So I found this at a wrecking yard

i have seen them om the firewall-drivers side 1/2 way down, drivers frame rail on the side below the drivers feet area.

you have to get a salvage title from the dmv.when i bought my blazer,it came with a salvage title from previous owner from san francisco.i dont know whats involved though.good luck with reattach the vin.that would be anether call to the chp and dmv i think.good luck

I went through a similar deal and I had to call the state vehicle inspector. He looked at it, looked at the paperwork, Made a new VIN plate and issued me a clouded title and went to a full title in three years. Wasnt too bad of a deal.

I saw the correct type of rivets for sale online one time. they were expensive though, and I think they were for the full on factory spec resto guys.

In my research and in doing it, CA actually isn't all that bad AZ was worse for a out of state vehicle but really easy if you built one, UT the same way.

I would get it inspected by CHP tell them what it is what you found and go from there. Not sure how you would be liable for fees on a vehicle that hasn't been driven or on the road in years that you just bought.

You could just weld the tab back on and say that is how you got it as long as its not stolen you should be OK.

Ive seen those advertised too. I have a hunch they are for ppl that commit VIN crimes though, not for restorers......

im going to eventually do a cab swap on my truck... I talked to the guy last time my truck was inspected and asked him what was involved...

I have to email trenton... get paperwork... fill it out.... mail it back... wait for more... and fill out and mail back....

then get inspected...

now i dont know why you have to do all that to do body swaps... I never did but that was back in the day and i want to rectify that..

also im hearing even a motor swap requires this.....

so 78 frame, 79 axle, 82 cab, 86 front clip... 91 motor.... I need 5 x paperwork and all ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Screw that! I understand changing vins but changing bodies over should not involve all that paperwork. Honestly unless the vin's screwed up I don't see it as being a big deal just swapping cabs from one to another even if the frame's different. If that were true there'd be alot of people doing alot of paperwork all over the U.S

I've never seen a tag anywhere on the body or frame in plain sight and don't see a cop going through all that much trouble to prove it may or may not be stolen. This is also why I keep the title to the rigs I've took to the scrap yard or when someone doesn't ask for the title when I sell something.

I sold a 77 blazer a few years ago to a guy. Forgot to give the guy my title. Figurd he'd come back someday but he didn't. Different guy shows up and asks if I know where to find a blazer body in halfway decent shape. I tell him the story of the first guy buying the blazer. Told him if he could find the blazer i'd give him the title. He did so I gave it to him.

:eek1::eek1::eek1::eek1::eek1::eek1::eek1:

Called DMV to get it registered and it dosent exist in their system. It would show up in their system if it had been scrapped, or was stolen. DMV said it just "fell off" because of it's age and not having been registered for 4-5 years in row. DMV says I'll have to bring in a bill of sale and give the address of where it had been sitting for the past few years. Then apply for new pink slip, pay the registration fee and I'm good to go. Not too shaby.

BAD F**KING ASS! See I told ya it would be worth it to atleast check into it. Your welcome :D GOOD FOR YOU!!

The only problem now is that YOU WILL need a VIN verification which means taking it to DMV or having a cop come out to where the vehicle is and do it (hopefully DMV or the cop doesn't say anything about the VIN plate ever being removed).

Just get it pop rivited back on and it's done. He's going about it legal, can just explain the situation of the condition it was found it. Or lie like hell to make it work. Any way you can brother. :D

Well hopefully his DMV doesn't know what the factory rivets look like, that's all i have to say. Ask me how i know.

The rivets will only become an issue with a cop if something else smells funny. If you have an officer do a VIN check for you, they will usually look at your paperwork, check the VIN plate on the dash, make sure it matches the paperwork and perhaps the door VIN or the firewall VIN, and sign off on it and not worry that much about the rivets. Most times an officer will call in the VIN and see how it returns from dispatch to check for a match with everything they see. However, if something seems awry, they could take the time to find another VIN on the vehicle to see if it matches the dash VIN plate. As 4x4High said, there are other places to look. The DMV and the police know that sometimes VIN plates are removed for legitimate reasons and then put back on. If the VIN plate is the original one and everything matches, usually the DMV and the police won't sweat the rivets. Don't ask me how I know.

It wasn't that big of a deal. He found the original blazer and I gave him the title to said blazer. Although it wasn't dated he could still use the body for w/e use he wanted it as. I saw the blazer and I DO know it was the same one.

I could understand if he just said it was the one and I took his word for it. Sorry if I mislead in any way. :doah:Even drinkin a few I realize what I may have said or how you misinterpreted

I would sugest you look up the VIN on the tag you found to see if it matches the K5 at all.

lmctruck dot com has a vin decoder.

Unless the DMV described it after you gave the vin. Id just hate to see you try to use it and it end up being for a completely differnt vehicle.

I asked DMV that day about it having to be verified and they said no. They said that as long as it dosent throw up any red flags (which it didn't) then all I have to do is paper work with no inspection. The dude was pretty cool. He said beleive it or not but the reason DMV allows vehicles to "fall off" the record is because if they didnt there would never be enough data bases to keep every single vehicle listed. Stolen vehicles never "fall off". I'm GOLDEN..... well I will be if all goes like I was told and get it registered :deal:
