Shorty the crewcab. (Been saved from the chopping block)

81 CC short bed conversion
I haven't had to fix a frame on one of my squares yet. Always heard about it. But never had a cracked one. Time to buy a brace too.

I’ve had a steering box rip right off the frame on a 78K10. Had to cut the frame and fish plate a new one on it, with plenty of added braces.

I must be blind, I dont see a crack?
I had an 80K10 that pulled the box through the weakened frame, being a plow truck for years probably did it no favors.

There it is....
hard to see with the crud on it.
definitely do the plates and braces!

Found a can of similar blue in my wife's craft stuff. So I decided to semi hide the giant rust spots. Lol. Kind of. 50/50 deal.
Looks semi decent from 50' at 50mph

Oh.... And frame is NOT cracked...that I can see anyway.

Pic was an optical illusion where the cross member and brace meet each other.

Different pic of the same spot.
Crack in the other pics is really a shadow.

So now I still have to figure out the odd wandering thing.

I noticed the rag joint is pretty soft. And was going to install my cherokee steering shaft. But I think I have the wrong one.

If I extend it long enough to fit it will only have about 1" of engagement on the slide.... So that isn't going to work lol.

I got into it to change the rag joint, and ended up doing the jeep shaft mod instead.

I gotta say after hearing so many people rave about it.... It was sort of a let down lol.

I can't tell even the slightest difference. :dunno:
Don't know what I expected to be different... But nothing is.

I think I have either a broken belt in a tire, or slightly bent wheel.
My faint wobble went away by rotating the tires from front to back and vice versa.

I would agree, I didn't find it to be that big of a deal.

The Cherokee steering shaft didn't make a single difference for me. It only does if your rag joint is truly worn out.

Mine was super soft and ripped with my fingers when I was trying to get it out. Still don't feel a difference lol.

May have some diagnosing to do.
The rest of the truck feels smooth when going down the road. Grab the TC stick and it's still shaking like hell. The corner of the hood does the same.

Shifter stick freely moves side to side a little, but it's not shaking ... :dunno:

I think it has something to do with wheels. I was having a slight steering wheel surge/float feeling, so I rotated the tires front to back. Steering float went away and this started lol. May have slightly bent a rim.

Well this thing got gmotm and then decided it didn't like me :doah:

All the rear lights stopped working again. And now I'm getting a decent grinding noise/vibration from up front. It happens at certain speeds mainly. So that's odd. And doesn't happen all the time either.
But it's enough that the idea of driving it 45 min away, to START wheeling, before the 45 min trip home, kind of bothers me.
So it sits :frown

I do believe I at least narrowed it to the pumpkin or driver's side.
I'm worried about it being in the pumpkin though. As it's getting REAL low a couple times because my pinion seal leak is worse than I thought.
After figuring that out I've been checking it after every 100-150 miles of driving.
Which is a pain in the azz.

At least the grinding I knew about before gmotm. And I could drive around town here and there.
Not with out lights though.
This time I'm taking the light ground to the frame.

Lights all fixed. Been driving it. Sound seems to have went away... :dunno:

But it just randomly decided it didn't want to idle.
It's fine for a while, then I'll push the clutch in at a stop and it'll die.
Getting it started takes a minute, and if I lightly hold the pedal it runs fine. Let off and it dies.
Only when warmed up though.
Temp gauge stays at 180-190.
I was thinking vapor lock maybe. But it's never done it before so......?
Thought maybe fuel filter. It could use changed anyway. But I'm stumped as to why it just all the sudden started doing it.
