Ryoken's HF press mod build...

I may leave the hand air control, think it may be more practical.... just figure out some hook/holder deal for it...

detour tomorrow to bandsaw wheels and hopefully the lathe ones too... gotta wire that motor up too...

interupting the press to get a couple other LAB™ things taken care of... mainly the lathe so I can turn a knob for the press...

but here where todays projects....

my bandsaw adjustable feet where hokey, and eventually started mangling the lower sheetmetal.... that washer deal is the welded, threaded nut it went thru.....

my solution.... no more hernia picking it up to move....

the other one today was one I alluded to earlier..... bit of a background confession... for as much as I'm a bodyworky prep, etc kind of nut, my air system has always sucked... basically a 50", 3/8" hose off a 1/4 turn valve at the Quincy's tank.. than i got a nice Bink's filter that I put there too... tho, right at the tank is doing very little... i would run a filter at the gun when painting with no issues thankfully... well, that Binks filter esploded one day..... fugger was LOUD! and I was back to just a straight hose off the tank again....

but more importantly, I was fed up with the air hose laying across the floor, coiled up under foot, etc.... just had no place for it, other than wrapping a big loop on the comp.. which was ok, but annoying when i need air...

so anyway, my cheap solution was to use the 50' hose to run up to the ceiling and round to the spot between my doors which is an ideal spot for my air to reside... also turned the mount into a brace for my overloaded hardware box...

a cheap HF filter and a new 25" flexilla hose (i've been anxious to try one out and review it. ) on a homebrew mount... i only need a 25' from this point in the LAB™... but i'm regretting not getting a 25' retractable reel for that spot now.. we'll see, maybe my birthday....

please keep in mind... if I owned this house, things would be drastically different......

here's tomorrows project.. pads/wheels and a new motor for the lathe...

than it'll be back to finishing up the press stuff and building the brake....

Inspiring I need to get my air system plumed in. Going to go up to @ 12', then across another 12" then down to chest height 90° into a water trap. From the trap into the preplumed garage walls.

this was the most down and dirty way to get slightly better system performance/functionality... you should see the air hose ziptied along the ceiling.. ;)

I'm in it for a $30 flexilla hose, that could be repurposed as an extension.. a $25 filter and $20 in fittings...... if I owned, I would have done a proper plumbed up/down/trap system a long time ago when I got the Quincy... but it is, what I is.....

this was the reel I was looking at, for any in the know. I have zero experience with hose reels... but I REALLY think it could be beneficial to me.. even coiling, and hanging, that flexilla will become "a chore"...

I want a 25', not 50'.... durability being paramount..... AND, most importantly, under $100 ;) :haha: i think the fact this one is 25' is what allows it to be relatively cheap.. it "appears" to be pretty stout... unlike a bunch of the plastic housing ones I see... I'm sure for $224 I could get something sweet...

I'm gonna need to mount it at an extreme angle toward that door on the left.. which is fine as that bay is where the work gets done... tho, a swivel would probably work... can't have it stick straight out off that wall, hard-mounted... I'll bust a knee... ;) don't want it on the ceiling... it's one of the reasons I added the second 2" x 6" under the first, to possibly mount one......

anyway.. stoked to get the lathe back up and running.. the new motor is beefy appearing... got a new pulley from Mcbible for it... prolly need to build a better mounting plate tomorrow... can't wait to get that stand on wheels... do a bit of shuffling around at The LAB™ for better efficiency...

I got the hf real.
I can't remember if it's a 25' or 50'.
It was below $100 on sale and works good

I like the curled hose like you have better. Mines the flexzilla also and I freaking love it.
The hose reals are a PITA in my opinion.
Stand there pulling against a spring for a minute to get the hose you want out, get it to click, then do what you have to do. Then get it to unclick, and hold it till it's back in so it does whip the chit out of your stuff while it's retracting.

A coiled hose on a good mount like you have you just walk over grab it and let it unfurl behind you. Rolling it back up is a few seconds, and done.
I have a NICE heavy duty hose real laying under my bench because I just don't like it.

One thing I noticed about the flexzilla that I'm not sure I fully understand yet.
I always just leave my regulator at 90. It's always stayed there too. I had a different stiffer hose for a long time and then it got a hole. Replaced it with my flexzilla and noticed my pressure creeped up to 100 when it sits :dunno: .
Not sure if it's an issue or not, but I did lower my reg so that it sits at 90 now again.
Not sure how or why it happened. All I did was unplug one hose and plug the new one in.

it definitely seems soft and flexible... wasn't sure if they've turned to chit recently with their huge popularity/sales coming... hope it holds up to my unregulated 2 stage.... it's full blast when I'm down there and the valve is opened...

