Staying in GJ after billings canyon?

I have heard a couple of mentions of staying at the fair grounds. Is there a camp ground there or just parking in the parking lot or something? Is there a fee for parking there? I just need a place to park and sleep for the night and the fair grounds sounds like it might be a little quieter than the Wallmart parking lot.

Brent

No camp ground really, I have only been to horse shows there that people were camped out at. If I was going there I would just park in a quiet corner and see what happened.

But that's just me.

We ran Billings for the Rock Junction trip in June and with a 8am meet in town we were done and back early in the afternoon, I think around 2-3pm? Group was 10-12 rigs, mostly smaller jeeps but all moved along pretty good and just had fun, nothing major happened.

There is a large parking area on the top of the hill at the Bangs area trailhead where we can leave trailers and it's all dirt or slow asphalt from there.

With a 9am meet up near the interstate, we need to be ready to leave at 9am and ready to get in the rigs and roll from the parking lot when we unload. It's easy for me to spend a while transferring from tow rig to trail rig so I'll have to work on this one a little ahead of time.

Be prepared for some suck-y-ness for the tow rigs on the road up there. It's a steep hill and twisty enough it seems like I'm always between gears.

It will likely be HOT there, be prepared for that and make sure you have some bug spray, the gnats can be bad up there. Pants and long sleeves are not a terrible idea. I have no idea how they'll be this late in the year, I've only been on the trail in June.

I took our UA truck through on my last trip and had to work a little to keep it straight and thought a couple times that it was nice to not have to worry about tail lights. Pretty much everyone will use the winch so be ready for that. All in all a good fun trail.

I'm hesitant to change the main meeting place but if the guys that are staying on the south side of town (KOA, etc) want to meet at a secondary location that's fine with me. We can pull through the albertson's at Monument and CO340 and meet extra people there without everyone having to drive across town twice.

I'd be up to meet somewhere closer to the KOA / closer to trailhead since I'm staying there. We have trailers so will have that extra time to park and unload but I can do that pretty quick with my setup.

You won't be the only one with trailers to deal with but if you want to be ahead of the game you could just go up to the parking lot at the top of the hill on little park road and unload. Then you could heckle the rest of us while we work. That sounds awesome for you. Not so much for us.
If you want to meet in town an easy spot is the albertson's on 340 across from where you turn off onto monument. You can run right down riverside parkway and hook right in there from the KOA. I'll probably just leave from my house early in the morning and bring the group down from horizon drive.

We are staying at the KOA also. So I think meeting at the trail-head would be good for me. Since its the first trail day, getting the kids rolling might be a little slower. Although Sage is counting the days so I will probably be woken up with him staring nose to nose with me ready to go.

Hey Scott:

Is the Bang Canyon Group still on for 9:00 am at the North Side Quality Inn? We should be arriving in Grand Junction on Tuesday evening and will be staying in town with a friend Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Yep

We're not leaving here until the boys are out of school so it's going to be pushing 10PM by the time we get there Wednesday night.

I think we are going to roll out to trailhead in morning instead of going back and forth across town.

With the group meeting at 9 clear up on horizon and I70, it's very possible you'll be waiting till 10:00 for us at the trailhead. I'm still planning to be at the albertsons for a little while, then roll up to the trail head. Chris Holick is going to bring the group down from the meeting spot on horizon drive. My cell is 970-379-8790 if anyone needs it. We should have pretty good service all over the area.

Where is everyone? We are eating lunch on pay 11 currently.
