Ryoken's HF press mod build...

just as a quick personal follow up, I seem to have lucked out and the shoulder seems to have improved vastly in the last day or so, it's feeling much better... :)

that said, tomorrow I start my dental nightmare.... :(

Always good to rest a day or 2 after going full on for a few days. Good timing with storm nice to sit back and let it roll through.

well, that 12 g hit at the dentist is gonna hurt the checking acct for a while.... :doah:

on a bright note... :) since my neighbor felt guilty over hurting me ;) , he just gave me a brand new drill doctor.. :eek1:

the newer 750 model.. think he got it for x-mas and never even took it out of the box.... so, that's what i'll be playing with coming up... sitting at the fab table sharpening dozens of drill bits...

oh, and i'll do a little review, etc on the tool and sharpening deal... i had contemplated buying one last yr and just never pulled the trigger... i just don't have the patience anymore to do em by hand...

for the last 10, 12 yrs, i would just pick up a new set of $19 to $24 dewalts, etc from the box store for work... so I've got 4 or 5 sets of em in a tool bag in various states of missing, broken, dull, etc...

whatever, I'll still prolly buy a set occasionally when I break the small stuff...... but I have a big tray of older big bits.. like 50 of em in the 3/8 to 3/4" range... I'd love to have the big stuff freshened up, 5/8, etc... some are really hammered and unusable...

I've got one, and it saved the day for me recently. had 2 1/2" drill bits. Broke one and the other was dull. Put it in there and let it work. Was able to finish the job.

cool... watched a few clips, seems simple enough.. set your depth, yada, split point, etc...

just the background here...

it was funnay how happy I was when he handed me that bag.. it made him laugh... mainly cuz this guy, always has all kinds of appreciation gifts for me for helping him out with mechanical stuff and kind of watching out for his missus. he works on the road for months on end without coming home.. he does underwater demolition/dredging stuff.. lately he's been up in boston.... it's stuff he gets from the jobsites he's on... sometimes he comes up with decent stuff for me, good pair of gloves or sumfin... but most of the time it's crazy stuff I have ZERO use for... last time it was 2 GIANT lifting hooks... seriously, you could lift an Abrahams.. they are like a foot tall each, and nearly 20 lbs a piece prolly...... and a big box of arc welding rods... "dude, i don't have an arc welder and i don't lift battleships... " :haha:

he's basically Kai's girlfriends grandpa. good dude...

just found another big container of some super cheapy china junk bits... iirc, i actually bent one of these... :haha: it's why i just found this bucket of em in the BACK of my box... hidden.. good for practicing tho..

on an aside... been learning that as much as i want to protect my new Sentinel hood, I can't just store it for weeks, or months on end in it's bag.. bat was just dead.. and i noticed it was way down last time i used it.. so i got it out sitting under a spotlight now..

so.. story time...

back when I was like 19, at my first autobody/resto job at Hunterdon Concrete... someone was throwing out this Durham, or maybe Hansen? metal box.. probably cuz it had no cubbies/dividers in it... well, I snagged it...

quickly filled with a hodge podge of stripped mopar hardware, etc.. it was a jumbled mess... but I lugged that thing around full of various bolts for the last 40 yrs... prolly why it's so banged up... finally I emptied it a couple yrs ago when I did my new bolt organizers.... been kicking aound empty ever since.. I have another that has all the cubbies that I use for electrical connectors...

new bit organizer.. just gonna make an alum divider like Mutt's drawers... I'll still use that other metal one for odd and smaller sizes... but this will get rid of the red tray and store a ton of 1/4" and up bits.. even left a long compartment for aviations..

burn it in probably tues.... quickie blast of the box, little satin black.. some Brother P-touch labeling...

so, my initial impression of the DD... i like it.. not perfect, but it seems to work ok... i'm not crazy about the 135/118 adjustment at the grind station.. it needed detents or something... ya really don't want to push forward, or downward pressure, when rotating.. seems like it moves a bit with pressure... ya just turn it, keeping contact up front.. gentle...

the only other thing is, the 180 seems pretty fine.. i get it... nice finish, etc.. but i have like 100 to do, many are in rough shape.. took me like a 1/2 hr to do one 5/8 bit yesterday... ordered the 100 grit wheel for it... figure I can hog all of em down to spec.. than reload em all with the 180 wheel for a final touch up...

need to look up and see if it can do lefthand.. doubtful...

I look at that DD as an occasional tool. I tend to buy small bits in bulk because I know I'm gonna break them, I just toss them when I'm tired of them. Big ones like 1/2 or 9/16 are expensive and worth sharpening.

if it'll do 1/4" on up consistently, I'm stoked..

