8*".. my right angle drill is at the marina.. plus I forgot my impact for the spare.. did wash all the winter debris off....

but I did get to do a quickie test with the tazmanian router.... works as intended, not the smoothest cut, you'd definitely wanna soften it.. but I'll play with it at various depths and techniques more later...

Mutt ready for mock up... excuse the crud...

interesting potential issue I hadn't of thought about till now... gonna be interesting installing this tank when done... that side to side tube that the spare carrier is mounted to, is 23" ish above the deck tubes..

full

the tank has 20" high sidewalls... won't be an issue for mockup, but when i go to install the done tank, it'll be a bit of an angle dangle to get it in below that tube with the 2 fills sticking up..... and no, I'm not pulling the bed... ;)

it will also pose some issues logistically installing.. doubt I can manage this with the engine hoist fully..... I'll be able to put it on the deck, but don't think i'll have the reach to drop it in the hole... unless I do some creative boom mod kinda deal...

my kingdom to have it at the marina and use the Lull..... :doah:

I do actually have an idea for using Mutt's rear winch to accomplish it tho.... :deal: :pimp1:

pickup for the tank, with the weld-in bung..... all 1/2" NPT...

*note the 1 wk old 40 grit DA rust on the fresh top*

on a review, aside.. not happy with the "standardish" weatherstripping I ran on the doghouse... it was good early on, but after a couple yrs of never being apart, it did some separating when I pried the top off... pried being the proper term...

it was actually adhesived to the bottom, not the top iirc...

I'll be retro-fitting it with a similar neoprene rubber to combat that down the line... #McBibleFTW

gotta slaughter boats all day sat, but I'm hoping to get a full-ish day in sunday for mockup...

next sunday I kind of need to get to a fUrd maintenance with an earl change and meat rotation...

just some musings for the, 9 in the gallery...

full boat slaughter today, pulling tricks out of my butt all day.... muscle relaxers are saving my arse currently... my neck and shoulder are trainwrecks... the meds help the neck/headaches at least.. shoulder i'm trying to hang in till the fall...

and I have a ton to do on my day off in the morn, food shopping, yard work, pool, neers... but the plan is, to at a minimum, get the tanks frame bolted to the rigs frame... need to enlarge the rail holes.. just need to throw a couple in tho, as the tank frame will have to come back out for strap tabs anyway...

maybe sling the tank in place.. not sure I'd have time to get it back out tho.. but if I feel I can give it some decent protection for a few days, I may go for that...

on a fab aside... just kind of going thru some shots tonight....... and am really kind of proud with how some of Mutts shots have come out over the yrs.. sure, I'm proud of the rig I spend 1/2 my life building my insanity..... but I'm amazed my idjit arse could get a few "instagram-my" kinda pics.. :haha: the black/white deal definitely helps.... hopefully a few are preserved for, and may rev, future generations of builders/fabbers... :saweet: while not everyone's cup O' tea, I think some shots turned out pretty epic..

feel free to ignore the whore.......

just me, trying to motivate myself some... life fights the build at every turn... :dunno:

obviously I'll be changing out the hardware.. gonna do flanged bolts with pinch locks...

being momma day next week, may not be back at it for a couple weeks here..

catharsis, forgive me..... :o

doing everything I can to not work sat.. it'll be the only day I can get for Mutt mockup with sunday a momma no go... if I do get dragged in to he!!, I'll blow out at noon no doubt...

i don't care if it pours all day friday, I'm working.. and fug the nightmares... we are sooooo behind, fug it... :doah: even if everything goes smooth as he!!, we fall behind these days with our workload since the plandemic..

we have basically 5 guys doing 250 slips worth of boat labor work. and 1 office guy, well, now 2..... most places would have over double the employees we run... if we all weren't so damn efficient it would be a slaughter... even than, we farm out more and more work.. the yard guys can't keep up with the detailing... we've got 3 different detailers coming in to supplement... God forbid something goes sideways, and you can bet it happens a few times a week between the 3 of us spinning wrenches.. I'm a physical trainwreck hobbling from boat to boat, up and down ladders, yada...

on a :haha: moment.... in the boat biz, we often refer to it as "the year of x", toilets, holding tanks, mills, fuel tanks, etc, etc.... stuff comes in batches... this year??? a new one for me... snapped plugs... i've never had it happen to me.. tho i always remembered horror stories as a young hotrodder about it.. keep in mind as a marine mechanic, i literally do over a hundy V-8 sets of, often rusty, plugs a yr, easy.... it's why i'm anal about proper threading, killa sockets, etc.. tho, I don't snot them up... just proper maintenance intervals IMO...

well, Rog snapped one coming out on an old, new boat to us, and called me in last week.. but i lucked out and the whole insulator and electrode came out with the hex for him.. a few heat soak/quenches and a good twist socket shot brought the sleeve out for me....

well, yesterday, Rog pulls up in his scooter to the boat I was working on and says "watch it, they come in 3's" with a smirk... a marine surveyor on B dock had just snapped one off in a mill..... insulator and electrode STILL in it.. your fugged dude.. that head is coming off... yeah, I got time for that.. :doah:

we could definitely use another full function, self sufficient mechanic, and a couple consistent young yard grunts easily...

we are so busy, i don't do any glass/gel work anymore... :( we farm it out to a dude... it was kind of my "cake" work, standing there DA-ing or wetsanding means your not getting stabbed in a bilge.. :dunno:

I need more $$$$$ for my souls justice... :deal:

I almost never bust out a ratchet after I got one of those. I wonder if they make a 1/2” version.

i have been constempating the 1/4" actually for daintier work.. ;) I hadn't used one since my collision shop days with my 3/8 IR air one... I don't think they do 1/2 in ratchets.. in ANY variation now that I think about it. air either...

I think that’s a “safety limit” thing so no idiot is trying to spin on something that needs 100+ torque units with their 3/8” drive power ratchet.