I'll see, I'm in no rush to buy a reel.. just thinking of stuff people would actually buy for me as a present... :haha:

just going down now, was over my squarebody buds shootin pool... what a crazy shop that is.... his bud, that owns the place, daily's a 55 Chevy with a tri-power...

gonna have to tear The LAB™ apart..... :doah: the lathe V belt for the motor isn't "hanging on any obvious nails".. it's down there .. somewhere... :haha: motor and pulley are ready... and the casters are awesome...

hopefully back on the press/brake tomorrow...

Ryoken - trying to score a free Bridgeport.... and justifying he can find the room for it...

I also bought the manual real from harbor freight, it takes up to 50' of 3/8" hose.
But that works at low mounting location
The spring loaded one can hang from the ceiling

We have Goodyear and Dewalt reels in the old man's shop. Both work well. The Goodyear reel has the big hose on it for the 1" impact. It is a little touchy on rolling the hose up correctly, but not bad. The Dewalt reel with the regular hose doesn't seem to matter.

the Dewalts get good reviews......

so, the lathe is done for now till I come across the belt.. it'll turn up over the next few weeks as I clean, etc....

cleaned it up some, needs some more...

NOTE TO SELF - put a bedsheet over the damn thing! :doah: :grind:

added a cord wrap to the end too....

the motor is a 1 hp, 1800 rpm vs the old being 1/2 hp, 1750.....

getting back to the press... finished the day with an easy mod.. welded oversized washers to the cradle pins as stops....

I'm still waiting for the stoopid 3/16 cord i ordered for the winch... friggin eghey...

and I also need to do something about the knob too... but I'll putz with thopse things over the next few weeks..

tomorrow I start designing, and cutting up steel for the press brake...

Here is mine dug out and cleaned up . And my air hose holder is a old bungee hook bent 90* and crimped around the fitting . I just hang it on the top of the tower . My SWAG press brake kit on it and there plates .

they are mighty proud of their plates... ;) looked at their pricing last night.... :eek1: guess their steel costs have gone thru the roof too... they are sweet tho..

I have a few good heavy hunks that can do the vast majority of stuff I do... i think in a pinch if i need the arbor cutouts, i could put those 2 under the HF sploders for some added support...

quite nippley today.. trying to get The LAB™ warmed up..

The nice thing about SWAG products is that they are all USA made. He sources USA materials when available now. He is having a harder time getting USA materials now. 2 years ago, it was all 100% USA sourced.

oh yeah, please don't get me wrong.. not bagging on them whatsoever.... like it as a company.... and who knows, i may fail miserably here doing it on the cheap, and get his DIY kit anyway... :haha: :doah:

he!!, I was thinking about just getting upper fingers from him.. ya can buy em individually, think i could get a set for $80ish to a hundy iirc.....

but one of the things I'm actually finding difficult to source are the springs... the old press ones aren't compression springs... i actually struck out at mcbible.... just wanted a 3/4" ID, 6" comp spring... no dice..

so, got sidetracked again somewhat... but I did get probably the worst part over with for me on the brake build, whacking out this hunk of 3/8" leftover from the fab table build for the base...

anyone load steel blades in a circ saw? i run 5" thincuts on the 4.5 and it takes freakin forever... not overly impressed with these benchmark house brand ones...

my kingdom for a Hypertherm... my Parker would of made a mess of this....

anyway... the sidetrack.. since my line came in down at the P.O. thought I would play with that a bit....

the winch is ready to be reassembled and adjusted tomorrow morn....

so.. part of the issue with the winch is the need to split cabling off to each side as opposed to a single... i did see one guy do a single thing, but didn't like it... it's not a big deal attaching the 2 lines to the drum, it's the need to really put up a divider between the 2 sides.....

i did see one machinist dude do this whole insane, lathe a new divided center section and make it bigger diameter so each crank turn moves more line.. and that did make sense to me... but i'm going to try and achieve that by just loading each side full with line.. basically each side will have like 15, 20' of line, but only need adjustment from the 2 feet or so...

so here was my quickie solution to that issue.. Mutt's original hood to the rescue! :woot: :haha:

always love when I can break out dad's old drafting things on a project.....

some heavy wall tacking and out of the cabinet...

some etch

paint.

basically you tie a knot in the end of the line and feed each thru a hole in each side, works nice...

than they'll go down to carabiners on the cradle sides.. final adjustment will be the cable clamps down there on each side....

I have a DeWalt steel blade in my 7.25" circular saw. I've made a lot of cuts with it. Missing a couple teeth now, but it does great still. Next will be a diablo.

I definitely wear safeties and use a face shield with that thing though. The chips are vicious lol.
