Swettysblazer's 1991 K5 Trazer: ONE TONS!

So I'm bumping this up again because I ran into an issue in the past week...

The truck sat for about a month while I was at school because I got a little Ford Ranger to drive up here. Well, my dads car bit the dust so the Blazer was pressed back into action. Changed the oil, did routine maintenance stuff and everything was fine. On the way back to school, I smelled some burning oil. So I pulled into a rest stop and got under the truck, and there is oil leaking onto the passenger side header collector :dunno:

I can't figure out where its coming from. The truck has had an oil leak since I've owned it, but not this severe. Any pointers to find out where to start? I'm thinking either the dipstick tube or the valve covers....

If its valve covers it will only leak when its running and untill whats left in the heads leaks after shutdown for a short period, so could be that. Wipe down the side of the block its leaking from and run it an watch for streaks of oil

Alright Adam, I'll definitely do that. Its got the stock valve covers on it, and idk if they have ever been off, so the gasket might be bad? IDK

When I put the motor in mine leaked like crazy, that's how I figured it out, thought it was the oil pan at first. If you replace gaskets get the felpro blue ones with steel inserts. They are like $50 but I'll tell you and many more will say they are the bomb.

yeah, im gonna try and find somewhere up here where i can try and clean up the engine a little bit and go from there....

Ok, so I checked what Adam said and some other guys, and I still cant find this friggin leak. Is it possible that the rear main seal could be leaking? Theres oil on the tranny pan, and a little bit on the bell housing too...

Doesnt necessarily mean thats where its from, but a very good possibility. It is a 20 year old engine....

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I that's what it is its gonna have to stay like thaat for a while. Its just getting annoying.

It's not leaking, it's marking it's territory...

Dripping onto the passenger collector isn't a rear main seal. It's either the VC gaskets or the rear of the intake. Don't feel offended if you already did VC gaskets. SBC 4 bolt VC's suck in general and they are tricky to get leak free. I'm not much on bling, but I chucked the tin stuff in favor of some old cast aluminum VC's, just because the cast aluminum is machined flat and is very rigid. Even then, you need good gaskets and a method. I prefer to use RTV to glue the gasket to the VC, let it set up and install. No RTV or other adhesive between the cast iron and the gasket.

The gaskets are a bit wider than the lip of the VC, if you don't glue the gasket to the VC the oil gets slung up on top of the gasket and slowly seeps out between the gasket and the VC. Having them glued to the VC helps re-use even the cheap gaskets if you need to remove a VC for any reason.

Rear main you'll have a steady amount of oil coming out the dust cover under the convertor when it's running.

I haven't done the valve over gaskets yet. When I do do them and it will be soon should I get new valve covers too? Ill look for some aluminum ones like you said.

Just realized you have a '91 which should be centerbolt style. You should be fine with new gaskets only. The centerbolt style clamp a lot more evenly. I'd still glue the gasket to the VC first though.

You have seen my covers. They are chrome and thin and everyone said they were crap. Get the felpro blue gaskets with the steel inserts, they go on DRY and I put them on started it and not a drop. Everyone that's used them can prolly vouche fr them. $50 is steep for gaskets but try work great. I havnt tightened ten once since putting them on and still no leaks. Summit has them. Aluminum covers are better but with these gaskets I bet any cover would work.

I think so... I'm gonna look because I'm honestly not too sure. Rene said they are, so I am going with him but im gonna verify before hand.

hmm never knew that, guess I should buy some newer vehicles, my vans is but thats 93. Oh well on with the "Quest Of Defeating The Leak"

It sucks not having anyone up here to help me work on my junk. I've gotta try and fix my steering too, and the girls don't seem too interested in helping me out or getting there hands dirty
