Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

so... after some life..... trying to gear up for putting the top of the tank together...

an order from Tanksinc.com showed today.... 1/2" NPT weld-in bungs, T-bolts for the stainless holddowns I'm building.... and a threaded, weld-in bung for the "no moving parts" fuel sender for an 18" tank.....

props to tanksinc, they had the oddball sender size i needed on the shelf, and my order showed in like 3, 4 days...

you may also notice the fills there, out of the blast cab... and a roll of dark green tape... need to prep them for my pool bud to powdercoat em...

the weekend work will be starting to get the top prepped... need to finish smoothing the wall cutouts for the fills...

first time I've had the ole Parker Metalworking fireaxe out in a while! :doah: :haha:

but I also need to start drilling/fitting the 2 fills, the bungs, sender, etc... so I'm sure I'll need a couple new holesaws... also the slits for the wall plug welds, which I'm also looking to tie into the lifting hook...

I have a bit of time here, so I also need to see about getting a small roll of SS wire for the Miller.. and gasp! maybe even the proper trimix... I doubt that tho, probably run me $200 to get into another bottle these days...

I just need to plug weld the end, "fold over the T-bolt" sections... I could even weld it in steel and just douche the ends in rattlecan prolly if need be...

need to price out some 2" ss strip at McBible... that's gonna be $50 all day +shipping.. :deal: :haha:

Is that a dead bird stuck up next to the frame?

:haha:

took me about 4 seconds to realize what it was...... it's what I/we call, an "itchy ball" ? they are the spiked deBil offspring of many of my trees.. musta got flung up by the tires...

it's an annual battle I undertake.... :deal: my yard is NOT barefoot friendly! :haha: them, and the damn holley trees..

drain bung done...

also finished smoothing the baffle wall cutouts...

tomorrow I start working on the top plate after shootin pool.. I expect that to take a couple weekends of fit up before burning in......

McBible is sending the vent bung and holesaw on weds..... hopefully next weekend I can get it finished, weld slits cut and fitted...........

I would say "start burning the top in".... but I'm gonna wanna spend a bit of time here finalizing the interior wall finish first.....

grrrrrrrr :angry1: sooooo annoyed with myself...

accidently double ordered that last McBible order.. $125 wasted...

I'll try to find uses for the strip steel, rubber strips and bung.... but it's annoying at a time where I'm trying desperately to get caught up......

McMaster actually has an excellent return policy, just send it back if you messed up.

in this case, I don't think it's worth it.. cuz of the strip steel.. they are the big 6' tubes... smaller stuff, sure... by the time I pay the $28, etc for that, that I won't get back, understandably.... it wont be worth it...

2" x 1/8 strip steel is pretty handy to have around.. I'm sure I'll figure a use for it at some point...

on a build aside.. I'm already eyeing the point when this tank will be painted/done and installed... need to figure the next "no funds" avenue...

I'm actually considering filling it and just run NPT plugs for the return/feed.... till I get it actually functional... oooof, 55 gals of dizzle.. that'll sting!!!! :doah: :haha:

i'll try to sneak in some hrs after torture this week to finalize the walls... want to find a good wire wheel to burnish the welds, get a real solid 320 sand, if not 400 on the flats.... possibly a final compound/wheel...

but plans are to burn it in next week... get to the exterior, straps, etc...

need to stop and get a qrt of epoxy and some Nason or Imron depending on what hardeners i have kicking around...

soooo... after a week of injuries, urgent care, etc, I really killed it this week.. miraculously, my knee responded very well... plowed thru 4 HOT days out in the dead back lot with the waukee 18v fan to save me...... :haha:

got my boat in the water fri at 4 pm.. fired the one mill up.. all good.. other bat was stone dead... 1/4 to 5? i'm outta here.... plus my boss stil had to go in and install all the seats, etc.. that almost kilz'd me... :haha:

anyway.. fug boats.

I managed 3 hrs or so today prepping the box for ceiling install... ran out of DA paper... but considering it sat a month, got it back on track...

it needs quite a bit more in wall prep for final welding, to let me sleep at night... but slits have been chamfered/prepped, got all my clamps ready...

soooo.. here is the current Ryo train of thought...

I'm gonna bring all the interior surfaces to prolly 600.. most has been thru 320 already.. i have a roll of 4 and 600 in the LAB™.. what i ran out of was the rough prep 180.. and while all the weld joints are damn clean and pretty burnished, got a different, interesting wire wheel coming too, just to see if it's a better mechanical approach for the joints... so far a big burly twist knot cup brush on the 4 1/2" s have worked pretty good.. albeit, aggressive, and " I want to kill you".....

the cranium plan at this point is to make a bomb... :haha:

I'm gonna bring everything as shiny, and smooth, thru 600 dry as I can without wetsanding.. the DA and palm sander seem to be fitting the bill currently.. maybe a bit of WD40/600g in the corners if needed.....

than comes the interesting part.. gonna go in and burn/wheel it with some nasty lacquer compound as best I can with the rotary...

but what makes this different than anything I've done before is.. my removal of the compound residue/splatter.. it will be with WD40 soaked rags.. not wax/water, etc.. till clean and dry as possible.....

than i'll wipe down the top 3, 4" of the walls with thinner.., where I'll be welding too...

always like a benchmark order coming in... hopefully by fri and get a good day in sat...

I figure when it's painted, and ready for install, I can swirl a qrt WD40 in it, and drain... or yeah, go right to dizzle if i can afford it..:screwy:

also, there was a small miscalculation on my part pertaining to the holddown straps, no big, I'll go over it later...

as an aside.. it's amazing how much better utilization of space it is with the 2 drivers being angled next to the house now .. front to back, the furd would nearly stick out in the street... keeps me from having to park the furd on the grass...

hope to get a good day in this weekend.. buffed/prepped for top welding and possible the first stitches, etc...

*edit* man, that furd needs a bit stouter stance... :(
