Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

My thought was on the Chromabase Premier...because it dries much quicker or you can make it dry quicker and if I shoot this in less than perfect conditions quick drying might be an asset?

Also, since my primer is buff, nearly the same color as the paint, the covering power of the Premier would almost certainly allow me to get full coverage with a minimum film thickness????:dunno:

you might save a bit of paint, but really you want to do a certain amount of coats/mills no matter what..

I will say, I REALLY like the catalyzed base.. regular chroma dries fast as he!! to begin with... it's like a lacquer, but even faster... we'd be wetsanding base in 20 minutes...

but the premier does cover nice, and yes, the catalyzed base SHOULD be tougher than the chroma or nason... it wouldn't stop me from shooting a noncatalyzed in a sec.. but if available, and I was feeling randy, nice product....

He said the color code #527 was just so old that they didn't translate it across to new stuff...he said they could and probably will...but they don't have to...in which case you have to go for a "close matching color" that they already have...I'm not doing that...

After 1200 hours of work (much of it duplicated while learning) and more to go I think I want to put something nice on top of it...

I just need to know what I am going to buy and start saving for it now...I think the Premier is a little over $300?
I think it mixes 1:1 so a gallon should do it...right?

And I also will have the big white panels for the two-tone original look..

right.. that's what I always found great about Glasurit.. when i was in collision they where head and shoulders above all the other companies with getting stuff into base formula's..

that's why they where killing the body shop biz for a while, and still are big... otherwise ya had to convert single stage.. and yeah, it works, but it was ghey.. true base was/is WAY better to spray..

right, you use basemaker reducer and a tiny amount of catalyst... I shot the clear too, I like it, good body and it buffs well...

a gallon should be fine... couple qrts of white or something...

That's the other thing....the DuPont site only shows water based...not solvent based...hope they still have it

i don't know which is the water based.. i shot a bit of it 20 yrs ago, wasn't a fan... my paint guy knows not to offer me such things....

I'm sure it's improved, but I'm the guy that's want zinc chromate by the 5 gallon pail with scoops of zinc in it.... :haha:

For the record, the correct paint color code is "537"

537 is the GM code for 527 + 521 (2567 + 2185)

That's "Yellow Gold" with "Frost White" stripe GM 1974 Commercial Colors

Went to Glasurit Dealer today....went to Dupont Dealer today

No go on either for the factory color in the premium paints Glasurit or Chroma anything.

At the Glasurit Dealer, he can only get the factory color in a two stage in this brand:
LIMCO SPBT-1 LIMCO Supreme Plus BaseCoat $105.08/gal

Dupont Dealer, has oem color in Nason...to get Chroma Base it would be a colormatch of a dry Nason swatch...
NASON FUL-THANE BC/CC 5500 $227.70/gal

OK..get ready to pull to your shorts back up....

ChromaBase $600.00/gal
Premiere $699.00/gal

Also..maybe on a good note...DuPont Dealer says that the ChromaClear went to a new formula....when it went to a new formula they didn't stop making the old formula...they replaced the NASON formula with the old ChromaClear

SO..he showed me a gallon of NASON High Solids 465-00

He said that was the same thing that used to be ChromaClear 400 (i think the number is right)
Said it's the same thing but instantly dropped $200 in price when the NASON label went on...:dunno::dunno::dunno:

Maybe it's true?

Holy shat!!!!

Hopefully that last bit is true for you....save you SOME cash. Paint sure is 'spensive though!!!

So what route do you think your going to take?

waiting to hear what Ryoken says...

Dupont dealer said that I have the best case scenario to use NASON and have a very good outcome.
Paint color is a solid
It is a light color
The base is going over a light color primer
I am painting the entire vehicle, not just a fender

He said he wouldn't hesitate to use the Nason HS Clear...

Even using NASON the materials quote was over $900

2 gallons base $455.40
2 gallons clear $212.90
1 gallon reducer $30.35
4 quarts slow activator $161.00
2 pints Ful-Thane Base Coat Catalyzer $65.54
total with tax $999.21

don't forget cleanup thinner, and perhaps a couple different activators depending on temp.

I'd run the Nason... keep in mind, 2 gallon's is a lot, especially the clear.. that should leave a couple qrts of each for future stuff..
