Stemco was i believe the first to come out with a seal with its own sealing surface. They were called "Grit Guards".
I don't remember having to change a lot of them back in the day.
I've removed the AC box and ducts for cleaning and updates. I've learned that the best replacement for the factory rubberized sealing used between box sections is 3M Strip-Caulk. It's basically the same butyl tape stuff I've used in the past, but nicely packaged in 12" strips for this type of application. The only thing of note is that it can be a big pain to get off the wax paper separator sheets which are easily torn (worse than old beat up masking tape). Too bad they don't use separators like the old window tape kits.
Anyway, you don't want it too wam, or too cold. I found about room temp (70-80*F or so) seemed to work best. Also, use a utility knife to help separate the strands and deal with sticky paper. Also best to try to get reasonably recent product as the "stuck to the paper" problem seems to be more common with older packaging.
