Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

It never leaked before, my guess it that they put a jack under it and it busted the seal loose

is it leaking from the cover gasket, or the pinion seal up at the shaft?

can't tell...the whole underside of the differential is wet it appears to be getting slung to the right side as there is still a drop hanging from the right "ridge" where it looks like the axle tube goes into the differential.

that's what I figured with it getting on the car behind you...

do you think it's the pinion seal?

How difficult is that to replace?

Anybody know why it would "blow out"?

How do I tell if I got 8.125 or 8 7/8 ring gear? They want to know for the proper seal.

Plus I quite a few nibs ...I am afraid to de-nib it...

Count the cover bolts. You should have a 12 bolt rear, 8.875". There is no 8.125" diff. 8.875" is the early diff, 8.5" is the later diff.

:smokin2:

dust in the paint? was it cut/buffed?

oh, and ummm, gotta look at the failure point..

I would guess the yoke is flinging it around maybe... check the floor above it too...

they usually wouldn't "blow out" unless you had a blocked vent or something... probably started a long time ago...

it was not cut and buffed oddly....they just look like clear "dust" particles..like a grain of salt almost. Hood on the other hand has some more serious "peel" or dimples going on....hood looks rushed

also...door seals are pushing my door sails outward...not sure if I can do anything about that? maybe when I get the vent windows installed they will firm up

I knew I should have left it in the paint shop....it looked so good in the photos and in my memory...:haha:

To be more specific, the K5 got one of three rear diff's and one of three front diffs in the entire production run.

Early years to ~ '81 could get the 8.875" 12 bolt rear.

From ~'78 or so the most common rear was the 8.5" 10 bolt with 28 spline shafts.

Starting in 89 the 8.5" 10 bolt came with 30 spline shafts.

Front diff's: 73-77 got the D44 (also 10 bolt cover and 28 spline shafts)

Roughly in 78 the D44 front was replaced with the 8.5" 10 bolt with 28 spline shafts.

In 89 the front 10 bolt also got 30 spline shafts.

The smaller 10 bolt was never installed under a K5, and the 9.5" diff (round cover 14 bolt semi-floater) was also never installed under the K5.

Any parts listing that says otherwise is incorrect. I hope that clears it up for you. Your '74 will have a 12 bolt rear and a D44 front as long as they are stock and original to the truck.
