Intresting discussion, Here is my 2Cents. if you already have a FI sbc then why not try and maximize it potential? you already have the makings for it?? The 6.2 as I have read was in place of the 305 in certain situations?? made to fit in the same space and provide the same mileage? Power wise they are close..
I wouldn't go cummins for a few reasons.. 4bt and 30mpg (unicorn)
weight, makes mpg worse.. why add 600 more lbs to reduce consumption??
Cost.. duh.
Ls1 similar mileage, heck even your tpi engine tuned should be really close on mpg if you tweaked the tune some??
Id turbocharge the sbc before I swapped anything.. what might be killing you is the fact you go so high the engine just plain looses it efficiency.. obviously turbos or any sort of FI bumps the VE of your engine.. turbos are nice because they are load based.. so lower rpm high load should net better torque and work the engine less than now where you might have to rev it more..
