It took me almost 4 gallon of primer to get the feel of spraying it with confidence...I don't know how many batches that was, but I know I am better at it now than I was the first several...I am sure the base and clear is the same way...

by the way...I love the plastic cups from harbor freight...they are right at $1 each and you just toss them...no cleaning....no stuck sticky lid...and you can see through them. You get 6 to a pack for $5.99...then all you have to do is clean the gun itself.
 
my welder bud's candy paint job he just got was $4500 in materials... it was a $25 grand paint job tho...


if your not spraying daily in a perfect booth environment, it's not worth the risk with the high end finishes... I've done it out of the house for profit, but everything's gotta go perfect or you just wasted a LOT of money... :eek1: :doah:

your driveway, garage? nason, omni, etc is fine imo... may not get quite what you'd get yr-wise out of it that you'd get with a glasurit, premier, etc, but we'll all be dead anyway, who cares? :haha:

booth environment? yeah, the big dollar stuff is nice cuz it tends to be MUCH more user-friendly.. sanding, spraying, etc....

base is VERY similar to lacquer... VERY... it dries super quick, even unreduced, is pretty thin... super hard to run..... you can load the paint up pretty good...

the problem being, lacquer isn't dirt cheap any more... last time I bought a gallon of red, it was like $275, and that was like 6 yrs ago... now your not buying hardener tho.. but still even just a qrt of anything lacquer is gonna be $50 to 75... so it's not a great option for practice... i wouldn't worry about practicing with base, it's very easy... the clear is where it matters...

my old bosses 57 buick used to oxidize under a cover, in a garage.. it was red lacquer.... :haha:

time constraints can suck tho.... proper masking, prepping can be every bit of 4 hrs, etc.. but even with the lesser line, you want as many odds in your favor that you can get to achieve nice results.. that's the art of refinishing.. minimizing risks... a $300 material risk isn't nearly as frightening as $1000 one...
 
So how many coats of base...coats of clear are you shooting for?

Do you spray all of them "wet on wet"?

I know it has all the big tools...air compressors, filters, dryers...what I don't know is if they also have guns...

base totally varies depending on color and product quality... that color will cover easy peezy obviously... minimum of 3 or 4... but I usually like to get at least 5, of any color... dark blues, maroons, can be even more...

clear is generally called for in 2 or 3 coat apps, depending on product line... 3 is MY minimum....

BUT there many times you will clear as much as you have, or can lay on with good results.. it gives MUCH more to work with down the road for sanding and buffing.... I've done prostreet jobs with upwards of 10 coats of clear sanded and buffed to deep perfection.....


3, and it's perfect... walk away...

little dust and the odd fruitfly? make it 4 or 5 and give yourself a bit to work with...

oh... most flashtimes for clear are in the 10 to 20 minute range between coats... it'll get a bit longer with each coat.. first, maybe 10 minutes, next 15, etc... you'll check it by putting your finger into it on the masking paper.. if it's tacky, fingerprinting, it's beginning to dry and ready for it's next cost.. wet, slippery, slide wet? let it wait a bit... obviously temp, weather conditions and hardener/reducer speeds effect this....

base, pretty much you can go one after another.. but dry will be more of a matte finish... maybe, 5 to 10 minutes between coats.. as long as it's laying out good....

when you get done with base.. you'll let it dry for 1/2 hr to to an hr, while you get the clear ready and stuff.. you'll than tack off the base very lightly with a blue (base) tack rag prior to clear...
 
and if I can't get the booth, I guess it's the driveway....

Soooo...if you get the fruitfly what do you do...do you just stop and wait till it dries to sand it before adding more?

eh, you wont have anything in your base probably, it dries too fast..

fruitfly? tweezers.. every painter has to have a quality pair of tweezers... :deal: a steady hand helps too...

it would more than likely be in the clear... they seem to like the isocynates.. :haha:

I once had to do a full british racing green paintjob on a Jag in the dark due to a bizarre fruitfly invasion... :popcorn:

So...you pluck it out with tweezers and finish that coat....then what? finish all coats and then deal with the fly mess?
 
ya do a bit of "fill" spraying in the offended area on the next coat... scuff and buff any wing remnants when dry..
 
I'm pretty sure the finishline model is all running the same needle now... the older guns JGA, MBC's, #7's, etc where the ones that had many needle sizes... today you see more of it just in the nozzles..


the 1.5 would be nice for you for clearing..
 
No progress this weekend and not likely next week...I guess I will just go to work instead of staying taking vacation to work on the blazer.

It's been 104 - 107 here with almost 70% humidity which makes it feel like 110 -112.

I cannot work out in that...call me a wimp...all I would do is melt sweat all over it anyway and maybe have a heat stroke...

I came home yesterday, Friday evening at 5:00 to find that my home air conditioner was broken...it was 103 outside and 90 inside the house. :doah:
 
meh, that's the best time.. garden hose, some shorts, a sanding block and a sleeve of 400... go to town! :woot:

just like rainy days are perfect for getting wetsanding done.. :haha:

eh, I can certainly sympathize, spent the last 2 days getting baked in a hot bilge....

Last weekend we hit 101 but the air was real dry because of a cool winds aloft...it didn't feel any worse than 88....but when you get the high humidity ...it's like hot soup...
You guys are 76* right now at 10:30pm....we are still 92* right now...although I imagine a bilge is pretty hot...I might give it go if I can get under the tree enough...tomorrow is suppose to be the biggie of 107...

anyway...I'll drink to yer leg.....
