Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

Top fits like a glove...no issues...I don't have seals on the top of the windshield frame and I didn't pull it tight, but the grooves fit nicely. :woot:

Another long day....but as Chief Brody said while trying to tie the sheep shank...."I got it!"...photos to come after I get clean

This is as good as I can get it...I'm calling it done...and moving on to primer
that "wet" spot is a spot of filler that I just finished and sprayed over...

Looks fantastic man!!!

Thanks! Fixing involved drilling out 3 or 4 of the spot welds in the quarter at the jamb...wrapping a chain around a big tree...attaching a come-a-long and an 8000LB tow strap attached to a 4x4 that was secured to the B Pillar...

It was not a fun day....had to loosen up the door and start all over...lots of repetition today....

Looks like the hard work paid off though! Well done man. You're really gonna get cruising on this thing now!

Yes...after I prime the passenger side...I need to clean up the floorboards from all my mess and resand them and prime them again...

Then, I will be ready to paint the firewall and frame and it will be ready for the drivetrain...I can't believe I am getting this close to having the engine back in!!!

I'm gonna need some advice on painting the firewall and frame...I thought I was there a long time ago but I was getting ahead of myself...now it's for real...:woot:

Great job! This thing is probably going to be nicer than when it rolled off the assembly line. I don't think I've ever seen an original square body with good fender/door/quarter gaps!
Chief, you have inspired me. Look what the UPS man delivered this past week!!!

If I was done with my welder I would sell it to you...but I am not...while talking about welders...all my gas leaked out...don't know how...I've left the valve open before and it didn't...

Who did you buy those parts from? My old quarters had those put on...on the rear bottom...he used glue...they were on there good...he did a decent job on those...

How much is a good pellet rifle with a scope?

A robin has built it's nest in the tree right above where I work on the rig...it has taken to crapping on it every time I am working on it...

I picked them up from LMC, I also picked up a passenger side door skin. The previous owner had scraped the passenger door on his garage door and put one heck of a crease in the door. The pieces were cheap, and I figure if I screw up, I can always go the full quarter route later on down the road. I've always wanted to get into restorations, and already have a sandblaster, a decent air compressor, and tools. I have always wanted to learn how to weld, and figure the blazer would be a great first project vehicle to experiment on, because it will always be a functional vehicle for my family and doesn't need to be a show car. I really appreciate your hard work and dedication in this thread, and have truly enjoyed reading all the posts and learning so much from others. I always look forward to your weekend updates of progress.

Just the skin, my door is in good shape other than the crease and some rust where the plastic body trim was glued onto my door. If it didn't have rust, I would just fix the crease, but the rust under that stretch of trim had really thinned the metal in spots...

The door skin unfortunately arrived with a few dings and scratches. After looking at it carefully, I decided the damage won't affect my repair thankfully.

That is the norm instead of the exception...I've yet to receive any sheet metal in the mail that hasn't been dented or worse...
Seems like they all require additional bodywork...at least it's bodywork to fix a dent and not rust...

Yeah, it's sad to say I wasn't surprised by the damage, but it is a bit rediculous. At first glance my wife and I thought the new door skin was ruined. It took me a bit to figure out a way that I could salvage it. I'd really love to do the entire quarters, but we just don't have the money right now. All the pieces I bought (passenger door skin, both wheel arches, and and both rear quarter bottom panels that fit just behind the rear tires below the tail lights) were $179 shipped. I have to say the wheel arches and lower rear quarter patches were dead on, they layed on top of my original quarters perfectly. The door skin is a bit off, but usable.

Anything big and flat doesn't stand a chance...unless it is shipped in a wooden crate.

I have a '91 Blazer. I bought it 7 years ago to replace my '86 C10 pickup when we found out baby #2 was on the way. I originally didn't intend on keeping it long, but we found we really liked it, especially that you could remove the hard top. My kids love cruising around with the soft top. I had a friend replace the rockers a few years back, and he bailed out on completing the job all the way to paint. The majority of shops around me won't even touch a truck like mine, except for Maaco, and I have to much invested in my truck to go that route. My rust really isn't that bad, a couple of bubbles toward the back of the wheel arches, but I figure when I start sand blasting I may find more damage so I figured I'd order the patch panels, and if I have to I'll do the full quarters...

OK...whole thing is in primer....now what?

I haven't blocked the whole thing yet...I ran out of sandpaper and primer...I just need enough to do spot priming now...do they sell Nason by the quart?

So what do I do next? Do I start blocking the whole thing yet?

When do I paint the black parts like the frame?

When do I paint the firewall?
