Sara's hikey campy thread...

I don't hunt like you guys- not because I object, I just didn't grow up with it- but I dam sure spend as much time outside as I can... I'm a big believer in solo back county camping trips to ease my troubled soul. When the K5 is ready for it I'll take it out to remote spots but for now I'll share my outdoor adventure pics sans K5...

These are from a trip I took to Colorado Bend State Park over thanksgiving. I went by myself because I couldn't get back east with the fam and I was a little sad about it. Pretty country out there....

My parents have a 1500 acre cattle ranch in Bend Texas right on Cherokee creek and the Colorado river. Beautiful country for-sure.

Hiking? Did someone say hiking? I love hiking, camping, and the outdoors in general. Here's some pics of what my brother and I have been doing for the past 3 years or so to stay in shape for other adventures or in case a busload of North Koreans suddenly shows up. Since we both live in Colorado Springs we take advantage of Pikes Peak by hiking it once every month, up and down 22 or so miles, in one day. Yup, once a month no matter the weather, snow, or wind and in one day. No train or car rides from the top as many choose to do.

We've been successful at it for the last 3 years with me missing two climbs for a baby being born and being sick and him climbing another mountain in Alaska called Denali. It's a brutal 12 hr plus day but hey, what else would I be doing on one Saturday out of the month? If you slow down too much the reaper will catch you...

These are pics from our April '13 hike...if you look closely at the last photo you can see that we put the trail in on the East face for others to follow. I was coming down it in the last pic. We veered from the actual trail because the suck factor was high due to post-holing in the snow so we figured to get it over quicker by going straight up the gut. Beautiful day though...

^^^^ man, do I miss living in CO...

I lived in Broomfield for about a year and a half while my ex was I'm school. Hiked almost every day near golden and outside boulder. Used to wheel my jeep in national forest to a cherry spot by the dam off 34 (I think)... Those pics are like 10 dead laptops ago but I might have some hard copies to share.

I used to live in Lakewood and work in Golden. I'd hit all the local trails on my mt bike. There were at least 5 or so 15-20 from my apt. Lol! I DON'T miss having an apartment however...

Just found this thread. Great pics, thanks for sharing. I envy you folks out west w/ room for hiking. If I took an 8 mile hike, I'd end up in the slums of Camden.:doah:

I do have to take exception to your self perceived "pinupedness". The pic of you by the stream is sexy as hell. The shadow one, not so much. It looks like your packing some meat. :haha:

Cool, looking forward to the pics.

We are back.... It's a day earlier than I had hoped but my man got called in for emergency repair, and you gotta do what you gotta do.

We had a pretty sweet little adventure, though, and being that I normally fly solo on these trips, I found a HUGE difference in having a partner- for better and worse. I'd still roll with him in the end, though. If he has fear he doesn't show it, which makes him a valuable leader in the back country. His internal compass and clock and preparedness, however, are not as well developed as mine....

Anyway, I didn't take as many pics this time because I use my phone and it kept dying.

We started at Colorado Bend state park, to which I have been but he hasn't. Then ended in Sound Llano River state park, to which neither of is has been.

These are from our campsite. We arrived at like 1 am.

That day we went on a guided tour to Gorman Falls, which honestly was kind of a waste of time. But, par for course, we wandered way far from the group and found a cool cliff type thing. I saw an eagle fly across the river... We also saw a ton of snakes.

We then went "swimming". The river was low and it was.... HOT. frankly it was gross. Also I cut the sh*t out of my toe slipping on the sludge.

We then joined the rangers (and about 20 other people) for a night "bat emergence" hike. Apart from the large crowd hiking in, this was the highlight of the Colorado Bend visit. The rangers took us on an "unauthorized trail" down into some parts of the park I've never seen. We watched the bat emergence- AWESOME. I didn't take pics. It was discouraged and I never would have captured them anyway. Of course, several db dudes were flashing away. At one point I wanted to push one in the cave. Anyway. My man and I beat it out before the ranger roundup because the descent pace was unbearable - too many small children and weekends- and hiked ahead. It got dark and we couldn't find the unauthorized trail. I mean really really dark. So we just kept to the marked trail. I was able to get us back to the parking spot using my compass and trail map... But we probably popped out of the woods a good mile from original entry point. We walked the access road back, and yes, they knew were were missing, which surprised me because it was a large group and they didn't head count. But we passed a ranger on the road and heard him radio in that we were ok.

So. If anyone goes to Colorado Bend... Bat hike is strongly recommended.

Swimming in the river in August is not. :)

Looks like a fun time all in all. I know the feeling, sucks to be slowed down. I hate having to stop and wait, or drag ass for others. How'd you cut your toe, sandals or removed shoes to cross?
