Story of two '72 K5's build

And welcome to page 4 ladies and gents, Page number 4.

Well for those of you with the same 100post per page settings as I have.

This better not get to Page 5......

That will mean that there is entirely too much "modding" and not enough "enjoying" going on. :deal:

:usaflag:

FWIW my exhaust exits out the sides and with crap seals all around, even the driver gets a dose of those wonderful exhaust fumes.

Mine is side exit right now and its great, zero issues. So i will probably jsut stick with that i guess.

I had tons of fumes with mine when i had mine straight out the back. It was ok with the top off and not too bad with the top on as long as the windows were all closed. Anything between those two was pretty miserable. I drove it to work a few times as was sick to my stomach from the fumes. So i redid it with a single outlet.

I had them point mine down at the street right near the back bumper and behind the rear tire. No more fumes unless you are standing back there while the motor is running. :)

Spent about 450 bucks today:eek:

Autozone lists drag and tie rod links as all tie rod ends.
Napa lists them all as drag links
Oriely's are the only ones who seperate by calling the draglinks "inner" tie rod ends and the Tie rod ends as "Outer's"

Anyway...Moog drag and tie rod ends
Front disks
Front calipers
Front pads
And my two 1/4-5/16 conversion bits for the rear brakes

About 450 bucks...will get 40 back when i take the old calipers but man...seemingly small repairs sure add up and hit the wallet.

If i am going to spend that much money i suppose i should put a picture up or something. Getting a 4-5 day weekend, so i will probably chip away at the truck in the mornings before the heat shows up.

Ah, the distinctive aroma of cardboard and a slightly oily machine shop "new parts" smell....

Might as well spray some Brakeleen on those parts to remove the oils...shoot a mist coat of zinc, the hit them with some kind of black paint so that they don't all end up rusty and ugly in less than a month.

Holiday weekends = big progress!!

Tech question first. The shocks that i have for the front are roughly 10" of travel. Bilstein specs are 15.91" collapsed and 25.93" extended. They are advertised for 6" lift. Even though i have 4" i just wanted a bit more travel.

Here they are installed, a quick tapemeasure eyeball looks like only 4 1/2" of uptravel. Will this be enough to absorb daily driving condtions? Hoping that i do not have to go down in size to the 8" travel shocks.

The boot is pulled down to show how much i have, if i run these shocks i will probably take it off altogether.

Now...update? Well i work slow, intentionaly. Its very enjoyable working on this when there is no rush at all. plus i really only go for about an hour in the morning then call it a day once the heat shows up. Spent alot of time cleaning, and cleaning and cleaning, then priming and painting. really taking my sweet time.

-Replaced rotors
-replaced one of the bearings and the seal in the pass. side hub.
-All other bearings looked good as are the warn hubs on there.
-drop pitman arm
-drag link ends...
-waiting to get a tap large enough for the tie rod threads, just to clean them up real nice before installing the tie rod.

Here is where we stand. nothing sexy, but its been slow in the 1st gen forum so some pics are better than no pics.

Looking good man! Now that I'm not trying to "finish" mine I've been taking more time as well (both due to a slight lack of interest and much less to get done...). It certainly is more enjoyable that way. They really are great to drive, so it's good when that's an option too. Keep it up!

SuperD,

I think those shocks are going to be perfect. 4.5" of up travel is pretty nice and I think your leafs may not support more than that anyway...flexing will be the only way to confirm if you are "shock limited" or "leaf limited".... Then match a bumpstop to whatever you discover is your limiting factor.

The brake lines appear to be too short to support the droop you are going to get. Usually and extended brake line is long enough that it sort of flops around in that space, and yours look pretty much maxed at ride height. Might need to check that before wheeling hard.

Looks good! I'm getting ready to spend all day in the shop today, so don't expect to see me online here for the rest of the day! :waytogo:

:usaflag:

Thanks good to know.

The brake line is not connected, it is just hanging free and thus looks tight.

Looks good Dave, keep it up. And yes, we all love 1st Gen pics no matter what there of. :waytogo:

So...Got the front all wraped up minus the u-bolts that i am still waiting on from ORD. (I hate the fit of the skinny autoparts u-bolts) Did a tapemeasure/eyeball alignment for now.

Figured out the rear brake lines, used the 1/4-5/16th adapters from oriely's. Also...while digging around for a shock bolt i found some inline-tube rear hardlines that i had forgot i bought over a year ago -SCORE! So went and replaced the old rusty ones. Going to figure out a little tab to mount the soft line block to the Diff. PO must have ate the factory one.

Changed the pads and wheel cylinders and found a Black widow living in my Drum:doah:

All that is left is U-bolts front and rear, U-joints for the driveshafts front and rear, shakedown run, then its off to the exhuast shop and an alignment.

Wow Dave, I just read the whole thread.:waytogo:
I really like that Blazer.
Nice work.
It looks like a future GM of the month.

is X-over happening sometime soon? Raised steering arm? Your current draglink angle looks somewhat terrible. :doah:

Does it? I may add a raised arm then...I have the drop pitman arm on there now and the springs are only 4" springs.

Is there an acceptable degree that the angle can be around?

-edit-

Just got home and checked it. I think it is just the way that the picture was taken. There is not much of an angle at all when you look at it in person.