I prolly have nearly 100 to do between 1/4", 5/16, 3/8 and 1/2"...

once they are all up to snuff, or tossed, than it'll start collecting the webs somewhat I guess... ;)

it'll do.... spool was acting a bit goofy, like I wasn't getting gas or sumfin.. tacked well enough for what it does...

these are basically my "shop" bits now..... I'll still use the dewalt kits for work, just dress those up too..

100 grit stone is supposed to be here thurs... so this may be my first "quite' project I get to after my incident this friday...

so.. had my dental trainwreck yesterday... doing surprisingly well, I think... #denturesbringthesuck

gonna try to refrain till later in the week, but "chompin at the bit" ;), pun intended, to get to some work..

I'm hoping later in the week to go pick up steel for Mutt's fuel tank project.... but I have one last shop project I decided to get to this winter before I get goin on that in the spring...

so years ago Greg hooked me up with some killa big caster wheels... for a couple yrs now, I've been looking to reconfigure my cart that the K5 sits on so I can drag it out into the driveway and open up the shop more as needed... problem is the rig sits 3" too tall to go out the door.. i had set it at hopeful ride height..

so hopefully next weekend I'm gonna get it out from under the K5 and hack it up for the mods to drop it down a bit and put the bigger wheels on..... than I can get that rig out in the driveway, wash it up a bit, etc...

guess i was right in my assessment... on the back of the 100 grit DD wheel....

"this grinding wheel enables faster sharpening of larger sized bits.. Recommended for bits 3/8" to 3/4" "

They do make a chuck to do left hand drill bits.

cool they thought of it... probably not worth the $30 or whatever they charge for the rarity that i use em... I have a good set of 5 Macs now.. of course one is missing, but the others are all fresh and sharp... usually that's the case with those, lost or broken... not dull.. was more just a curiosity...

just a bit of "can't sleep, bored," build babble.. got most cleared out around/under the K5.... poor girl, feel bad.... while it may not get worked on for a while here, I am gonna show it a bit of love/respect... got all the boxes off her, just need to get all the dudge interior out of the bed... that chits all going on marketplace this spring....

hard not getting all gacked up to work on it... so much fun interesting fab stuff on it... but it's a million miles away in the parts department that smacks me back to reality... and going to be farther possibly, when/if I pilfer the done 205 for Mutt.... but it's definitely my "bucket list, before I croak" build...

tomorrow I'm gonna jack it up and get the cart out.... I have a really good plan for lowering it, tho I definitely didn't have that in mind when i originally built it... quite a bit of cutting, welding, etc, but nothing hard... and no material needed.. you can see Greg's nice donation to the cause there....

when it warms up, I'll get it outside in the sun for the first time in a decade+ and give it good soapy bath.....

gonna work on the cart the rest of the week as best I can tho... dealing with the dental chit is definitely a nuisance... hard learning to talk/eat again.... but I'm a home hermit for the next 5 weeks, so I'm ok... ;)

also gonna try to sneak a Fazio run in at the end of the week, maybe early next, for Mutt's tank steel.........

Good to see the k5. Out in full view. Be great when she's all washed up.

I have that same Mac set, 1 missing and 1 broken extractor.
The 4 remaining are full as F.
Am on my 3rd set off left hand drill bits.

On the non rusty part of the world they do work more often than not.

Throw. A bunch of ugly beat up parts on the k5 and play with it for now. No need for it to be immaculate BEEF for the mean time. Cheap jy run will net you most of the parts you need. Wouldn't even worry about rebuilding the stuff.
Even a d44 up front is better than NO axle, etc. Lol.

Just an idea lol

nope... not worth the effort/money on that rig right now..... it's too custom for it, and it needs more than you think.... I wont be opposed to doing it a bit here and there once I get back on it and start trying to finish it.. but to run out now and get a pair of junkyard axles, springs, u-bolts, steering, etc just to make a roller isn't worth it... that money/time can go toward finishing Mutt, which is the priority..

got a bit in this afternoon.. got the K5 up on blocks.... hacked the front and back uprights off and got all the lower frame ground smooth where they attached...

this is the bottom.. apparently i ran out of paint last time and left it raw.. hit it with a DA super quick and rattlecanned it....

and for whatever reason, my smaller wheels had a bigger footprint than Greg's beasts... so I had to redrill the feet in closer.... than i also trimmed about an inch off each outer side real quick to help on not getting stabbed/grabbed/scraped by the feet...

tomorrow I'll cut down the uprights and start fitting them up... I'd like to be done with it tomorrow....
