So F***ing pissed rant. RUNNING WOO HOOOOO Q??

had a friend turn the engine over while I pushed down on the dizzy. The rotor was spinning, but wouldn't go down the needed 1/4". I had no oil pressure while cranking either, not that I'd have a lot, but figured I'd see a tiny bit. So it's definitely not touching. We cranked for about 7-8 seconds, then tried a second time. I tapped the dizzy up and down, side to side, and put pressure on it. Dunno. I double checked my dizzy part number, and it's right.

So I'm going to start attacking this differently. Need to take a step back and start kinda start over.

BTW: if I've primed it a million times (cause I get bored sometimes) but I haven't primed it for a couple weeks....can I start the truck as is, or should I prime it again just before startup?

I absolutly would not start it if your not positive the dizzy has engaged the pump shaft. I think the starter may spin the engine to fast to get it to engage the pump. Have your assistant turn the engine by hand while you take the dizy and just barely lift it and as its turned go up and down on the dizzy if it doesn't engage after a while I would pull the dizzy and check the end that's supposed to engage the pump shaft make sure is clear of any obstruction and maybe find a oil pump shaft and see if it fits correctly to the dizzy

it's official
intake manifold needs to come off again
it bolted down so easily and perfect, but it's too far to the driver's side it seems.
I had hoped it wasn't or that there was a way around taking it back off
the dizzy body doesn't go down because there is too much interference from the manifold

I hate this truck.

It is impossible for the manifold to be off to one side. :deal:

Well, I guess its not impossible, you might machine out the holes, and one side, and make it fit wrong, but otherwise if there is something in the way, its probably the gasket, or something fell in there while you were putting it together.

Sounds like your oil pump slot is not lining up... try using a long clean screw driver to help get the pump and dizzy close.

Patience...

and quit cranking the engine over to try to seat the pump slot, bump it a few times, small, really short bumps with the key. It'll drop...

agreed on both accounts, im free this comming Sun and Mon im willing to make the trip if you can toss me some gas, 8mpg on my truck is a wallet lightner

I finally had my cousin come down Monday (after saying he would 5 other times) and we tried. The oil pump rod is clear, cause I can get the primer on it. Both the priming tool and dizzy sit to one side of the hole. (passenger side and back). We bumped it ~15 times, ran it for a few seconds, we tried tapping on the outer edge to get it to drop, we tried a lot of things. :dunno:
With the distributor in and gasket in place, the gasket does not cover the entire hole.

I had trouble getting my dizzy to set once. I got all frustrated & started thinking I got the wrong part too. After taking a much needed break, I came back with a fresh set of eyes & realized the hold down clip was wedged under the hold down lip. It was so simple, I tried to leave it in place because it was hard to get my fingers in there after it was installed but it just got in the way & I didn't even notice. I removed the hold down bolt completely then the dizzy dropped right in.

What do you mean by "the oil pump rod is clear"? You can still get the primer on it even if it won't lone up with the distributor. And the rod can move around a little.

The slot in the rod and the end of the distributor have to line up correctly. Look down in the hole in the intake manifold with a flashlight and see where the slot in the end of the rod is...then look at the bottom of the distributor and see how the end of it is aligned. Those two have to line up...if they will not, use a long screw driver like someone else said before.

Let me ask this, is the manifold or distributor either brand new or new to you?

Did you buy the distributor new yourself? If so what is the part number of it?

That sucks, but seems to be pretty common for me too.

You will get a better hang of it as time goes by, then the crazy mods start.

bought it from summit

When I started having this problem, I double checked the part numbers and came back right. 78/79 400sb
part # 8365

I was getting ready to go there, suspecting the wrong dizzy here.
I'm suspecting wrong manifold. I think he said its new to the engine.
Or maybe just a misbuilt manifold.

Do you have the old distributer, if it had one?
